Campgrounds and RV parks near Drift Pile River 150, AB

Lesser Slave Lake is the focal point for activity. The lake holds walleye, northern pike, lake whitefish and yellow perch, so fishing is the dominant draw, with boat launches at Spruce Point Park Campground and Marina, Shaws Point Lakeside Resort and Hilliards Bay Provincial Park. Sandy beaches at Hilliards Bay and Spruce Point are shallow well offshore, which suits families with young kids. The lake also supports swimming, paddling, waterskiing and windsurfing. Hilliards Bay has more than 3 km of trails that connect into the Trans Canada Trail network, plus a Boreal Forest Interpretive trail. The lake sits on a major migratory flyway, so birdwatching is strong in spring and fall. Winagami Lake Provincial Park adds quieter paddling and a wading pool in the day-use area.

The usable RV season is short. Provincial campgrounds in the area, including Hilliards Bay and Winagami Lake, generally open around the May long weekend and close after the September long weekend, with water shut off in mid-September at Winagami Lake. Private operators such as Spruce Point Park and Shaws Point follow a similar summer-only pattern, with most lakeside campgrounds operating May through September. Peak demand runs from late June through August, when long daylight hours and warm afternoons bring beach traffic and weekend fishing crowds. Reservable provincial sites are typically fully booked on summer long weekends well before arrival. Shoulder seasons in May and September are quieter and cooler, and the early season is good for songbird migration through the Lesser Slave Lake flyway. Winter use is limited but possible at Hilliards Bay, which stays open year-round and reverts to first-come first-served after the September long weekend. Ice fishing on Lesser Slave Lake is a recognized winter activity. Wildfire smoke can be a factor in mid to late summer across northern Alberta.

Sites in the area range from powered gravel RV pads to unserviced bush sites. Provincial campgrounds offer a mix of powered and unserviced sites with pit toilets in the loops and a central shower building with flush toilets and laundry. Dump stations are usually located near the park entrance rather than inside the campground loops, so plan an extra stop on the way out. Water is available from standpipes rather than at individual sites. Cell service is patchy outside the towns of High Prairie, Kinuso and Slave Lake. The nearest full grocery, fuel and supply stops are in High Prairie, roughly a 25 to 35 minute drive from the lakeshore campgrounds. Forest tent caterpillar outbreaks occur in cycles in the boreal forest and can be heavy in some summers. Black bears are present, so standard bear-safe food storage applies. Bring bug spray for mosquitoes and biting flies, especially in June and July.
