Scott dropped off and picked up the camper van right at Mohegan Sun’s (free) RV lot, where we stayed for two nights. This was super convenient for us! And was only a 5-8 minute walk to the casino. The camper van was clean, well-equipped (kitchen supplies and bedding/towels were provided, camp chairs too!) and had enough room for two people for our short stay. Scott was communicative and very helpful from start to finish! He accommodated my drop off and pickup time constraints. We would definitely book this camper van again next time we visit Mohegan Sun

Do I need a special license to rent an RV in Portland, CT?

Good news: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Portland, CT for the vast majority of motorhomes, campervans, and travel trailers on RVezy. Connecticut General Statutes specifically exempt recreational vehicles in private use from commercial driver's license (CDL) requirements, so even larger Class A motorhomes are covered by your standard Class D license. When is the best time for an RV trip in Portland, CT?

The sweet spot for RV camping Portland CT is mid-May through mid-October, when daytime temperatures range from the comfortable 60s in spring and fall to the warm 80s in July and August. Late September into mid-October is genuinely magical here, with the Connecticut River Valley exploding into fiery red, orange, and gold foliage that draws leaf peepers from across the country. Summer is the busiest season, while May, June, and September offer cooler nights and fewer crowds. Winter rentals do exist for hardy adventurers but most Connecticut state park campgrounds close after Columbus Day. Pro tip: time your trip for the first two weeks of October for peak fall color along the river.

I've never driven an RV. Will I be okay renting in Portland, CT?

You've got this. First time renting an RV in Portland, CT is easier than most people expect because every host on RVezy provides a hands-on orientation at pickup, walking you through driving, the generator, water, propane, slide-outs, and dumping. You can also message hosts before booking with any questions, and 24/7 roadside assistance has your back if anything feels off on the road. Portland itself is a great starting point because the surrounding roads are wide and rural rather than congested. Pro tip: pick a Class C motorhome or campervan rental Portland CT for your first trip. They drive much more like a large van than a bus and are a confidence booster on Routes 17 and 66.

Cross-border travel to Canada is allowed on many RVezy rentals, but you must confirm with your host before booking and bring a valid passport plus the RV's registration and authorization letter. What's a realistic fuel budget for my Portland, CT RV trip?

Fuel is usually the biggest variable cost on a Connecticut RV trip, but it's easy to plan for. Class B campervans typically get 18 to 22 MPG, Class C motorhomes average 8 to 12 MPG, and Class A motorhomes get 6 to 10 MPG. Travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle but add roughly 30 percent to its normal consumption. Gas prices in Connecticut typically run a bit higher than the national average, often $3.30 to $3.90 per gallon, so budget accordingly. Pro tip: fill up just over the Massachusetts line where prices are sometimes lower, and use the Pilot/Flying J in Willington (about 30 minutes northeast of Portland) for diesel pull-through lanes.

How far in advance should I book campgrounds near Portland, CT?

Book early to lock in the best spots. Connecticut State Park campgrounds, including popular Hammonasset Beach and Devil's Hopyard, open reservations 11 months in advance through the official ReserveAmerica portal, and waterfront summer weekends sell out fast (especially July 4th and Labor Day). For private campgrounds like Wolf's Den or Markham Meadows near Portland, aim for 2 to 4 months ahead for summer weekends and 2 to 3 weeks for shoulder season. Midweek availability is usually wide open even in peak season. Pro tip: if you find a sold-out state park weekend, set up alerts through cancellation-monitoring tools, Connecticut sites get cancellations regularly within a few weeks of arrival.

What are driving conditions like around Portland, CT?

Driving an RV around Portland, CT is refreshingly relaxed compared to bigger metros. Route 17, Route 66, and Route 9 are the main arteries, all RV-friendly with reasonable shoulders and grades. Heads up: Connecticut's scenic parkways (Merritt and Wilbur Cross) ban commercial vehicles and most RVs due to low bridges, some under 11 feet, so always stick to interstates like I-91 and I-84 and state routes. Winter brings snow and ice from December through March, so most renters stick to April through November. Pro tip: avoid I-84 through Hartford during weekday rush hours (7 to 9 AM and 4 to 6 PM), and use the Arrigoni Bridge between Portland and Middletown for a smooth river crossing.

Private parks like Markham Meadows and Wolf's Den typically offer 30/50-amp electric, water, sewer hookups, hot showers, laundry, Wi-Fi, pools, and on-site dump stations. Connecticut State Park campgrounds (like Devil's Hopyard) usually offer water spigots, flush toilets, and a central dump station, but most are no-hookup sites, so you'll rely on your RV's tanks. Pro tip: top off fresh water and dump tanks before leaving for state park sites. The closest reliable dump station to Portland is at Markham Meadows in East Hampton, about 10 minutes east.

How does payment and the security deposit work for a Portland, CT RV rental?

Payment is straightforward and fully handled through RVezy's secure platform, so you never exchange cash or wire money to the host directly. You'll pay the rental total at booking (plus the protection plan you choose), and a refundable security deposit is held separately before pickup.
