Camping near Stavely, Alberta
Stavely is a small town in the Municipal District of Willow Creek, set on Highway 2 between Calgary and Lethbridge in southern Alberta. It sits along the eastern edge of the foothills of the Canadian Rocky Mountains. The location works well as an RV base because it splits the distance between Calgary's suburbs to the north and the Crowsnest Pass and Waterton areas to the south.
Campgrounds in the area range from full-service RV resorts to rustic provincial sites. JJS RV Resort, just outside town, is the closest full-hookup option for larger rigs. George Lane Park and Campground sits north in High River along the Highwood River, while South - Chain Lakes Provincial Park lies west in the foothills on Highway 22. Chain Lakes sits in montane landscapes at the base of the Rocky Mountains and offers over 90 reservable campsites plus one group camp and a large day-use area. Oldman River Provincial Recreation Area and Riverbend Campground round out the practical options within easy driving range.
Things to do near Stavely
Activities in the Stavely area include the Stavely Museum, golfing, birding, fishing, hiking, river floating, swimming, geocaching, biking, and ice fishing in winter. Clear Lake sits 18 km east, Pine Coulee Reservoir 14 km west, and Chain Lakes Reservoir about 66 km west in the foothills. At Chain Lakes, visitors fish for trout, paddle on calm water, and watch for pelicans, trumpeter swans, and birds of prey. The Bomber Command Museum of Canada is 25 km north in Nanton, and Bar U Ranch National Historic Site sits about 74 km away. Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is within day-trip range to the southwest.

The practical RV season in this part of southern Alberta runs from May through September, with shoulder weeks on either side depending on snow and ground conditions. Most Alberta Parks campgrounds operate from mid-May to the end of September. Chain Lakes Provincial Park is open year-round and offers camping and day-use facilities, making it one of the few options for late-fall or winter trips when most foothills campgrounds close. Loop B at Chain Lakes stays open through the winter, with ice fishing on the reservoir a popular draw.
July and August are the busiest months, when summer warmth is reliable and reservoir activities are at peak. June tends to be the wettest month of the year in this part of the foothills, with the most rainfall days. Wind is a near-constant factor along the Highway 22 corridor, especially in spring and fall. Wildfire smoke from British Columbia or northern Alberta can drift in during late summer, and provincial fire bans are common in dry years.

How to book campgrounds near Stavely
Alberta provincial campgrounds use the Alberta Parks reservation system at reserve.albertaparks.ca. Individual campsite reservations can be made up to 90 days in advance of the arrival date, with the booking window advancing one day each morning at 9:00 a.m. Mountain Time. Group and comfort camping reservations open 180 days out. About 40 percent of sites in many provincial campgrounds remain first-come, first-served.
Municipal and private campgrounds book directly. George Lane Park and Campground is run by the local Lions Club and handles bookings by phone and email, with messages typically returned in the spring. JJS RV Resort and Riverbend Campground take reservations through their own sites. For long weekends in July or August, book the popular provincial loops as soon as the 90-day window opens.
What to expect at campgrounds near Stavely
Site quality varies sharply by campground type. JJS RV Resort has 43 full-hookup sites, is open all year, and accepts big rigs up to 80 feet, with 30 and 50 amp service and about 20 pull-throughs, making it the most rig-friendly base in the area. George Lane Park and Campground has individual sites among mature trees with 15 and 30 amp power, fire pits, and picnic tables along the Highwood River. South - Chain Lakes Provincial Park offers over 90 reservable sites with both powered and unserviced options, willow vegetation for privacy, and potable water throughout. Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Stavely, AB
How much does an RV rental in Stavely, AB typically cost?
RV rental in Stavely is one of the most affordable ways to explore southern Alberta. Nightly rates on RVezy typically start around CA$100 to CA$130 for compact travel trailers and run roughly CA$200 to CA$300 for Class C motorhomes that sleep the whole family, with larger luxury units priced higher. Because Stavely sits on Highway 2 between Calgary and Lethbridge, you can often find better value here than booking out of the big city. To save more, book midweek, travel in May, June, or September shoulder season, and look for hosts offering local delivery. Pro tip: many Stavely hosts offer weekly discounts that can reduce your nightly rate when you bundle multiple nights.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Stavely%2C%20AlbertaDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Stavely, AB?
