Campgrounds near East Kootenay A
East Kootenay A is a rural electoral area in southeastern British Columbia that wraps around the town of Fernie in the Elk Valley. The area sits in the southern Kootenay Range of the Rocky Mountains, and campgrounds here serve as bases for the trail networks, rivers, and mountain terrain surrounding Fernie. Highway 3, the Crowsnest Highway, is the main access route, with Calgary roughly three hours to the east.
Mount Fernie Provincial Park is the closest provincial park campground, located a few kilometres from downtown Fernie along the road toward Island Lake Lodge and Fernie Alpine Resort. The park protects the Lizard Creek drainage and sits below the 2,133-metre summit of Mount Fernie. Private options include Fernie RV Resort, Mountain Shadows Campground, and Mountain View RV Park, which typically offer serviced sites suited to larger rigs.
Island Lake Provincial Recreational Area lies further up the same valley and is used mainly for day trips and hiking access rather than roadside RV camping.
Things to do near East Kootenay A
The Fernie area is best known for its mountain biking and hiking trail network. Trails run directly from Mount Fernie Provincial Park and connect out toward Island Lake Lodge and Fernie Alpine Resort, with well-known routes including the climb up to Island Lake and the flowy Lazy Lizard descent. More technical riders often head to Verboten and S-Bomb.
On the water, the Elk River is a common float in warm weather, and Lizard Creek offers walk-and-wade fly fishing suited to beginners and young anglers. A British Columbia freshwater fishing licence is required.
Downtown Fernie is a short drive or bike ride from most campgrounds and has restaurants, groceries, bike shops, and a gondola at the alpine resort for lift-served access to higher terrain.

-3° / -11°C 80 mmFreezing and snowy; provincial campground closed to vehicles
The main camping season runs late May through late September. Mount Fernie Provincial Park accepts reservations for stays between late May and the end of September, and the campground is otherwise walk-in only with no services during the off-season. Outside the reservable window, sites revert to first-come, first-served, and water taps are shut off.
July and August are the peak months, with the warmest and driest weather and the busiest campgrounds. June tends to be the wettest month of the year, so early-summer trips should plan for rain gear and cool nights. Snow can persist on higher trails into early summer, and fire bans are common in mid to late summer, so campers should check current advisories before arrival.
September brings cooler nights, thinner crowds, and easier reservations, though frost can arrive by month's end. Winter camping at the provincial park is walk-in only with no services, and most private RV parks in the valley operate seasonally.

How to book campgrounds near East Kootenay A
Mount Fernie Provincial Park is booked through the BC Parks reservation service, either online or by calling 1-800-689-9025. As of the 2026 season, BC Parks uses a three-month rolling window ahead of the arrival date, reduced from the previous four-month window, and popular summer weekends can go quickly once the window opens. About half of the sites are reservable, with the remainder held as first-come, first-served.
Private campgrounds in the Fernie area, including Fernie RV Resort, Mountain Shadows Campground, and Mountain View RV Park, are booked directly through each operator by phone or website. Serviced sites with power, water, and sewer are found at private parks, since BC Parks sites at Mount Fernie are unserviced.
What to expect near East Kootenay A
Expect forested, mountain-valley camping rather than open lakeside sites. At Mount Fernie Provincial Park, sites are vehicle-accessible and shaded by western larch, Douglas fir, cottonwood, aspen, cedar, and spruce, with a stated RV length limit around ten metres. Facilities include flush washrooms and showers, drinking water taps in season, and a dump station, but there are no electrical, water, or sewer hookups at individual sites.
This is bear country. Black bears, deer, and elk are commonly seen, so food, coolers, and scented items must be stored in a hard-sided vehicle and never left at the site. Cell service is generally usable in and around Fernie, and rail traffic passes nearby, so light sleepers may hear trains at night.
Private RV parks in the valley typically offer full or partial hookups, laundry, and Wi-Fi, at the cost of tighter spacing and less tree cover.

rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=East%20Kootenay%2C%20British%20ColumbiaDo I need a special licence to rent an RV in East Kootenay A, BC?
Good news for first-time renters: a regular Class 5 BC driver's licence (or its equivalent from your home province, state, or country) is all you need to rent an RV in East Kootenay A. No commercial licence, air-brake endorsement, or RV-specific permit is required for the Class B campervans, Class C motorhomes, and travel trailers listed on RVezy. Approved drivers are generally 25 or older, and RVezy verifies your ID securely through the platform during checkout. Visiting from overseas? Pick up an International Driving Permit from your home auto club before flying into Cranbrook or Calgary. Most renters are surprised how simple the requirements are for a Kootenay road trip.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat protection is included when I rent an RV in East Kootenay A?
