Best time to visit Henderson Beach State Park

Spring (March through May) and fall (late September through November) are the best times to visit, with warm Gulf water, mild daytime temperatures in the 70s and 80s Fahrenheit, and fewer crowds than peak summer. Summer brings the warmest swimming conditions but also the largest crowds, highest humidity, and frequent afternoon thunderstorms, with campground reservations often booked months in advance. Winter is mild and quiet, ideal for snowbirds and RV travelers seeking cooler, uncrowded beach walks, though water temperatures are too cold for comfortable swimming. Hurricane season runs June through November, so RVers should monitor forecasts closely in late summer and early fall.

Things to do at Henderson Beach State Park

  • Henderson Beach Easy
    RV parking available

Henderson Beach is a mile-plus stretch of sugar-white quartz sand and emerald Gulf water that defines the park. Visitors can swim, sunbathe, surf fish, and walk along one of the Emerald Coast's most protected shorelines. Boardwalks lead from parking areas over the dunes to the beach.

  • Henderson Beach Nature Trail Easy
    RV parking available

The park's nature trail is a short, easy loop through coastal scrub and dune habitat behind the beach. Interpretive signs highlight native plants and wildlife typical of the Florida Panhandle coast. The trailhead is near the day-use parking area.

  • Surf Fishing
    RV parking available

Surf fishing from the Gulf-front beach is a popular activity for anglers targeting pompano, whiting, redfish, and Spanish mackerel. A valid Florida saltwater fishing license is required for adults. Anglers can drive their RVs into the day-use lot and walk gear over the boardwalks.

  • Campground Beach Access Easy
    RV parking available

The family campground sits behind the dunes with direct boardwalk access to the beach. RV campers can walk from their site to the Gulf in minutes, making it a convenient base for beach days. Sites include water and electric hookups, a picnic table, and fire ring.

  • Picnicking and Pavilions Easy
    RV parking available

Shaded picnic areas and reservable pavilions are spread throughout the park near the beach access points. Grills and restrooms are available, making it easy for RV travelers to spend the day without leaving the park. Pavilions can be reserved in advance for groups.

  • Dune and Wildlife Viewing Easy
    RV parking available

The park protects some of the largest remaining natural dunes along the Destin shoreline, rising up to 30 feet. Visitors commonly spot shorebirds, gopher tortoises, and migrating monarch butterflies in season. Stay on marked boardwalks to protect the fragile dune ecosystem.

  • Destin Harbor Day Trip

Destin Harbor is a short drive from the park and offers charter fishing, dolphin cruises, and waterfront dining. RVers typically leave their rig at the campground and use a tow vehicle or rideshare for the outing. It is one of the best saltwater fishing ports on the Gulf Coast.

Henderson Beach State Park sits directly on U.S. Highway 98 in Destin, Florida, making access straightforward for RVs with no tunnels, passes, or steep grades to worry about. From Pensacola the drive is roughly 50 miles, about one hour east; from Panama City it is about 50 miles, about one hour west; and from Mobile, Alabama it is roughly 130 miles, about two and a half hours.