Good news: your regular Class 5 Alberta driver's licence (or equivalent from any province, state, or country) is all you need to rent an RV in Stavely. No commercial licence, no air brake endorsement, and no special RV certification is required for the motorhomes and trailers listed on RVezy. Approved drivers must generally be 25 or older with a valid licence, and RVezy verifies your ID securely during booking. Visiting from overseas? Bring an International Driving Permit alongside your home licence and you are ready to roll out onto Highway 2 toward the Rockies.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat protection and roadside assistance is included with my RV rental in Stavely?
Every RV rental in Stavely booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can head out on Highway 2 with real peace of mind. At checkout you choose the protection plan that fits your comfort level (the renter selects this, not the host), and higher tiers reduce your out-of-pocket responsibility for covered damages. If you get a flat heading toward Chain Lakes Provincial Park or a battery dies at Pine Coulee Reservoir, one call dispatches help. It is the safety net that lets first-time renters relax and enjoy the drive through the Alberta foothills.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat happens if I need to cancel my Stavely RV rental?
Booking is low-risk because RVezy (not individual hosts) sets the cancellation policy for every reservation, and the policy is not displayed on the listing itself: you will see the applicable terms at checkout and in your RVezy account before confirming. Refund amounts depend on how far in advance you cancel. If the host cancels, RVezy refunds the guest or offers travel credit. Pro tip: book early to lock in the best Class C motorhome or travel trailer for Calgary Stampede week or summer rodeo season, then review the cancellation terms at checkout so you know exactly where you stand.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in Stavely?
Absolutely, pet-friendly RV rental in Stavely is easy to find. Just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy and you'll see motorhomes and trailers whose hosts welcome dogs (and sometimes cats). Many Stavely hosts even leave a few extras like a tie-out or food mat. Once you're on the road, your pup will love Willow Creek Provincial Park 16 km west, where leashed dogs are welcome on the trails along the creek, and Chain Lakes Provincial Park 66 km west has wide-open shorelines for a happy off-leash sniff (within posted rules). Message the host before booking to confirm pet fees and any size limits.
albertaparks.ca/parks/south/willow-creek-pp/Can the RV be delivered to my campsite or home near Stavely?
Yes, RV delivery in Stavely is one of the most popular options on RVezy, especially for first-time renters. Many local hosts will tow or drive the RV directly to Centennial Park Campground in town, Stavely Elks Pine Coulee Park, Willow Creek Provincial Park, or even a private acreage in the surrounding MD of Willow Creek. They'll level it, hook up power and water, and walk you through every system before handing over the keys. Filter listings by Delivery to see who offers it and their distance fees. It turns your motorhome rental in Stavely into a true turnkey vacation: arrive, unpack, and start enjoying the foothills.
mdwillowcreek.com/How do mileage limits work, and how far can I realistically drive?
Most Stavely hosts include between 100 and 200 km per day, with extra kilometres charged at a small per-km rate, and some listings even offer RV rental with unlimited mileage for longer road trips. To put that in perspective from Stavely: Calgary is just 110 km north, Waterton Lakes National Park is about 180 km south, Banff is 240 km northwest, Drumheller's Badlands sit 220 km northeast, and Lethbridge is only 90 km south. A typical 7-day Alberta loop runs 800 to 1,200 km, which fits comfortably within most plans. Pro tip: estimate your route before booking and pick a listing whose mileage policy matches.
alberta.ca/highway-conditions-and-roadside-servicesWhere are the best campgrounds near Stavely to park my RV?
You are spoiled for choice for RV camping in Stavely. Willow Creek Provincial Park, about 16 km west, offers shaded creekside sites that are great for families and bookable through Alberta Parks. Chain Lakes Provincial Park, roughly 66 km west, puts you right against the Rocky Mountain foothills with powered sites and excellent fishing. Pine Coulee Reservoir, just west of Stavely, is a popular spot for anglers and boaters. Nanton and Claresholm, both a short drive on Highway 2, also have municipal campgrounds with hookups. Most fill up on summer weekends, so reserve through reserve.albertaparks.ca as soon as your trip dates are set.
albertaparks.ca/parks/south/chain-lakes-pp/When is the best time of year for an RV trip from Stavely?
