Late June through early September offers the most reliable weather for the boat crossing, with dry, mild days and calmer seas that suit kayakers and small-boat visitors. July and August are peak season, when the lighthouse museum is typically staffed on summer weekends and campsites in Active Cove fill quickly on a first-come, first-served basis. May, June, and September are excellent shoulder-season windows with fewer boaters and strong wildflower displays. Winter crossings are possible but often rough, with frequent southerly wind storms.

The Patos Island Lighthouse is a historic beacon built in 1893 on the westernmost point of the island. A small interpretive museum operated by Keepers of the Patos Light is typically open on summer weekends from June through September, weather permitting. The site offers sweeping views across Haro Strait toward Canada. blm.gov/visit/patos-island
This 1.5 mile loop trail circles the island through coastal forest, rocky overlooks, and wildflower meadows. It passes the lighthouse, beach access points, and remnants of an abandoned Coast Guard station. Elevation gain is minimal and the footing is generally good. nps.gov/places/patos-island-marine-state-park.htm
Active Cove offers seven primitive campsites and two mooring buoys on a first-come, first-served basis. Facilities are limited to a vault toilet and a picnic area, with no potable water available on the island. Visitors must pack in all supplies and pack out all trash under Leave No Trace principles. blm.gov/visit/patos-island
Experienced paddlers can reach Patos Island by sea kayak from northern Orcas Island, roughly five miles to the southeast. Strong currents in Boundary Pass and around the island demand careful planning, tide charts, and marine weather checks. Many visitors choose guided outfitters based on Orcas. blm.gov/visit/patos-island
Patos Island is a rich spot for spotting bald eagles, seabirds, harbor seals, porpoises, and occasionally orcas offshore. The Spanish name translates to Island of Ducks, reflecting the abundant bird life observed by early explorers. Quiet beaches and shoreline overlooks offer the best vantage points. nps.gov/places/patos-island-marine-state-park.htm
From Patos Island, visitors can spot the international boundary marker that delineates the maritime border between the United States and Canada. The island is the northwestern-most point in the contiguous 48 states, offering a unique geographic milestone. Bring binoculars for the best view across the water. nps.gov/places/patos-island-marine-state-park.htm
Spring and early summer bring vibrant wildflower displays along the island's beaches, wooded areas, and rocky overlooks. Common sightings include chocolate lily, camas, and sea blush. Stay on established paths to protect fragile meadow habitat. blm.gov/visit/patos-island

Patos Island Marine State Park, WA, United States
Patos Island has no ferry or road access, so RV travelers drive to a mainland marina and continue by private boat, charter, or kayak. The nearest launch sites are at Point Roberts Marina (13 miles north), Blaine Harbor (11 miles northeast), and Squallicum Harbor in Bellingham (24 miles east). From Seattle, plan roughly 90 miles and 2 hours to Bellingham via I-5, a straightforward RV route with no tunnels or steep mountain passes. Bellingham International Airport is the closest regional airport for fly-and-rent travelers, while Sea-Tac International offers broader flight options.
