Very simple to book, reserve, communicate, meet-up, operate, return, etc. I would recommend to all! Perfect size RV and amenities for what I was looking for. Family of five. We had everything we needed, with nothing too fancy that may be difficult to operate or take away from the camping experience.

Wonderful across the board. The RV was clean, drove perfectly (mountains of Colorado and New Mexico), and was impeccably organized. They have clearly thought through all the things that might be needed on a long trip and made them easily accessible. The toilet cassette was easy to empty (particularly in a latrine -- 3-5 minutes with no mess). The refrigerator and cabinets have plenty of space and beds were comfortable. It was easy to stop and sleep overnight in parks. We were really pleased and would happily rent this RV again.

Frequently asked questions about renting an RV in Wilmette, IL

How much does it cost to rent an RV in Wilmette, IL?

Great news, RV rental in Wilmette is one of the more affordable ways to explore the North Shore and beyond. On RVezy, you can find travel trailers starting around $90 to $150 per night, campervans and Class B motorhomes from roughly $150 to $250 per night, and larger Class A or Class C motorhomes from about $200 to $350 per night. Summer weekends and Chicago festival dates (think Lollapalooza in late July or Air and Water Show in August) book up fastest, so reserving 6 to 8 weeks ahead locks in better prices. Pro tip: shoulder months like late April, May, and September often shave 15 to 25 percent off peak rates while the weather along Lake Michigan is still beautiful.

Do I need a special license to rent an RV in Wilmette?

Good news for first-timers: for nearly every RV on RVezy in Wilmette, your regular Class D Illinois driver's license (or your equivalent home-state or international license) is all you need. Federal law and the Illinois Secretary of State specifically exempt recreational vehicles used for personal travel from Commercial Driver's License (CDL) requirements. The vast majority of campervans, travel trailers, and Class C motorhomes you'll find on the platform fall under the 16,000 lb Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) threshold that keeps you firmly in standard-license territory. You will need to be 25 or older to book, and RVezy verifies your ID right through the platform. Visiting from abroad? Bring your home license plus an International Driving Permit and you're set.

What protection and roadside assistance comes with my Wilmette RV rental?

You're covered from the moment you hit the road. Every RVezy booking in Wilmette automatically includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so a flat tire on the Edens Expressway or a dead battery at Illinois Beach State Park is just a phone call away from being handled. RVezy offers multiple protection tiers (Basic, Standard, and Premium) covering physical damage to the RV, with different deductibles and coverage limits to fit your trip. Roadside assistance handles tire changes, jump starts, lockouts, fuel delivery, and towing. Pro tip: review the protection tiers carefully at checkout, especially for longer Midwest road trips where extra coverage gives more peace of mind.

What happens if I need to cancel my Wilmette RV trip?

Booking is genuinely low-risk. RVezy sets the cancellation policy for every trip (not individual hosts), and it includes a grace period after booking where you can cancel for a full refund, giving you time to firm up plans. After the grace period, refund amounts depend on how far out you cancel from your trip start date. RVezy also has provisions for major disruptions, which matters in the Chicago area where a sudden blizzard or summer storm can change plans. The full cancellation policy details are available in your booking confirmation and on the RVezy Help Center, and RVezy's support team is available before, during, and after your trip if anything comes up.

Can I bring my dog on a Wilmette RV rental?

Absolutely, Wilmette is a wonderfully dog-friendly launching pad. Many hosts on RVezy offer pet-friendly RV rentals in Wilmette, and you can filter listings by the Pet-Friendly tag to see them instantly. Once you're on the road, your pup will love Gillson Park's leashed dog beach right on Lake Michigan (Wilmette residents and guests with day passes), the off-leash Centennial Dog Park, and the North Branch Trail just minutes west. For overnight stays, Illinois Beach State Park, Chain O' Lakes State Park, and Chicago Northwest KOA in Union all welcome leashed pets. Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm any pet fees or breed considerations, most are very accommodating.

Can the RV be delivered to my home or campground in Wilmette?

Yes, RV delivery in Wilmette is one of the easiest ways to start your trip, especially if you're nervous about driving a big rig through North Shore traffic or out of a Chicago neighborhood. Many Wilmette-area hosts will deliver the RV straight to your driveway, a nearby campground like Illinois Beach State Park or Chain O' Lakes State Park, or even a tailgate spot, then set up the hookups and walk you through every system. Delivery fees are usually based on mileage and are listed right on the host's listing page. Pro tip: delivery is gold for first-time renters because the host handles the trickiest part (parking and leveling), so you can just enjoy the trip.

How far can I drive on a typical Wilmette RV rental?

