qathet C camping overview
qathet C refers to the qathet Regional District on the upper Sunshine Coast of British Columbia, centred on the City of Powell River about 140 km north of Vancouver by road and ferry. The district sits on the traditional territory of the Tla'amin Nation, between the Georgia Strait and the mountains of the mainland. Road access from the south requires two BC Ferries sailings, which keeps the area quieter than the lower Sunshine Coast.
RV travellers have a mix of private oceanside resorts, a municipal beachfront campsite, a regional park on Powell Lake, and a provincial park campground to choose from. Seabreeze Resorts and Garnet Rock Oceanside Resort face the strait, Willingdon Beach Campsite sits inside the City of Powell River, Haywire Bay Regional Park lies on Powell Lake about 7 km from town, and Mermaid Cove at Saltery Bay Provincial Park is about 27 km south near the Saltery Bay ferry terminal.
The area is a launch point for the Sunshine Coast Trail, the Powell Forest Canoe Route, and well-known scuba diving sites, so most trips combine campground time with day trips.
Things to do near qathet C
The Sunshine Coast Trail runs 180 km from Sarah Point in Desolation Sound to Saltery Bay and is the longest hut-to-hut hiking trail in Canada, with more than a dozen free-use huts and many access points for day hikes. Paddlers can tackle the Powell Forest Canoe Route, a multi-lake circuit with several portages, or stay closer to camp on Powell Lake from Haywire Bay Regional Park, which has a boat launch.
Scuba diving is a signature draw. Mermaid Cove at Saltery Bay Provincial Park holds the Emerald Princess, a three-metre bronze mermaid statue set in about 20 metres of water, with an accessible dive ramp on shore.
Families also fill days with tidepooling on rocky shorelines, salmon and bottom fishing in Jervis Inlet and the Strait, mountain biking on local trails, and rock climbing in the Eldred Valley north of town.

The main RV season runs from late May through mid-September, matching the operating window at most campgrounds in the area. Saltery Bay Provincial Park is technically open year round, with fees and full services in effect from about mid-May to mid-September, and 21 of its 42 sites reservable through the BC Parks system while the rest are first-come, first-served. Haywire Bay Regional Park operates seasonally on Powell Lake, and the City of Powell River runs Willingdon Beach Campsite year round with summer rates from May through September.
July and August bring the warmest, driest weather and the busiest campgrounds. Oceanfront resorts and the provincial park fill weeks ahead for weekends, and ferry sailings from Earls Cove to Saltery Bay can back up on Friday afternoons and Sunday evenings.
Shoulder months of May, June, and September offer easier bookings and cooler nights. Late fall through winter is very wet, with November averaging around 270 to 280 mm of rain, and many private campgrounds and the regional park close for the season.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ We had such a great experience renting from them! Our trip was a very last-minute plan, and they were incredibly accommodating and easy to work with. Communication was excellent from start to finish, and they made the whole process smooth and stress-free. The trailer was exactly what we needed, and we really appreciated how helpful they were in making everything come together on short notice. We wouldn't hesitate to rent from them again. Highly recommend!
Salina M. - Jul 2026
Great hosts. Friendly and responsive. Trailer was exactly as described and had everything we needed for our 5 night stay. The king bed was comfy, my kids complained a bit about the bunk mattresses, they were a little thin.

How to book campgrounds near qathet C
Mermaid Cove at Saltery Bay Provincial Park is booked through the BC Parks reservation system, which opens a rolling booking window several months ahead of arrival. Only 21 of the 42 sites are reservable; the rest are held for walk-ins, so arriving mid-week improves the odds of a first-come site.
Haywire Bay Regional Park is operated by the qathet Regional District. Individual sites there are first-come, first-served and paid at the self-registration station, while the two group sites and cabin can be pre-booked up to a year ahead through the park caretaker. Willingdon Beach Campsite is run by the City of Powell River and takes reservations directly, with pre-payment required.
Private resorts including Seabreeze Resorts and Garnet Rock Oceanside Resort book through their own websites or by phone. For peak summer weekends, plan to lock in sites weeks out, and reserve the Earls Cove ferry sailing at the same time.
What to expect at qathet C campgrounds
Getting in takes planning. Travellers from Vancouver typically ride two BC Ferries sailings, Horseshoe Bay to Langdale and Earls Cove to Saltery Bay, with a total trip of about four to five hours if connections line up. Highway 101 is well maintained and manageable for larger rigs, but back-in sites are the norm at Mermaid Cove and most sites there fit rigs up to about 32 feet.
