Best time to visit Moran State Park

Late June through early September offers the warmest, driest weather and the best conditions for swimming at Cascade and Mountain lakes, hiking, and summit views from Mount Constitution. These months also bring the heaviest ferry demand, so reservations for both campsites and Washington State Ferries fill well in advance. Shoulder seasons in May and late September deliver cooler temperatures, quieter trails, and easier ferry bookings, though some park concessions scale back. The indoor summit visitor center and gift shop is open April through October, with outdoor exhibits available year round.

Things to do at Moran State Park

  • Drive or Hike to the Mount Constitution Summit Moderate

The Mount Constitution summit is the highest point in the San Juan Islands and the park's signature viewpoint. Trails and roads lead to the top of Mount Constitution, whose 2,409 foot summit is crowned by a stone observation tower built by the Civilian Conservation Corps. Large RVs should stay at the main campgrounds and drive smaller vehicles to the top. nps.gov/places/moran-state-park.htm

  • Swim and Paddle at Cascade Lake Easy
    RV parking available

Cascade Lake is the park's main day-use hub with a swimming beach, picnic area, and boat rentals. The park has concessionaires who rent various watercraft to visitors and a snack bar, The Sugar Shack, located on Cascade Lake. RV parking is available in the main day-use lot.

  • Fish and Paddle on Mountain Lake Easy
    RV parking available

Mountain Lake is the largest lake in the park and a quieter spot for paddling and fishing. Visitors can fish for lake trout, kayak, or camp at sites around the lake. A campground and boat launch sit on the west shore with space for tow vehicles.

  • Cascade Falls Trail Easy

Cascade Falls is a short forest walk to one of the prettiest waterfalls in the San Juan Islands. The trail is well signed and accessible from a small trailhead parking area off the main park road. Best viewed in spring and early summer when flow is highest.

  • Mountain Lake Loop Trail Moderate
    RV parking available

The Mountain Lake Loop is a roughly 3.9 mile trail circling the shoreline through mossy second-growth forest. It offers near-constant lake views and minimal elevation change. Trailhead parking is near the Mountain Lake Campground.

  • Mountain Biking the Park's Trail Network Moderate
    RV parking available

Moran has one of the best trail networks in the San Juans for riders. Its 38-mile hiking trail network is the largest in the archipelago, and visitors can go mountain biking on designated sections. Check current seasonal bike closures at the trailhead kiosk before riding.

  • Summit Visitor Center and Observation Tower Easy

The stone observation tower on Mount Constitution houses interpretive exhibits on the San Juan Islands. The park operates the Summit Visitor Center, which interprets the natural history of the San Juan Islands, with the indoor center and gift shop open April through October and outdoor exhibits available year round. nps.gov/places/moran-state-park.htm

This was our first time renting a trailer and it was awesome! Mark and his wife were lovely people and it was a pleasure meeting and communicating with them. We had everything we needed in the trailer and it worked perfectly for where we were with no hookups. Anytime we had questions, Mark was very quick to answer and explained everything about the trailer before they left. Thank you so much guys! :)

How to get to Moran State Park

Moran State Park sits on Orcas Island and is reached only by boat or small plane. Washington State Ferries provides regular transportation between Anacortes on the mainland and the San Juan Islands, including Orcas. From Seattle, plan roughly 1.5 to 2 hours driving to the Anacortes ferry terminal, then about a 1 hour and 15 minute ferry crossing to Orcas, followed by a 13 mile drive from the ferry landing at the south end of the island to the park entrance near Eastsound. RV travelers should pre-book vehicle space on the ferry, note that ferries charge by vehicle length for rigs and trailers, and be aware that the road up Mount Constitution is steep, narrow, and winding with tight switchbacks not recommended for large motorhomes or trailers. The nearest commercial airport for fly-and-rent trips is Seattle-Tacoma International (SEA).
