Late May through early October is the prime RV season, with warm Lake Michigan beach weather, open campground amenities, and full nature center programming. July and August bring peak crowds and the warmest water, so holiday weekends book out months ahead. May and September are excellent shoulder-season choices for cooler hiking, thinner crowds, and strong spring or fall bird migration. Winter visits are possible for day use and limited camping, but expect cold, snow, and reduced services.

The 3 Dune Challenge is a 1.5-mile loop that summits the park's three tallest dunes: Mount Jackson, Mount Holden, and Mount Tom. Expect steep sand climbs with roughly 550 feet of total elevation gain. Trailhead parking is at the Nature Center lot and accommodates larger vehicles outside peak hours.
The park fronts roughly three miles of Lake Michigan shoreline with a wide, sandy designated swim beach. Lifeguards are on duty during summer months, and a historic beach pavilion and bathhouse sit at the main beach access. The large beach lot can fit RVs but fills early on summer weekends.
Trail 10 is a 5.5-mile loop through the Dunes State Nature Preserve, considered the park's most scenic route. It passes blowouts, interdunal wetlands, mature oak forest, and beach stretches away from the main swim area. Rated rugged with sustained sandy climbs.
Trail 2 is a shorter, moderate loop linking the campground and Wilson Shelter area through oak woodland. It offers a quieter hike for campers who want to stretch their legs without tackling the big dunes. Flat to rolling terrain with occasional sandy sections.
The park's Nature Center offers exhibits on dune ecology, live animal displays, and ranger-led programs throughout the season. The annual Indiana Dunes Birding Festival each May celebrates the migration of birdlife through the region, with the state park serving as a site host alongside the national park. Paved lot with RV-friendly spaces.
Cyclists can ride the flat park roads and connect to the regional Calumet Trail and Marquette Greenway just outside the gatehouse. These paved and crushed-limestone paths link to national park units and nearby towns. Bike racks are available at the Nature Center and beach.
In winter the park stays open for day-use snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, and hiking when conditions allow. A 3 to 4 inch snow base is recommended and trails are not groomed. Larger day-use lots remain plowed for vehicles.
This RV was perfect! Communication pre rental was great. It was our first time renting an RV and we were given a very in depth description of where everything is and how it works. It was clean, delivered to our doorstep and ready for our use upon arrival. Thank you!

Indiana Dunes State Park, IN, United States
The park is located just off U.S. 12 near Chesterton, Indiana, about a 50-mile, roughly one-hour drive from downtown Chicago via the Indiana Toll Road (I-90) or I-94. South Bend is about 50 miles east, and Indianapolis is about 160 miles south via I-65 and I-80/94. There are no mountain passes, tunnels, or steep grades of concern for RVs, but expect heavy summer weekend traffic on I-80/94 and tight parking at the beach and trailheads during peak hours. Chicago O'Hare and Midway are the closest major airports for fly-and-rent travelers, with South Bend International a smaller regional option.