You've got serious range from Wilmette. Most hosts include a daily mileage allowance (commonly 100 to 150 miles per day) with additional miles available for a small per-mile fee, and some hosts even offer RV rental with unlimited mileage for longer trips. From Wilmette you're roughly 50 miles from Indiana Dunes National Park, 90 miles from Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, 175 miles from Starved Rock State Park, about 250 miles from the Wisconsin Dells, and around 350 miles from Mackinaw City, Michigan. Pro tip: if you're planning a longer RV road trip from Wilmette, message the host before booking and ask about a custom mileage package, many will happily build one for a multi-state itinerary.

Where are the best campgrounds near Wilmette for an RV trip?

You're spoiled for choice within a short drive. Top picks include Illinois Beach State Park in Zion (about 35 miles north, right on Lake Michigan with electric hookups and dune trails), Chain O' Lakes State Park near Spring Grove (about 50 miles northwest with full hookup sites and 15 connected lakes), Camp Bullfrog Lake in Willow Springs (a Cook County Forest Preserve campground roughly 30 miles southwest, open year-round), Chicago Northwest KOA Holiday in Union (about 55 miles west with full hookups, a pool, and pet-friendly sites), and Camp Reinberg in Palatine (around 25 miles west, great for quick weekend escapes). Pro tip: Illinois state park sites can be reserved up to six months out through ExploreMoreIL, and summer weekends fill fast.

When is the best time of year for an RV trip from Wilmette?

Late May through early October is the sweet spot, with June through August being peak season for Lake Michigan beaches and Chicago-area festivals. Wilmette summers run warm and humid with highs in the upper 70s to mid-80s Fahrenheit, while September and early October bring crisp, sunny days in the 60s and 70s plus brilliant fall color along the lakeshore and through Starved Rock. Spring (April to mid-May) is quieter and cheaper but can be rainy. Winters are cold and snowy, with January averages in the low 20s, and many campgrounds close from November through April. Pro tip: late September is the local insider's favorite, kids are back in school, mosquitoes are gone, and campgrounds open up.

I've never rented an RV before. Will I get help figuring it out?

You'll be in great hands for your first time renting an RV. Every RVezy host does an in-person orientation at pickup or delivery, walking you through the slide-outs, water hookups, propane, generator, dump procedure, and any quirks of their specific rig, usually 30 to 60 minutes. You'll leave with their cell number and can text them anytime during your trip with questions. Many Wilmette hosts also offer delivery and setup at your campground, which means you skip the trickiest first-time hurdle entirely. Plus, 24/7 RVezy roadside assistance is included on every booking. Pro tip: ask the host to record a quick phone video of the dump and refill process, you'll thank yourself at the campground.

What if something breaks down during my RV trip?

Take a breath, you're covered. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, so flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, towing, and mechanical breakdowns all have a number to call any hour of the day or night. Your host is also typically your first text for quick questions like resetting the inverter, and most respond within minutes. The Chicago area has dense service coverage, so help arrives quickly whether you're on I-94 heading toward Milwaukee or pulled over near Starved Rock. Pro tip: before leaving Wilmette, save the roadside assistance number to your phone and snap a photo of the RV's VIN and license plate so you have everything ready if you ever need to call.

Can I take my Wilmette RV rental into Wisconsin, Indiana, or other states?

Yes, interstate travel is one of the best parts of an RV road trip from Wilmette. Most hosts on RVezy allow travel throughout the continental United States, and popular routes include Wisconsin's Door County (about 240 miles north), Michigan's Upper Peninsula (around 400 miles north), the Indiana Dunes (50 miles southeast), and the Great River Road along the Mississippi. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because insurance coverage does not extend there. Cross-border trips into Canada may be allowed depending on the host and protection plan, so message them before booking. Pro tip: confirm any out-of-state plans in your initial message to the host so mileage, return dates, and coverage are all aligned upfront.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validity

How much will fuel cost for my Wilmette RV trip?

Budgeting fuel is easier than most first-timers expect. Campervans and Class B motorhomes typically get 16 to 22 miles per gallon (mpg), Class C motorhomes around 10 to 14 mpg, and larger Class A motorhomes about 7 to 10 mpg. Travel trailers don't burn fuel themselves but reduce your tow vehicle's mpg by roughly 25 to 40 percent. Illinois gas prices tend to run a bit higher than the national average due to state and Cook County taxes, so many RVers cross into Indiana or Wisconsin to fill up on longer trips. Pro tip: apps like GasBuddy will save you real money, and filling up in Indiana before heading back to Wilmette can shave 30 to 60 cents per gallon.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/

How far in advance should I book a campground near Wilmette?