The sweet spot for a Stavely RV trip is mid-May through late September, when daytime highs sit between 18 and 26 C and evenings cool to a comfy 8 to 12 C, perfect for campfires under huge prairie skies. July and August are peak warmth and lake season at Pine Coulee and Chain Lakes, while early June bursts with wildflowers in the foothills and September brings golden aspens and far fewer crowds. Winters in this part of southern Alberta are cold (often below minus 15 C) but bring the famous chinook winds that can spike temperatures by 20 degrees in hours. Book shoulder-season dates for the best value and quiet campgrounds.
climate.weather.gc.ca/climate_normals/I've never driven an RV before. Will I be okay?
You'll be totally fine, and Stavely is actually one of the friendliest places in Alberta to learn. First time renting an RV? Your host gives you a full hands-on walkthrough at pickup covering driving, propane, water, the awning, and dumping, and they're a text away during your trip. Highway 2 between Stavely and Calgary is wide, flat, and straight, with easy pull-offs in Nanton and Claresholm to practice. Most renters choose a Class C motorhome or smaller travel trailer for their first trip because they drive like a big van. Pro tip: pick up early in the day so you can do a slow practice loop before heading to the campground.
alberta.ca/driving-safelyWhat happens if the RV breaks down during my trip?
Help is one phone call away, 24/7, with roadside assistance included on every RVezy booking through the renter protection plan. If you get a flat on Highway 2, a propane issue at Willow Creek Provincial Park, or a dead battery overnight at Chain Lakes, roadside assistance can dispatch a technician, tow truck, or tire service to your location. Your host is also a direct contact for quick questions about the quirks of their specific RV, and RVezy customer support is reachable before, during, and after your trip. Pro tip: save the roadside number in your phone before you leave Stavely and snap a photo of the RV's VIN and licence plate just in case.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Stavely RV rental across the US border or to other provinces?
Cross-province travel within Canada is generally allowed, so an RV road trip from Stavely to BC's Kootenays, Saskatchewan, or up to Jasper is on the table once you confirm with your host. US cross-border trips (think Glacier National Park, just over 3 hours south via the Carway/Piegan crossing) are sometimes permitted depending on the host and the insurance policy on the unit, so always message the host before booking to confirm. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals. Pro tip: have your passport, vehicle paperwork, and host's written approval ready at the border to make the crossing smooth.
cbsa-asfc.gc.ca/travel-voyage/menu-eng.htmlHow much should I budget for fuel on a Stavely RV trip?
Fuel is the biggest variable in any Alberta RV budget, but it is manageable. Expect a Class C motorhome to use roughly 18 to 22 L/100 km, while travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle and typically add 30 to 50 percent over its usual consumption. Alberta gas prices are among the lowest in Canada. A 1,000 km loop from Stavely to Banff, Drumheller, and back generally runs a few hundred dollars in fuel depending on current pump prices. Pro tip: check current prices in Claresholm or Nanton before heading west into the mountains, where fuel typically costs more.
www2.nrcan.gc.ca/eneene/sources/pripri/prices_bycity_e.cfmHow far in advance should I book a campground near Stavely?
For Alberta Provincial Parks like Chain Lakes and Willow Creek, reservations open 90 days in advance through reserve.albertaparks.ca, and prime July and August weekends, especially around Calgary Stampede week, fill quickly once the window opens. Municipal and Elks-run campgrounds in and around Stavely vary between reservable and first-come, first-served, so check each campground's website before you go. For an early-summer or September trip, you can usually book 2 to 4 weeks out. Pro tip: once you confirm your RV rental in Stavely on RVezy, lock in the campground the same day so your dates align perfectly.
reserve.albertaparks.ca/What are local driving conditions like around Stavely?
