Camping near Cowichan Bay
Cowichan Bay sits on the east coast of southern Vancouver Island, roughly halfway between Victoria and Nanaimo. The village fronts a working harbour on the Cowichan Estuary, and the surrounding Cowichan Valley has a mild coastal climate that extends the practical RV season well beyond the summer peak.
Campgrounds in the area run from full-service private parks to a provincial campground on the water. Riverside RV & Camping and Osborne Bay Resort are private operations suited to larger rigs, while Bamberton Provincial Park offers vehicle-accessible sites on the Saanich Inlet without hookups. Mowhinna Creek Campground and Cedar Beach Resort &Campground round out the closer options, giving renters a mix of forested, riverside, and beach-adjacent settings.
Most campgrounds sit within a short drive of Cowichan Bay Village, Duncan, Mill Bay, and the Trans-Canada Highway, which keeps grocery runs, dump stations, and ferry connections easy to plan around.
Things to do around Cowichan Bay
The Cowichan Estuary draws harbour seals, waterfowl, and a spring nesting colony of Pacific Great Blue Herons, and the Cowichan Estuary Nature Centre at the west end of the village has interactive exhibits geared to families. Cowichan Bay Village itself is a compact waterfront strip with a maritime centre, bakeries, and seafood restaurants along the pier.
Inland, the Kinsol Trestle is one of the tallest free-standing timber rail trestles in the world, reached by a short gravel walk from the main parking lot and connected to the Cowichan Valley Trail for cycling. The valley also holds Vancouver Island's main winemaking region, with a cluster of wineries and Merridale Cidery around Cobble Hill and Cowichan Bay. Nearby Bamberton fronts a 225 metre sandy beach on the Saanich Inlet, popular for swimming and paddling.

July and August are the busiest months, with warm, dry days, low rainfall, and long evenings well suited to beach time on the Saanich Inlet and paddling from Cowichan Bay. Bookings at the private parks and at Bamberton Provincial Park tighten sharply for weekends in this window, and June also runs busy as nearby school groups visit the Bamberton beach for intertidal field trips.
Spring and early fall are strong shoulder seasons. Creeks and waterfalls run heavier in spring, wineries and cideries stay open into October, and shoulder-season weekends are noticeably easier to book. Rain picks up quickly from late October onward, with November typically the wettest month.
Winter camping is possible thanks to the mild coastal climate, but expect reduced services. At Bamberton, only a portion of the campground stays open from November through late March, with no water or firewood supplied and reservations unavailable during that window. Private parks in the valley often shift to reduced amenities and longer-stay bookings outside the peak.

We went on our first RV trip as a family and had a fantastic time. The host was communicative and the RV was clean and worked really well. We will for sure rent again.

This was our second year renting with Mark! He is great to deal with and quick to respond. The trailer is well stocked with cooking supplies, and dishes for 4 people. Bed is comfortable and trailer is clean. We camped as 2 adults and 1 dog and it was the perfect size. We did dry camping (no power hook ups) and loved that the trailer had solar power and ran on propane so we could use the stove & fridge/freezer and charge our devices (and heat for those chilly fall nights on the ocean). Would definitely rent again! He was also flexible on the pick up and drop off time which was great as I ran a bit later than planned on delivery day.

Great communication, everything on-time and as expected. Mark and his trailer are both lovely.

How to book a campsite near Cowichan Bay
Bamberton Provincial Park is reserved through the BC Parks reservation system at camping.bcparks.ca. Reservations are available during the peak season, roughly May through October, and a small number of sites remain first-come, first-served year-round. Cancellations are common, so checking the system in the days before arrival can open up sold-out weekends.
Private campgrounds such as Riverside RV & Camping, Osborne Bay Resort, Mowhinna Creek Campground, and Cedar Beach Resort &Campground are booked directly with each operator by phone or through their own websites. Confirm rig length, hookup type, slide clearance, and pet policies at the time of booking. For long weekends between the May and October long weekends, reserving eight or more weeks out is prudent.
What to expect on the ground
Roads into the Cowichan area are straightforward for RV renters. The Trans-Canada Highway runs the length of the valley, and campgrounds are reached by short paved side roads. The Malahat section south of Mill Bay is winding but well graded, and BC Ferries operates a short crossing between Mill Bay and Brentwood Bay for travellers heading to the Saanich Peninsula.
Sites vary. Private parks generally offer full or partial hookups and laundry, while Bamberton Provincial Park has 53 vehicle-accessible sites with pit toilets, shared cold-water taps, and no hookups. Cell coverage is reliable along the highway corridor and thinner in the forested pockets west of Duncan.
Black bears, deer, and raccoons are present throughout the valley, so food and garbage should be stored inside the RV overnight. Campfire bans are common in July and August; check the BC Wildfire Service before lighting a fire.