Hookup levels vary widely. Willingdon Beach offers a mix of full-hookup, electric and water, and unserviced sites with laundry, showers, and playgrounds. Mermaid Cove has pit toilets, potable water spigots, and a sani-station, with no power or sewer at sites. Haywire Bay has drive-in and water-access sites on Powell Lake with showers and a boat launch.
Expect shaded, forested sites under Douglas fir and cedar, cool evenings even in July, and rocky rather than sandy shorelines at most oceanfront locations.

How much does it cost to rent an RV in qathet, BC?
RV rental in qathet, BC is surprisingly affordable for such a remote slice of coastline. Most travel trailers and campervans on RVezy range from about CAD $90 to $200 per night, while larger Class A and Class C motorhomes typically run $180 to $325 per night, with seasonal pricing peaking in July and August. To find a cheap RV rental in qathet, book midweek, travel in May, June, September or October when ferry traffic eases, and filter for hosts who offer free kilometres or include essential kits. Pro tip: many qathet hosts bundle in BC Ferries-friendly extras like leveling blocks and tie-downs, which saves you a separate trip to the hardware store before catching the Saltery Bay sailing.
sunshinecoastcanada.com/plan-your-trip/getting-here/What licence do I need to rent an RV in qathet?

No special RV endorsement or commercial licence is required for the motorhomes and travel trailers listed on RVezy. Approved renters are generally 25 or older, and ID verification is handled quickly inside the RVezy platform during booking. Visiting from abroad? help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsIs my qathet RV rental protected if something goes wrong?
Yes, every motorhome rental in qathet booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can cross Jervis Inlet and explore Desolation Sound with peace of mind. You choose your coverage level at checkout (not the host), picking the plan that matches your comfort, and the protection helps cover eligible damage to the RV during your trip. Roadside support is included if you get a flat, a dead battery, or a lockout on Highway 101 north of Powell River. Pro tip: snap photos of the RV at pickup and drop-off, including the roof and awning, so any small dings from Sunshine Coast Trail trailhead parking lots are clearly documented.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat happens if I need to cancel my qathet RV trip?
Booking is low-risk: RVezy sets a clear, standardized cancellation policy on every reservation (hosts don't set this themselves), and the exact refund terms are shown at checkout before you pay. Refund amounts depend on how far out your trip is from the cancellation date. If a host ever cancels on you, RVezy refunds the guest or provides travel credits so your qathet RV trip stays on track. Pro tip: BC Ferries between Earls Cove and Saltery Bay is non-bookable and weather-dependent, so build a buffer day into your itinerary in case the Jervis Inlet sailing runs late.

Absolutely, plenty of hosts offer pet-friendly RV rental in qathet, BC, just tick the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy and message the host to confirm any size or breed details. Your dog will love it here: Willingdon Beach in Powell River has off-leash areas and forest trails, the Sunshine Coast Trail welcomes leashed dogs along its full 180 km, and Haywire Bay Regional Park on Powell Lake allows pets on leash throughout the campground. Even BC Ferries between Earls Cove and Saltery Bay welcomes pets (they stay on the vehicle deck or designated outdoor areas). Pro tip: pack a towel, your pup will want to swim at Mowat Bay after every hike.
bcparks.ca/visit-a-park/pets-in-parks/Can the RV be delivered to my campsite in qathet?
Yes, RV delivery in qathet is one of the smartest ways to start your trip, especially if you're flying into YVR or YQQ and don't want to drive a motorhome onto the BC Ferries. Many local hosts will deliver to Willingdon Beach Campsite, Haywire Bay Regional Park, Shelter Point on Texada Island, or even your private cabin driveway in Lund or Saltery Bay. They'll level the RV, hook up water and power if available, and walk you through every system before handing over the keys. Filter for Delivery on RVezy, message the host with your destination, and confirm the delivery fee upfront, it's typically priced per kilometre from their home base.
qathet.ca/services/parks-and-recreation/regional-parks-campgrounds/How does mileage work, and how far can I drive on a qathet RV trip?
