Best time to visit Big Ridge State Park

Late spring through early fall, roughly May to October, is the most popular window, with warm days suited to swimming, paddling, and lake activities. April and October are strong shoulder months for RV travel, offering cooler temperatures, fewer bugs, and colorful foliage along the ridges. Summer weekends and holidays fill quickly at the campground, so midweek arrivals are easier for larger rigs. Winter stays are quieter but some park services and seasonal facilities operate on reduced schedules.

How to get to Big Ridge State Park

The park is reached from Knoxville in about 40 minutes by taking I-75 north to Highway 61 east toward Maynardville, a drive of roughly 25 miles. From the Tri-Cities area (Johnson City and Kingsport), plan on about two hours via I-81 and I-75. The access roads along Highway 61 include rolling hills, curves, and a few steeper grades typical of East Tennessee, so larger motorhomes and trailers should drive cautiously and watch for low-hanging tree limbs on the campground loop. The nearest major airport for fly-and-rent travelers is McGhee Tyson Airport in Knoxville, about an hour south of the park.