For Illinois state parks, book as early as possible, the ExploreMoreIL reservation system opens a six-month rolling window and summer weekends at Illinois Beach State Park and Chain O' Lakes State Park can sell out within hours of opening. For private RV parks like Chicago Northwest KOA, 2 to 4 months ahead is usually enough for summer weekends, and 2 to 3 weeks for weekdays or shoulder season. Cook County Forest Preserve campgrounds (like Camp Bullfrog Lake and Camp Reinberg) also use online reservations and fill quickly for holiday weekends. Pro tip: book your RV on RVezy first, then the campground, that way you know your exact rig length and hookup needs before you reserve a site.
dnr.illinois.gov/parks/camp/reservation-information.html

What is it like driving an RV around Wilmette and the Chicago area?

Wilmette itself is very RV-friendly, with wide suburban streets, easy access to I-94 (Edens Expressway) just minutes away, and Sheridan Road running scenically along Lake Michigan. The trick is avoiding downtown Chicago and Lake Shore Drive, which has a 10-foot height limit on the north portion and is closed to RVs and trucks. Stick to I-94, I-294 (the Tri-State Tollway), and I-90 for getting in and out of the region. Watch for low railroad viaducts on residential streets, and avoid rush hour (7 to 9 a.m. and 4 to 6:30 p.m.) when possible. Pro tip: if Chicago driving makes you nervous, book a host who offers RV delivery in Wilmette, they'll bring it straight to you.
idot.illinois.gov/travel-information/road-conditions.html

What amenities will I find at campgrounds near Wilmette?

Most established campgrounds within 90 minutes of Wilmette offer the essentials and then some. Illinois Beach State Park has electric hookups (no water or sewer at sites), a centralized dump station, potable water fill stations, flush toilets, and showers. Chain O' Lakes State Park offers Class A sites with electric, water, and access to a dump station. Private parks like Chicago Northwest KOA provide full hookups (water, sewer, 30/50 amp electric), Wi-Fi, laundry, a pool, and a camp store. For dumping near Wilmette without a campground stay, the Illinois Tollway oases on I-94 do not have RV dumps, so plan to dump at your campground. Pro tip: top off fresh water before leaving the campground, you'll use more than you think.
dnr.illinois.gov/parks/park/illinoisbeach.html

What should I expect inside a typical Wilmette RV rental?

You'll find more comfort than you might expect in a motorhome rental in Wilmette. Most RVs come fully equipped with sleeping for 2 to 8 (queen beds, convertible dinettes, bunk beds in family rigs), a kitchen with stove, microwave, fridge/freezer, and sink, a bathroom with toilet and shower, climate control (roof AC and propane furnace), and seatbelts for everyone riding. Many include a TV, Bluetooth stereo, outdoor awning, and an onboard generator for off-grid power. Wi-Fi is hit or miss, so most renters use their phone hotspot. Pro tip: each listing page on RVezy spells out exactly what's included, and you can message the host directly to confirm specifics like CPAP-friendly outlets, child car seat anchors, or a dedicated workspace.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Wilmette%2C%20Illinois

What add-ons and pickup options should I know about?

Wilmette hosts offer plenty of ways to customize your trip. Popular add-ons include linen and bedding packages, kitchen kits with pots and dishes, outdoor camp chairs and tables, bike racks, generators, and even kayak or e-bike rentals (pricing varies by host). Pickup is typically at the host's home in Wilmette or a nearby North Shore suburb like Evanston, Glenview, or Skokie, with a 30 to 60 minute walkthrough. Mileage policies vary (commonly 100 to 150 miles per day with affordable overage), and some listings offer RV rental with unlimited mileage, look for that filter. Pro tip: bundling add-ons through the host is almost always cheaper and easier than sourcing everything yourself, especially linens and a kitchen kit.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Wilmette%2C%20Illinois

How do payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?

Payment is handled securely right through the RVezy platform, no cash or checks change hands with the host. You'll pay your trip total (rental, fees, and chosen protection plan) at booking with a credit or debit card. A refundable security deposit is held separately on your card before pickup, with the amount set by the host and shown on the listing, and it's released after you return the RV in the same condition with no damage and within the agreed mileage and generator hours. Pro tip: do a thorough walkthrough video with the host at pickup and again at drop-off (battery levels, tank levels, exterior condition, mileage). It takes five minutes and protects everyone, making deposit returns smooth and stress-free.

Can I rent an RV in Wilmette during winter?

Yes, winter RV rentals in Wilmette are possible and can be a wonderful adventure, though you'll want the right rig and the right plan. Some hosts winterize their RVs and pause rentals from late November through March, while others keep four-season RVs (with heated holding tanks, enclosed underbellies, and extra insulation) available year-round, perfect for ski trips to Wisconsin, ice fishing on Chain O' Lakes, or a holiday escape. With January lows averaging around 17 degrees Fahrenheit in Wilmette, plan to camp at parks with shore power and ask the host about freeze-protection procedures. Pro tip: filter for four-season RVs and message the host to confirm winter use, then book a campground with 30/50 amp electric so you can run the furnace all night.