Most hosts include a daily kilometre allowance (commonly 150 to 200 km per day) with extra kilometres priced around $0.30 to $0.50, and a few offer RV rental with unlimited mileage, perfect for a longer Sunshine Coast loop. Real distances from Powell River: 34 km to Saltery Bay ferry, 28 km north to Lund at the end of Highway 101, 25 km to Haywire Bay, and roughly 175 km (plus two ferries) to Vancouver via Earls Cove and Horseshoe Bay. If you're planning the full Vancouver Island and Sunshine Coast circle, ask hosts about unlimited kilometres upfront. Pro tip: ferry travel doesn't burn kilometres, so the route stretches further than it looks on the map.

You'll do great, qathet is one of the gentlest places in BC to learn. Highway 101 between Saltery Bay and Lund is paved, well-maintained and almost completely flat compared to the Coquihalla or Sea-to-Sky, with light traffic outside the ferry rush. Your host will give you a full walkthrough at pickup covering propane, water, awning, and dumping, and you can call or text them any time during your trip. If you're nervous about the BC Ferries deck, ask for a smaller Class B campervan or travel trailer for your first qathet RV rental, they fit easily and load quickly at Saltery Bay. Pro tip: practice in the host's driveway before you roll out.
icbc.com/road-safety/sharing/Pages/sharing-the-road-with-rvs-and-trailers.aspxWhat if my RV breaks down between Powell River and Lund?
You're never alone on the road. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, covering issues like flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, and towing whether you're parked near the Saltery Bay ferry terminal or up at Okeover Arm Provincial Park. Cell service is reliable along Highway 101 through Powell River, Westview, Cranberry, and Townsite, with some patchy spots between Stillwater and Saltery Bay. One call to RVezy gets help dispatched, and your host is a great second call for RV-specific quirks like the furnace or slide-out. Pro tip: screenshot the RVezy support number and your host's contact info before you board the ferry, just in case you hit a dead zone in Jervis Inlet.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat are popular RV road trip routes from qathet?
An RV road trip from qathet opens up some of BC's most scenic coastline. Top routes: south along Highway 101 via the 50-minute Saltery Bay to Earls Cove ferry to Sechelt and Gibsons (about 175 km plus two ferries to Vancouver), west via the Powell River (Westview) to Little River ferry to Comox and Campbell River on Vancouver Island (about 80 minutes), north to Lund near Mile 0 of Highway 101 (about 28 km), and the loop to Texada Island via the Westview to Blubber Bay ferry (about 35 minutes). Cross-border travel into the US is allowed with many hosts, just confirm at booking. Travel to Mexico isn't permitted on RVezy rentals. Pro tip: reserve the Comox sailing in advance to save your spot.
bcferries.com/routes-fares/schedules/seasonal/SLT-ERLWhat should I budget for fuel during a qathet RV rental?
Fuel is one of the bigger line items, but qathet trips are blissfully short, so you won't burn through tanks. Expect a Class C motorhome to get 18 to 22 L/100km, a campervan rental in qathet around 12 to 15 L/100km, and a truck towing a travel trailer about 20 to 25 L/100km. Gas in Powell River typically runs $1.65 to $1.85 per litre (a bit higher than Vancouver due to the ferry-served location). There are stations at Westview, Cranberry, Town Centre and Stillwater, plus one in Lund. Don't forget to budget for BC Ferries: a 21-foot RV is roughly $90 to $130 per sailing between Saltery Bay and Earls Cove. Pro tip: fill up in Powell River before heading north to Lund.
www2.gov.bc.ca/gov/content/industry/natural-gas-oil/petroleum-products/transportation-fuel-pricesHow far ahead should I book campgrounds in qathet?
For the best campgrounds near qathet during summer, book three to four months out. Haywire Bay Regional Park on Powell Lake reserves through the qathet Regional District and fills quickly for July and August weekends, and Shelter Point Regional Park on Texada Island is just as popular. Willingdon Beach Campsite, operated by the City of Powell River, takes reservations directly and is the most popular waterfront site in town. Saltery Bay Provincial Park books through the BC Parks Discover Camping system starting in spring. Pro tip: shoulder-season weekends in May, June and September are often walk-in friendly, ideal for a spontaneous family RV trip qathet style without the booking stress.
qathet.ca/services/parks-and-recreation/regional-parks-campgrounds/What are local driving conditions like in qathet?
