Camping near New Songhees 1A
New Songhees 1A sits on the west side of Victoria Harbour on southern Vancouver Island, directly across the water from downtown Victoria. The location puts RV travellers within a short drive of both urban attractions and coastal parkland, with easy access to the Trans-Canada Highway heading north up the Island.
Campground options in the area range from full-service private RV resorts to a large provincial park. Salish Seaside RV Haven is a waterfront resort on a private peninsula in the harbour, owned and operated by the Songhees and Esquimalt First Nations, with concrete pads and full hookups suited to larger motorhomes. Fort Victoria RV Park and Campground is another full-service option close to downtown. Oceanside RV Resort and Weir's Beach RV Resort sit farther out along the southern coastline.
For a forested provincial-park experience, Goldstream Provincial Park lies roughly 16 kilometres northwest of downtown Victoria on Highway 1, with vehicle-accessible sites in a Douglas fir forest along the Goldstream River.
Things to do near New Songhees 1A
From a harbour-side base like Salish Seaside RV Haven, downtown Victoria is reachable on foot via the Songhees Walkway or by harbour ferry across the water. Visitors can pair urban stops such as the Inner Harbour, museums, and shops with waterfront activities like kayaking or paddleboarding directly from the marina.
Goldstream Provincial Park has about 16 kilometres of hiking trails, ranging from wheelchair-accessible loops to the steep Mount Finlayson summit climb. The park is best known for its chum salmon run between mid-October and early December, which draws thousands of visitors and bald eagles to the Goldstream River estuary. Waterfalls in the park include Niagara Falls and the smaller Goldstream Falls near the campground.

Southern Vancouver Island has a mild marine climate, with wet, cool winters and dry, warm summers. Peak RV season runs June through early September, when private resorts book out and Goldstream's frontcountry sites are on full-service rates. Weekends around Canada Day, BC Day, and Labour Day fill earliest, so reservations should be secured well in advance.
Shoulder seasons in May and September tend to be the sweet spot for RV travellers: temperatures are comfortable, rainfall is manageable, and availability is easier. Late spring brings wildflowers to Goldstream's Garry oak and arbutus stands, while September still delivers many dry, sunny days.
Goldstream Provincial Park is open year-round, but facilities are limited from roughly November through March. Hot showers, the interpretive nature house, and full sani-station service are unavailable in winter, and a reduced winter fee applies for self-sufficient campers. The salmon run in late fall is a major seasonal draw, though rain and short daylight hours require rain gear and warm layers.

Our second time renting with Stanislav. Very responsive, flexible. RV is clean, well equipped, easy driving. Great!

We went on our first RV trip as a family and had a fantastic time. The host was communicative and the RV was clean and worked really well. We will for sure rent again.

This was our second year renting with Mark! He is great to deal with and quick to respond. The trailer is well stocked with cooking supplies, and dishes for 4 people. Bed is comfortable and trailer is clean. We camped as 2 adults and 1 dog and it was the perfect size. We did dry camping (no power hook ups) and loved that the trailer had solar power and ran on propane so we could use the stove & fridge/freezer and charge our devices (and heat for those chilly fall nights on the ocean). Would definitely rent again! He was also flexible on the pick up and drop off time which was great as I ran a bit later than planned on delivery day.
Sarah K. - Sep 2026
Great communication, everything on-time and as expected. Mark and his trailer are both lovely.

How to book campgrounds near New Songhees 1A
Goldstream Provincial Park reservations are handled through the BC Parks reservation service. For the 2026 season, frontcountry sites can be booked on a three-month rolling window in advance of arrival, while group sites can be booked up to one year ahead. When reservations are not available, some sites function as first-come, first-served, and mid-week arrivals right after the 11 a.m. check-out have the best chance of scoring a spot in peak season.
Private RV parks including Salish Seaside RV Haven, Fort Victoria RV Park and Campground, Oceanside RV Resort, and Weir's Beach RV Resort book directly through each operator's website. Waterfront pads at Salish Seaside are limited and fill quickly in summer, so early booking is essential.
What to expect near New Songhees 1A
Private resorts closer to the harbour are urban in character: paved roads, concrete pads, full hookups with 30 and 50 amp power, water, sewer, Wi-Fi, and modern washroom buildings. Salish Seaside RV Haven does not permit wood campfires; propane fire pits are available for rent at the office, and tenting and canopy structures are not allowed. Quiet-hour policies are enforced.
Goldstream is a forested provincial-park experience with a shower building, flush toilets, a seasonal sani-station, and an amphitheatre, but no hookups at individual sites. Maximum length of stay in any BC provincial park is 14 nights per calendar year. Black bears are active in the area, so food must be locked in vehicles overnight and garbage secured. Pets must be leashed.

