Lesser Slave Lake is the regional draw. The lake holds northern pike, walleye, lake whitefish, and yellow perch, and most campgrounds have a boat launch or are minutes from one. Land-based activities include hiking and mountain biking on shoreline trails, including segments that connect to the Trans-Canada Trail network from Marten River Campground at Lesser Slave Lake Provincial Park and Hilliards Bay Provincial Park. The Boreal Centre for Bird Conservation inside Lesser Slave Lake Provincial Park has hands-on exhibits and short interpretive trails. The adjacent Lesser Slave Lake Bird Observatory tracks more than 240 species. Marten Mountain Viewpoint offers an elevated look over the lake. The town of Slave Lake covers groceries, fuel, and supplies.

The camping season in this part of northern Alberta is short and concentrated. Most provincial-park campgrounds and private resorts on Lesser Slave Lake operate from the May long weekend through the September long weekend, with shoulder-season access at some parks into early or mid-October. Hilliards Bay Provincial Park front-country sites are 100 percent reservable through the summer season, then shift to first-come, first-served after the September long weekend. Marten River Campground typically operates from mid-May into early October. July and August are peak months for warm weather, lake swimming, and fishing, but they are also the wettest part of the year, with July averaging roughly 110 mm of precipitation. Spring brings ice-off and bird migration, which is a major draw at the Lesser Slave Lake Bird Observatory. Forest tent caterpillars are a natural part of the boreal forest and experience a population boom roughly every decade; Alberta Parks does not issue refunds for early departures tied to an outbreak. Fall is quieter and cooler, with early frosts possible by mid-September.

Expect classic boreal-forest camping: spruce and aspen cover, sandy beaches, biting insects in early summer, and long northern daylight hours in June and July. Provincial-park sites at Hilliards Bay Provincial Park and Marten River Campground are well-spaced and treed, with pit toilets in the loops and a central shower building offering flush toilets, coin-operated showers, and a laundromat. Sewage disposal is provided, though it may be a short drive from the campground loops; at Hilliards Bay the dump station sits at the park entrance about 3.4 km west of the campground. Private resorts on the lake offer powered sites and, at some operators, full hookups, and are typically closer to town services. Cell coverage is generally good near Slave Lake and patchy on the lake's north and west shores. Bears and other wildlife are present; standard food-storage practice applies.