You can book with confidence: every RVezy booking in East Kootenay A includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you're covered from the moment you pull out of the host's driveway. The protection plan covers most physical damage to the RV, giving you real peace of mind while you explore Fernie, the Elk Valley, or Kootenay National Park. During checkout you choose the protection level that matches your comfort, so it's your call, not the host's. Coverage details and tier inclusions are shown clearly before you confirm. Pro tip: pick a higher tier if you're tackling gravel forest service roads near Whiteswan Lake.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if my plans change? Can I cancel my East Kootenay A RV booking?
Yes, booking is low-risk: RVezy sets the cancellation policy across the platform (not individual hosts), and it includes a grace period after you book so you can lock in your dates with confidence. Refund eligibility depends on how far in advance you cancel and the specific cancellation terms shown at checkout. If a host cancels, RVezy provides a full refund or rebooking credit. Because the East Kootenays can see late-spring snow and summer wildfire smoke, this flexibility matters. Full cancellation details are on the RVezy Help Center and in your booking confirmation. Pro tip: if conditions change, message RVezy support to talk through your options.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on my East Kootenay A RV trip?
Yes, pets are welcome on the trails and in the RV. To find a pet-friendly RV rental in East Kootenay A, toggle the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy to see hosts who allow dogs (sometimes cats too). The East Kootenays are a dog-lover's paradise: leashed pups are welcome on most trails around Mount Fernie Provincial Park, along the Elk River, and at Norbury Lake Provincial Park. Kootenay National Park allows leashed pets on roadside trails and in campgrounds like Redstreak. Pro tip: pack a tie-out cable and collapsible water bowl since summer temperatures along the valley can reach the high 20s to low 30s Celsius.
parks.canada.ca/pn-np/bc/kootenay/visit/chiens-dogsCan the RV be delivered to my campsite in East Kootenay A?
Yes, and it's the easiest way to start your trip: many hosts offer RV delivery in East Kootenay A directly to your campsite, cabin, or driveway. Popular delivery destinations include Mount Fernie Provincial Park, Wasa Lake Provincial Park, Premier Lake Provincial Park, and Kikomun Creek Provincial Park near Lake Koocanusa, plus private spots like Fairmont Hot Springs Resort. The host arrives, levels the RV, hooks up power and water if available, and walks you through everything from the propane stove to the awning. This is gold if it's your first time renting an RV. Use the Delivery filter on RVezy, then message the host to confirm the fee, which is usually based on distance from their home base.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=East%20Kootenay%2C%20British%20ColumbiaHow far can I drive on my East Kootenay A RV rental?
You have plenty of range for a great road trip: most East Kootenay A hosts include a daily kilometre allowance (commonly 100 to 200 km per day), and some offer an RV rental with unlimited mileage, perfect for longer Kootenay loops. From the East Kootenay A area near Elkford and the Elk Valley, popular drives include Fernie (about 60 km south), Cranbrook (about 150 km southwest), Radium Hot Springs (about 230 km north via Highway 93/95), and Banff, Alberta (about 290 km via the Crowsnest Pass and Highway 22). Going beyond your allowance adds a per-kilometre fee. Pro tip: ask the host upfront and consider an unlimited-mileage listing if you plan to loop through Banff and Jasper.
drivebc.ca/What are the best campgrounds near East Kootenay A, BC?
You're spoiled for choice. Some of the best campgrounds near East Kootenay A include Mount Fernie Provincial Park (forested sites minutes from downtown Fernie and world-class mountain biking), Wasa Lake Provincial Park (one of the warmest swimming lakes in the Kootenays), Premier Lake Provincial Park (a top fishing destination with a beach and dock), Norbury Lake Provincial Park near Cranbrook (stunning Steeples Range views), and Kikomun Creek Provincial Park (169 sites near Lake Koocanusa with painted turtles and sandy beaches). For full hookups, Fairmont Hot Springs RV Resort is a favourite. Pro tip: BC Parks fill up fast for July and August, so reserve as soon as the four-month booking window opens.
bcparks.ca/wasa-lake-park/When is the best time to take an RV trip in East Kootenay A?