bcparks.ca/reserve/pets/Can the RV be delivered to me instead of picking it up?
Yes, RV delivery New Songhees 1A is one of the most popular options on RVezy, especially if you're flying into Victoria International Airport (YYJ) or arriving by BC Ferries at Swartz Bay. Many hosts will drive the motorhome straight to your campground, hotel parking lot or even a private driveway in Esquimalt, View Royal or Langford, then level it, hook up power and water, and walk you through every system before handing over the keys. This is a game-changer for anyone renting an RV for the first time who doesn't want to drive a 28-foot rig through downtown Victoria traffic. Pro tip: filter by 'Delivery' on the listing page and ask the host for a quote to Goldstream, Fort Victoria RV Park or Pedder Bay for the smoothest start.

bcparks.ca/reserve/When is the best time of year for an RV trip from New Songhees 1A?
Lucky you, the Victoria region has the mildest climate in Canada, so the RV season here is genuinely long. Peak conditions run mid-May through late September, with daytime highs of 18 to 24°C and very little rain, perfect for RV camping New Songhees 1A and ferry-hopping to the Gulf Islands. Shoulder months (April, early May, and October) bring 12 to 16°C, cherry blossoms or fall colour at Goldstream, and significantly lower nightly rates. Winters are wet but rarely below freezing (3 to 8°C), so a New Songhees 1A RV trip is doable year-round if your rig has a furnace. Pro tip: book July and August at least three months in advance, ferry-served campgrounds fill up fast on Vancouver Island.
climate.weather.gc.ca/climate_normals/results_1991_2020_e.html?searchType=stnName&txtStationName=victoriaI've never rented an RV before, will I actually know what to do?
Yes, first time renting an RV through RVezy is way easier than people expect. Every host gives you a hands-on walkthrough at pickup, showing you how to operate the propane, slide-outs, awning, water pump, generator and waste tanks. You can message them anytime through the app during your trip if you forget which switch does what at 9 pm at Goldstream. Many New Songhees 1A area hosts also include written cheat sheets and short video links. Choose a smaller Class B campervan or Class C motorhome (20 to 25 feet) for your first run, they handle just like a large pickup. Pro tip: arrive 30 minutes early for your walkthrough and take phone videos of each step, you'll thank yourself at your first campsite.
tc.gc.ca/en/services/road.htmlWhat happens if the RV breaks down during my trip?
You are never on your own. Every RVezy booking from New Songhees 1A includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, so help is one phone call away whether you are stuck with a flat on the Malahat, a dead battery at French Beach Provincial Park, or a propane question at Sooke River Campground. The roadside team can dispatch tire service, jump-starts, lockout help, and towing across Vancouver Island. Your host is typically a quick text away for RV-specific questions, and RVezy's customer support team is available before, during and after your trip. Save the roadside number in your phone before you leave the host's driveway.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my New Songhees 1A RV rental to the United States or off Vancouver Island?
Often yes, with the right prep. Many hosts permit cross-border travel to Washington State (a quick Coho ferry from downtown Victoria to Port Angeles, then on to Olympic National Park or the San Juans) and onto BC Ferries to the mainland, Salt Spring Island or Galiano. You must confirm cross-border permission with your host before booking and check that your chosen protection package covers US travel. Travel to Mexico is not permitted on any RVezy rental. Bring your passport, vehicle registration and a host authorization letter for any border crossing. Pro tip: popular routes include Victoria to Vancouver via Tsawwassen (3.5 hours total), Victoria to Tofino (4.5 hours), and Victoria to Port Angeles plus Hurricane Ridge (3 hours including the ferry).
cbsa-asfc.gc.ca/travel-voyage/menu-eng.htmlHow much should I budget for fuel on a Vancouver Island RV trip?
Easier than you think to estimate. Gas prices around New Songhees 1A typically run $1.75 to $2.05 per litre, and most Class C motorhomes get 18 to 22 litres per 100 km, while Class B campervans sip closer to 12 to 15 litres per 100 km. For a 4-day, 600 km loop covering Victoria, Sooke, the Cowichan Valley and back, expect roughly $200 to $280 in fuel for a mid-size Class C. Diesel rigs and smaller travel trailers pull less. Pro tip: fill up in Langford or Colwood before heading west toward Port Renfrew, prices on the Pacific Marine Circle Route climb noticeably once you're past Sooke, and there are very few stations between Port Renfrew and Lake Cowichan.
