Campgrounds and RV parks near East Kootenay B, BC

Water recreation drives summer trips. Surveyors Lake within Kikomun Creek Park allows canoeing and kayaking, and the park has kayaks, stand-up paddle boards, and pedal boat rentals available on site. Smallmouth bass and rainbow trout can be found in Surveyors Lake, while Lake Koocanusa supports powerboating, house boating, and Kokanee fishing. On land, the Fernie area is a mountain-biking hub. A network of trails spans outwards from Mount Fernie Provincial Park, and the climb to Island Lake Lodge followed by the downhill descent on Lazy Lizard is popular with families. Lizard Creek, a tributary of the Elk River, has narrow channels and small pools that create walk-and-wade fly-fishing options for beginners and young anglers.

The peak camping window runs from late May through September. Mount Fernie Provincial Park is open for reservable stays between May 30 and September 30, and the campsite is closed in winter, though walk-in access continues with no services. Kikomun Creek is reservable within a similar window and follows the same 4-month rolling booking system used across BC Parks. Spring brings high water on the Elk River, muddy singletrack, and cold nights, but campgrounds around Lake Koocanusa open earlier because of the drier, warmer climate on the reservoir. Kikomun Creek Provincial Park is located in a dry sunny area of the province, preserving Interior Douglas fir and Ponderosa pine forest and grassland habitat, which makes it a reliable early-season choice. Late summer is warm and dry, with elevated wildfire risk. Campers should check BC Parks and BC Wildfire Service advisories before departure, as campfire bans are common in July and August. Fall offers cooler nights, fewer bugs, and quieter sites, and Fernie RV Resort is open year-round for shoulder-season and winter travellers heading to the ski hill.

Provincial park sites are forested and generally without full hookups. There are no hookup options for RVs at Surveyors Campground within Kikomun Creek, and the RV length limit is 32 ft (10 m), though larger rigs can call ahead to check availability. Roads inside the parks are paved but narrow, and site pads vary in length and levelness. For full services, Fernie RV Resort offers 161 fully serviced RV sites, 11 tent sites, 5 heated yurts and 10 luxury RVs, with hot showers, private family bathrooms, and 30 and 50 amp power, water, sewer and wi-fi included at every site. Wildlife is active across the region. Black bear, deer, and elk are commonly seen in these parts, so campers should stay wildsafe by using bear-proof storage, keeping food inside the RV, and cleaning grills after use.
