Campgrounds and RV parks near Fairwinds, BC

The signature draw is the tidal beach at Rathtrevor Beach Provincial Park, where at low tide the ocean recedes almost a kilometre, visitors of all ages can play in the sand and explore the shoreline, and when the tide rolls back in over sunbaked sand, the warmed water is perfect for swimming. The park also has over 5.5 km of hiking trails that meander along the beach and through mature forests. Birdwatching is a strong draw in shoulder season. In spring, large numbers of seabirds congregate for the annual herring spawn, and from February to April Rathtrevor Beach is one of Vancouver Island's best spots for viewing migrating Brant geese. At Brannen Lake RV Park and Campsite, clean washrooms, coin-operated hot showers and laundry facilities, Wi-Fi, and a well-stocked convenience store are on site, with over 120 large sites varying from private and wooded to grassy and sunny, plus lake swimming and a boat launch.

The mid-island coast has a mild maritime climate with a distinct wet season. The rainy season in the Nanoose Bay area runs through January, February, March, October, November and December, with November the wettest month. July is the driest month, averaging around 45 mm of precipitation, and summers are comparatively dry and pleasant. Peak camping season runs roughly from late June through early September, when families and beach visitors fill oceanfront parks. Rathtrevor Beach is a very popular camping destination year-round, and reservations are required during the summer. Booking windows for BC Parks open several months ahead of arrival, and the most popular loops sell out quickly for weekends and holidays. Shoulder seasons offer quieter sites and good wildlife viewing, though rain and cool nights are common. Rathtrevor is open and operational year-round, with a winter fee in effect from late October to mid-March and no services during that period, while several private parks operate on a shorter season. Brannen Lake RV Park and Campsite lists camping open dates of May 1 to October 13, so winter travellers should confirm operating dates directly.

Expect a mix of forested and open sites within a short drive of the ocean. All campsites at Rathtrevor are within a five-minute walk of the beach, which stretches for 2 km, and short trails link the loops to the shore. Rathtrevor sites do not have electrical hookups, so RV travellers should arrive with tanks filled and batteries charged. Other amenities include shower buildings, flush bathrooms in the day-use area and a sani-station. Private parks in the Nanaimo and Parksville corridor typically offer full or partial hookups, laundry, showers, Wi-Fi, and family amenities such as playgrounds and swim beaches. Cell coverage is generally good along the Highway 19 and 19A corridor. Pets are welcome at most parks on leash, with restrictions in wildlife-sensitive areas at Rathtrevor during the spring Brant goose migration. Fire bans are common in late summer and should be checked before arrival.