The sweet spot is mid-June to mid-September, when daytime highs in the Elk Valley sit around 22 to 28°C and most BC Parks campgrounds are fully open. July and August are warmest and busiest, perfect for swimming at Wasa Lake or Lake Koocanusa. September brings fewer crowds, golden larches, and crisp nights ideal for campfires. May and early October are cooler shoulder seasons with lower nightly rates, though some higher-elevation campgrounds like Whiteswan Lake may still have snow. Winter RV camping in East Kootenay A is possible for ski trips to Fernie Alpine Resort, but you'll want a four-season RV with heated tanks. Pro tip: late August often has the clearest skies after summer wildfire season peaks.
climate.weather.gc.ca/climate_normals/index_e.htmlI've never rented an RV before. Will I be okay driving in East Kootenay A?
You've got this, and you're not on your own. Every RVezy host gives you a full walkthrough at pickup covering driving, leveling, propane, the water system, and dumping, so first-time renters in East Kootenay A leave feeling confident. Highways in this region are well-maintained two-lane routes like Highway 3 through the Crowsnest Pass and Highway 93/95 up the Columbia Valley, with wide shoulders and plenty of pullouts for photos. If mountain driving feels intimidating, choose a smaller Class B campervan or Class C motorhome under 25 feet, easy to handle on switchbacks near Sinclair Pass. Pro tip: message your host with questions before booking; they're locals who know exactly which roads to enjoy and which to skip.
www2.gov.bc.ca/gov/content/transportation/driving-and-cycling/traveller-information/seasonal/winter-drivingWhat happens if something goes wrong with the RV on my trip?
You're never stranded: every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, covering common issues like flat tires, lockouts, dead batteries, towing, and mechanical breakdowns. If you have an issue near Sparwood, Elkford, or along Highway 3, one call gets help dispatched. Your host is also a phone call away to troubleshoot quirks like the awning or furnace, often the fastest fix. RVezy's support team is available around the clock before, during, and after your trip. Pro tip: cell service can be spotty between Elko and remote forest service roads, so screenshot the roadside assistance number and your host's contact before you leave town.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take an East Kootenay A RV rental into Alberta or the United States?
Cross-border trips are often allowed, and the East Kootenays are a perfect launchpad. From East Kootenay A you're only about 60 km from the Alberta border via the Crowsnest Pass and roughly 100 km from the Roosville border crossing into Montana. Many hosts welcome trips to Banff, Jasper, Waterton Lakes, or Glacier National Park, but you must confirm with the host before booking and let them update the insurance accordingly. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals. Always carry your passport, the RVezy trip agreement, and proof of insurance for border officers. Pro tip: a Banff-Jasper-Yoho-Kootenay national parks loop from East Kootenay A is one of Canada's bucket-list RV road trips.
cbsa-asfc.gc.ca/travel-voyage/menu-eng.htmlHow much should I budget for fuel on an East Kootenay A RV trip?
Fuel is the biggest variable in your trip budget, but it's predictable once you know the numbers. Class B campervans in this area average 18 to 22 L/100km, Class C motorhomes 22 to 28 L/100km, and larger Class A rigs around 30 L/100km. Gas prices in Cranbrook, Fernie, and Sparwood tend to run a few cents below the BC average, while remote stations like Yahk or Canal Flats can be higher, so fill up in town. A 500 km loop from East Kootenay A through Fernie, Cranbrook, and Kimberley in a Class C burns roughly 110 to 140 litres. Pro tip: GasBuddy and the Petro-Canada app are gold for finding the cheapest pumps along Highway 3 and Highway 93/95.
www2.gov.bc.ca/gov/content/industry/natural-gas-oil/petroleum-natural-gas-pricingHow far ahead should I book campgrounds for my East Kootenay A RV trip?
Earlier is better, especially for summer. BC Parks opens reservations on a rolling four-month window, and popular East Kootenay parks like Wasa Lake, Premier Lake, Kikomun Creek, and Mount Fernie fill within minutes of opening for July and August weekends. Kootenay National Park sites at Redstreak and McLeod Meadows open through the Parks Canada Reservation Service in mid-January. For private RV parks like Fairmont Hot Springs Resort or Fernie RV Resort, aim three to six months ahead for peak dates. Pro tip: set a calendar reminder for 7:00 a.m. PT on the day your dates open, and have a backup park selected in case your first choice sells out.
bcparks.ca/reservations/What are driving conditions like in East Kootenay A?
