Late May through early October is the most comfortable window, with warm days, green prairie, and fully open trails and beach facilities. September and early October bring cooler temperatures, smaller crowds, and strong fall color in the river bluffs. Winter transforms the park into a groomed cross-country skiing and snowshoeing destination, though RV travel in the region becomes more challenging with snow and subfreezing nights. Spring shoulder season can be muddy on the ravine trails after snowmelt.

How to get to Afton State Park

From downtown Saint Paul the park is about a 30 to 40 minute drive east via I-94 and County Road 15 (about 20 miles), and Minneapolis is roughly 45 to 60 minutes away. The final approach uses rural two-lane county roads with rolling hills and a steep descent into the river valley, so larger Class A motorhomes and long fifth wheels should take the descent slowly and watch for low-range grades near the park entrance. There are no major tunnels or mountain passes on the route. The closest major airport for fly-and-rent trips is Minneapolis-Saint Paul International (MSP), roughly 25 miles west of the park.