www2.gov.bc.ca/gov/content/industry/natural-gas-oil/petroleum-price-dataHow far ahead should I book campgrounds near New Songhees 1A?
The earlier the better, especially for the summer sweet spot. BC Parks releases reservations through the Discover Camping system exactly four months ahead at 7 am Pacific Time, and popular spots like Goldstream, French Beach and Bamberton Provincial Park fill within minutes for July and August weekends. Parks Canada's SMONEĆTEN (McDonald) Campground near Swartz Bay opens reservations in January for the coming season. Private parks like Fort Victoria RV Park, Pedder Bay and Salish Seaside take bookings up to a year out and are essential to lock in for long weekends. Pro tip: build your itinerary backwards from your hardest-to-book night, set a calendar alert for the four-month BC Parks window, and have your RV's length and slide-out details ready when you book.
bcparks.ca/reserve/What's it like driving an RV around Victoria and New Songhees 1A?
Genuinely manageable, even for first-timers. The roads around New Songhees 1A are well-paved, signed in English, and traffic is mild compared to Vancouver. The main thing to watch is the Malahat section of Highway 1 north of Goldstream, a winding mountain stretch with steep grades where you should stay in the right lane and use lower gears on descents. Avoid driving large Class A motorhomes through downtown Victoria's narrow heritage streets and the low-clearance areas near the Inner Harbour, stick to Douglas Street, Blanshard or the Trans-Canada. Wet pavement is the most common hazard from November to March. Pro tip: if city driving makes you nervous, book a host who offers delivery so the RV starts its trip at your campsite, not on Government Street.
drivebc.ca/What facilities will I find at campgrounds near New Songhees 1A?
You'll find a great range. Private parks like Fort Victoria RV Park and Pedder Bay RV Resort offer full hookups (30/50-amp power, water and sewer), Wi-Fi, laundry, hot showers, and on-site dump stations, which is ideal for larger rigs. BC Parks sites such as Goldstream and French Beach typically provide a mix of partial-hookup and unserviced sites with flush toilets, hot showers, fire rings and picnic tables, plus a sani-station for dumping tanks (currently around $5 to $10). Potable water fills are available at every reserved-campground gatehouse. Pro tip: top up fresh water and dump grey/black tanks before leaving any park, the closest public dump stations heading west are at Goldstream and Sooke, and they get busy on Sunday afternoons in summer.
bcparks.ca/goldstream/What is actually included inside a typical RV rental from New Songhees 1A?
More than you'd guess. A typical motorhome rental New Songhees 1A comes fully equipped for life on the road: real beds with linens (often a queen plus bunks or a convertible dinette), a kitchen with a propane stove, fridge/freezer, microwave, sink and basic cookware, a bathroom with toilet and shower, furnace and air conditioning, and seatbelted seating for the number the RV sleeps. Many rigs include a TV, Wi-Fi boosters or a generator, and outdoor extras like an awning, camp chairs and a propane BBQ are common. Class B campervans are more compact but still include a bed, fridge and small kitchen. Check each listing's amenity list and message the host to confirm linens, dishes and any add-on fees before booking.
rvezy.com/What add-ons and policies should I look for when booking?
A few smart picks make every trip smoother. The most popular add-ons for a New Songhees 1A RV rental are unlimited kilometres (great for Tofino runs), delivery and setup (huge for first-timers), generator hours, bike racks, kayak or paddleboard add-ons for Elk Lake or Sooke Harbour, propane top-ups, and outdoor BBQ kits. Standard pickup is at the host's location near Esquimalt, View Royal or Saanich, usually between 1 and 4 pm, with drop-off by 11 am, but many hosts will accommodate ferry or flight times if you ask. Mileage policies range from 100 km per day included up to unlimited. Bundle delivery plus a generator add-on if you're heading to an unserviced site like Jordan River.
rvezy.com/How does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Simple and secure. You pay for your New Songhees 1A RV rental directly through the RVezy platform with a credit card, never in cash to the host, which protects both of you. A refundable security deposit is pre-authorized on your card before pickup, not charged unless there is damage or a clear policy breach like excess cleaning or a missing propane tank. Once you return the RV in good shape, the hold is released. Take a walk-around video at both pickup and drop-off with the host present, note the fuel and propane levels, and dump the tanks before returning to avoid any extra fees.
