Campgrounds and RV parks near Spirit River, AB

Moonshine Lake is the local hub for outdoor recreation. The lake is stocked with rainbow trout, and visitors can swim, paddle, fish from the pier, or launch a non-powered or electric motor boat. Lakeview Loop trail follows part of the shore, and Jack Bird Pond, roughly 3.5 km southeast of the main campground, offers waterfowl viewing in a small wetland complex. At Dunvegan Provincial Park, travellers can walk riverside trails, paddle the Peace River from the public boat launch, or tour the Historic Dunvegan site with its restored fur trade and mission buildings. The nearby Dunvegan Gardens are a common stop for produce, ice cream, and mini-golf. Golfers can play Spruce Meadows Golf & Country Club, and families heading toward Grande Prairie often visit the Philip J. Currie Dinosaur Museum and the Pipestone Creek fossil beds.

The Peace Country has a short, intense camping season. Most provincial campgrounds in the area open around the Victoria Day long weekend in May and close after the Labour Day long weekend in early September, with the warmest, driest stretch falling in July and August. Spring trips can be cold and wet. Northern Alberta has temperamental weather, and overnight temperatures often drop near or below freezing into May. Snow can linger on trails and access roads early in the season. Summer brings long daylight hours this far north, warm afternoons, and the highest rainfall of the year, with thunderstorms common in June and July. Wildfire smoke from boreal fires can affect air quality in mid to late summer, so check Alberta Wildfire status and any fire bans before heading out. Fall arrives early. September days can still be pleasant, but nights cool quickly and most serviced campgrounds shut down by mid-month. Winter use is limited mainly to day-use access at places like Moonshine Lake, where cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and ice fishing take over, plus a few year-round private parks.

Provincial sites in the area are powered but rustic. Dunvegan offers 67 powered sites with picnic tables, fire pits, tap water, a sewage disposal area, and pit toilets, set among lightly treed slopes of the Peace River valley. Moonshine Lake has roughly 110 powered sites with 15/30 amp service, showers, sewage disposal, and free firewood, plus a beach, boat launch, pier, and playground. This is bear country, and cougar sightings have also been reported in Moonshine Lake Provincial Park. Food should be stored in the RV, never in tents, and garbage must go in the containers provided. Cell coverage is patchy between towns, so download maps before leaving Spirit River or Grande Prairie. Quiet hours at provincial parks run from 11:00 pm to 7:00 am, alcohol is restricted to registered campsites, and pets must be leashed and kept off public beaches and playgrounds.