Driving an RV around Stavely is delightfully easy. Highway 2 (the QEII) is a divided four-lane with generous shoulders and a 110 km/h limit, and Highway 527 and 533 west toward the foothills are paved two-lanes with gentle curves. The real thing to watch for is wind: this stretch of southern Alberta is famously gusty, especially during chinooks, so high-profile RVs should slow down on exposed prairie sections and grip the wheel firmly. Winter brings ice and blowing snow, while summer thunderstorms occasionally drop hail. Wildlife (deer, antelope, and the occasional moose) appear at dawn and dusk. Check 511 Alberta before you roll for live road conditions and cameras.
511.alberta.ca/What hookups and amenities can I expect at Stavely-area campgrounds?
Campgrounds near Stavely offer a solid mix of comfort and nature. Willow Creek Provincial Park has unserviced and powered sites with vault toilets and a sani-dump near the entrance. Chain Lakes Provincial Park offers powered sites, flush toilets, and a fish-cleaning station. Pine Coulee Reservoir provides powered sites and boat launch access. Municipal campgrounds in Nanton and Claresholm offer 15/30-amp power, water, and dump stations within a short drive of Stavely. Pro tip: top up fresh water before leaving town so you are ready to boondock anywhere the road takes you, and confirm hookup details on each park's official page before booking.
albertaparks.ca/parks/south/willow-creek-pp/information-facilities/What amenities come inside a typical Stavely RV rental?
Even a cheap RV rental in Stavely comes loaded with everything you need. Expect a real bed (most sleep 4 to 8), a kitchen with fridge, freezer, stove, microwave, sink and cookware, a bathroom with shower and toilet, furnace and air conditioning, and seatbelted seating for travel. Class C motorhomes usually have an over-cab bunk that kids love, while travel trailers and fifth wheels often offer slide-outs for spacious living rooms. Many Stavely listings include extras like a generator (handy for boondocking near Chain Lakes), outdoor speakers, a BBQ, camping chairs, and starter supplies. Cell and WiFi service can be patchy in the foothills, so download maps and entertainment before leaving town.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Stavely%2C%20AlbertaWhat add-ons and pickup options should I know about for a Stavely RV rental?
Stavely hosts make trip prep easy with optional add-ons priced transparently at checkout. Common extras include linen and kitchen kits, generators, bike racks, BBQs, camping chairs, outdoor tables, and stocked propane. Pickup is usually at the host's home in or near Stavely, with most offering a 30 to 60 minute orientation covering driving, propane, water, the awning, and dumping. Mileage policies vary by listing, from a daily allowance to unlimited, and many hosts also offer delivery to nearby campgrounds like Pine Coulee or Willow Creek Provincial Park. Pro tip: if you are flying into Calgary International (YYC), filter for hosts who deliver to YYC or Calgary, then drive the easy 110 km south to Stavely already settled in.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Stavely%2C%20AlbertaHow does payment and the security deposit work?
Payment is simple and secure: you pay through RVezy with a credit card at the time of booking, and your funds are held by RVezy until the trip begins, so the host is only paid after pickup. A refundable security deposit is separate from the booking payment and is pre-authorized (not charged) on your card before the trip, with the amount set by the host and shown at checkout. It is released after a clean return. To avoid any deposit issues, do a photo walkaround at pickup and dropoff, return the RV at the agreed fuel and propane levels, and follow the host's mileage and dumping rules.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksWhat are the best road trip destinations from Stavely?
An RV road trip from Stavely puts some of Canada's most spectacular landscapes within easy reach. Head north about 110 km to Calgary for the Stampede and Heritage Park, or roughly 220 km northeast to Drumheller for the Royal Tyrrell Museum and the Hoodoos. Drive about 180 km south to Waterton Lakes National Park for turquoise lakes and bighorn sheep, or around 240 km northwest to Banff and Lake Louise for postcard mountain views. History lovers should stop at the Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump UNESCO site and Bar U Ranch National Historic Site, both within an easy day trip. Pro tip: build a 7-day loop hitting Waterton, the Crowsnest Pass, and Chain Lakes for a perfect southern Alberta sampler.