Driving in East Kootenay A is generally relaxed and scenic: think two-lane mountain highways, light traffic compared to coastal BC, and jaw-dropping views of the Rockies and Purcells. Highway 3 (Crowsnest), Highway 93, and Highway 95 are the main arteries, all paved and well signed. Watch for wildlife (elk, deer, and bighorn sheep especially at dawn and dusk near Elko and Radium), occasional gravel sections on forest service roads, and quick afternoon thunderstorms in July. From October to April, BC law requires winter tires or chains on most Kootenay highways. Pro tip: check DriveBC before you head out for real-time updates on closures, wildfires, or rockfall on the Kootenay Pass.
drivebc.ca/What amenities will I find at campgrounds in East Kootenay A?
You'll find a great mix. Provincial parks like Wasa Lake, Premier Lake, and Mount Fernie typically offer pit or flush toilets, potable water taps, fire pits, picnic tables, and sani-dump stations, but most sites are unserviced (no power, water, or sewer hookups). For full hookups, head to private parks like Fernie RV Resort, Fairmont Hot Springs RV Resort, or Kimberley Riverside Campground, which offer 30/50-amp power, water, sewer, Wi-Fi, showers, and laundry. Potable water and dump stations are available at most BC Parks campgrounds and at municipal stations in Cranbrook, Fernie, and Invermere. Pro tip: download a sani-dump locator app so you always know where to empty tanks during your East Kootenay RV trip.
bcparks.ca/What's inside the RVs available for rent in East Kootenay A?
More comforts than most people expect. A typical motorhome rental in East Kootenay A includes sleeping for 4 to 8 people, a full kitchen (fridge, stove, microwave, sink), a bathroom with shower and toilet, a dinette, heating and air conditioning, fresh and waste water tanks, and seatbelted travel seats. Many listings add bonuses like a generator for boondocking near Whiteswan Lake, an outdoor shower for muddy mountain-bike days in Fernie, a TV with streaming, a Wi-Fi booster, BBQs, bikes, kayaks, and camp chairs. Each listing shows photos and a full amenity list. Pro tip: planning a family RV trip in East Kootenay A? Filter by sleeps count and look for bunk-style layouts that keep kids comfortable on longer drives.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=East%20Kootenay%2C%20British%20ColumbiaWhat add-ons and pickup options should I know about for my East Kootenay A campervan rental?
Hosts make it easy to customize. Popular add-ons for a campervan rental in East Kootenay A include linen and bedding kits, kitchen packages, bike racks (a must for Fernie's trails), generators, propane firepits, paddleboards, and even pre-stocked pantries. Most hosts include a set daily kilometre allowance with an extra-km fee beyond that, and many provide a few free generator hours per day. Pickup is usually at the host's home base near Elkford, Sparwood, Fernie, or Cranbrook, with delivery to local campgrounds like Mount Fernie or Wasa Lake available for a flat fee. Pro tip: bundle bedding, a camp chair package, and a bike rack at booking; it costs less than building your own kit last minute in Cranbrook.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=East%20Kootenay%2C%20British%20ColumbiaHow does payment and the security deposit work for an RV rental in East Kootenay A?
Payment is simple and secure: you pay through the RVezy platform with a credit card, never directly to the host, which protects both sides. At booking you're charged for your trip, and a refundable security deposit is pre-authorized (held, not charged) on your card a few days before pickup. Deposit amounts vary by RV class and value and are shown on the listing before you confirm. After drop-off, if the RV comes back clean, undamaged, with the right fuel level, and within your kilometre allowance, the hold is released, usually within a few days. Pro tip: photograph the RV inside and out at pickup and return so there's a clear record, the fastest path to a smooth deposit release.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksWhat are the best road trips from East Kootenay A?
You're sitting at the gateway to some of Canada's best RV routes. Top road trips from East Kootenay A include: the Powder Highway loop through Fernie, Kimberley, and Panorama (about 350 km of skiing or summer riding); the Columbia Valley run up Highway 93/95 to Radium Hot Springs and Invermere (about 230 km north); the national parks circle through Kootenay, Banff, Yoho, and Jasper (a 5-to-7-day classic); and a southern loop across the Crowsnest Pass into Waterton Lakes and Alberta's Castle Provincial Park (about 200 km). For a shorter family RV trip in East Kootenay A, drive 60 km south to Fernie for hiking, swimming holes on the Elk River, and the Fernie Brewing Co. tasting room. Pro tip: book Radium and Banff campgrounds first since they fill the fastest.
