Beach time is the headline activity. The 225 metre long sandy beach at Bamberton Park makes it an easy stop for families, with views across the inlet to the Saanich Peninsula, the southern Gulf Islands and Mt. Baker, and mountains rising sharply to the west. Canoes and kayaks can be launched at the beach area, and the sheltered inlet around Bamberton is a solid paddling location. On the water, the waters surrounding Mill Bay draw local anglers targeting salmon and rock fish under provincial and federal fishing regulations, which require a licence. BC Ferries runs a short crossing from Mill Bay to Brentwood Bay, opening up access to Butchart Gardens and the Saanich Peninsula without a long highway drive. Closer to Sidney, SMONECTEN sits near a community trail system and gives cyclists convenient access toward Victoria.

Peak camping season runs late spring through early fall, and it books up. With only 47 reservable sites, reservations during peak season at Bamberton (May to October) are highly recommended. July and August are the driest months in the valley and the busiest for tourism, so sites at popular parks fill weeks out. Shoulder season has its own logic. June can be busy at Bamberton when nearby schools make field trips to study intertidal life on the beach. September brings quieter campgrounds, warm water still in the inlets, and cooler nights. October usually still delivers dry stretches before the wet season sets in. Winter camping is possible but limited. Bamberton runs full services from late March through the end of October, with a portion of the campground open November through late March at a winter rate and no water or firewood. Gulf Islands National Park Reserve frontcountry campgrounds, including SMONECTEN, are open every year from May 15 to September 30. Private RV parks in the area vary, so confirm dates directly.

Most provincial and national park sites in this area are rustic. The 53 RV-accessible sites at Bamberton have no water, electric or sewer connections, most are private with shade in the middle of the campground, and amenities include water collection points, pit toilets, showers at the beach area, firewood and overflow parking. SMONECTEN is RV accessible with no services, offering 43 drive-in sites and 6 bicycle-friendly walk-in sites. SMONECTEN is not appropriate for rigs over about 25 feet, sits in shaded woodland which keeps it cool in summer heat but can be tough for solar on longer stays, and is close to a busy road with some traffic noise. For hookups, dump stations and larger pull-throughs, plan on a private park. Expect coastal wildlife: eagles and osprey circling above the campground forest, and waterfowl and seals in the surrounding waters. Pets are welcome at most sites when leashed.