Driving in qathet is refreshingly easy. Highway 101 is the main artery, a two-lane paved road running 75 km from Saltery Bay through Powell River up to Lund, with gentle curves, no mountain passes, and minimal traffic outside the ferry rush windows (typically 30 minutes before each Saltery Bay sailing). Watch for deer at dawn and dusk between Stillwater and Lang Bay, logging trucks on weekdays, and occasional rockfall warnings near Jervis Inlet. Winter brings rain rather than heavy snow, but tires must be M+S or 3-peak mountain snowflake rated from October 1 to April 30 on Highway 101. Pro tip: pull over at the rest stop above Saltery Bay for a stunning Jervis Inlet photo before catching the ferry.
www2.gov.bc.ca/gov/content/transportation/driving-and-cycling/traveller-information/seasonal/winter-driving/winter-tires-and-chainsWhat amenities will I find at qathet campgrounds?
qathet campgrounds range from full-service to delightfully rustic. Willingdon Beach Campsite in Powell River offers full hookups (water, 30 amp power, sewer), flush toilets, hot showers, laundry, and Wi-Fi. Haywire Bay Regional Park has piped drinking water, pit toilets, coin showers, a boat ramp, and a sani-dump nearby. Shelter Point on Texada Island offers flush toilets, showers, and a sani-station. Saltery Bay Provincial Park has potable water and pit toilets but no hookups. Pro tip: top up your fresh water at Willingdon Beach before heading to a backcountry-style site like Dinner Rock Recreation Site, where there are no services at all.
qathet.ca/services/parks-and-recreation/regional-parks-campgrounds/haywire-bay-regional-park-campground/park-amenities/What amenities are inside a typical qathet RV rental?
Even compact rentals come well-equipped. A typical motorhome rental in qathet sleeps 4 to 7, with a queen bed, dinette and overcab or bunk options, a propane stove and oven, fridge/freezer, microwave, hot-water shower, flush toilet, furnace, air conditioning, and seatbelts for every traveller. Most include a generator or solar setup (great for Sunshine Coast Trail trailheads), a TV with DVD, and many offer Wi-Fi hotspots that work along Highway 101. Campervan rentals in qathet are cozier but include a kitchenette and convertible bed. Pro tip: ask your host about the inverter capacity if you plan to boondock at recreation sites like Dinner Rock or along Theodosia Inlet, where there's no shore power.
www2.gov.bc.ca/gov/content/transportation/driving-and-cycling/recreational-vehiclesWhat add-ons and pickup options should I know about?
qathet hosts offer popular add-ons that turn a good trip into a great one: kayak or paddleboard rentals (perfect for Powell Lake and Okeover Inlet), bedding and kitchen kits, BBQs, generators, bike racks for the Sunshine Coast Trail, and outdoor heaters for cool coastal evenings. Pickup typically happens at the host's home in Powell River, Cranberry, Westview or Lund, with a 60 to 90-minute walkthrough included. Delivery to Saltery Bay, Willingdon Beach or your campsite is widely available for an extra fee, usually $1.50 to $2.50 per kilometre. Mileage policies, pet fees, and generator hours are all set on each listing. Pro tip: message your host before booking to bundle add-ons, they often discount packages.
tourismpowellriver.com/How does payment and the security deposit work?
Payment is straightforward and secure: RVezy processes everything through the platform with Visa, Mastercard or Amex. A deposit is typically charged at booking with the balance due before your trip, and the schedule is shown clearly at checkout. The host's refundable security deposit is a separate hold placed a few days before pickup (commonly $500 to $1,500 depending on the RV class) and is released after drop-off, assuming the RV comes back in the same condition. To keep your deposit safe, do a detailed photo walkthrough at pickup and drop-off, return the RV with the same fuel and propane levels, and dump the tanks at Haywire Bay or Shelter Point before heading home.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I take a qathet RV rental across the BC Ferries?
Yes, BC Ferries welcomes RVs on every route that serves qathet, and almost all hosts allow ferry travel as a normal part of an RV road trip from qathet. The Saltery Bay to Earls Cove sailing (50 minutes, non-bookable, drive-up only) connects you to the southern Sunshine Coast and onward to Vancouver, while the Westview to Little River sailing (75 minutes, reservable) takes you to Comox on Vancouver Island. Vehicle fares are based on length, so longer Class A motorhomes pay more than a Class B campervan. Pro tip: arrive at Saltery Bay at least 60 minutes before sailing in summer, the lineup of RVs heading south on Sundays is legendary, and there's no overflow lot.
