Late May through early October is the most comfortable window, with warm days, green prairie, and fully open trails and beach facilities. September and early October bring cooler temperatures, smaller crowds, and strong fall color in the river bluffs. Winter transforms the park into a groomed cross-country skiing and snowshoeing destination, though RV travel in the region becomes more challenging with snow and subfreezing nights. Spring shoulder season can be muddy on the ravine trails after snowmelt.
Cold and snowy. Campground closed to drive-in camping; trails open for skiing and snowshoeing.
Winter conditions continue. Ski trails groomed when snow allows.
Snowmelt can leave trails muddy and slippery in ravines.
Spring thaw; variable conditions and possible trail closures after heavy rain.
Wildflowers and migratory birds active; ticks emerge.
Peak season begins; beach and swim area open.
Warmest month and busiest weekends; reserve day-use parking early.
Peak summer use; occasional thunderstorms.
Comfortable temperatures and early fall color; lower crowds midweek.

Afton State Park offers more than 20 miles of hiking trails through restored prairie, oak savanna, and steep forested ravines above the St. Croix River. Routes range from short loops to full-day outings, with notable climbs in and out of the ravines. Trailhead parking accommodates standard vehicles and tow setups.
The river overlook delivers sweeping views of the St. Croix National Scenic Riverway and the Wisconsin bluffs across the water. It is one of the park's signature photo stops and is reachable on foot from the visitor center area.
A sandy swim beach on the St. Croix River is open during the warmer months and sits near shaded picnic grounds. The area is a short walk from the main parking lot and is popular with families on summer weekends.
A dedicated mountain bike trail system winds through the park's upland prairies and woods with rolling singletrack suitable for intermediate riders. Bikes can be unloaded from the main trailhead parking area.
In winter, Afton grooms miles of classic and skate cross-country ski trails, along with separate snowshoe routes. Snow conditions depend on season, and a Minnesota ski pass is required for skiers aged 16 and older.
The park visitor center features exhibits on local geology, prairie restoration, and St. Croix River ecology. Naturalist programs and guided hikes are offered seasonally.
Restored prairie and oak savanna at Afton attract bluebirds, bobolinks, and raptors, while the riverside woods host warblers during spring and fall migration. Early mornings from the overlook and prairie loops are especially productive.

Afton State Park, MN, United States
From downtown Saint Paul the park is about a 30 to 40 minute drive east via I-94 and County Road 15 (about 20 miles), and Minneapolis is roughly 45 to 60 minutes away. The final approach uses rural two-lane county roads with rolling hills and a steep descent into the river valley, so larger Class A motorhomes and long fifth wheels should take the descent slowly and watch for low-range grades near the park entrance. There are no major tunnels or mountain passes on the route. The closest major airport for fly-and-rent trips is Minneapolis-Saint Paul International (MSP), roughly 25 miles west of the park.
