How to get to Mount Rushmore National Memorial
The memorial sits along South Dakota Highway 244, about 25 miles southwest of Rapid City (roughly a 45-minute drive) and 2 miles southwest of Keystone. Rapid City Regional Airport (RAP) is the closest airport for fly-and-rent trips, about 35 miles east. RV drivers should avoid the scenic Iron Mountain Road (US 16A) and Needles Highway (SD 87), which have narrow, single-lane tunnels and tight pigtail bridges not suited to large motorhomes or trailers; use US 16 from Rapid City instead. Watch for steep mountain grades, wildlife on the road, and winter closures during hazardous weather.
