It held town status prior to 2023 and is now part of the town of Carleton North. The area is best known as the global headquarters of McCain Foods and calls itself the French Fry Capital of the World. The region has a humid continental climate with warm summers and cold, snowy winters. Most private campgrounds run a late-spring to early-fall season, which shapes trip planning.

Private campgrounds in the area take reservations directly. River Country Campground books by phone and through its own website. Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park Camp-Resort: Woodstock and Houlton / Canadian Border KOA Journey both use their own online reservation systems, with KOA also offering an app. Book summer weekends and long-weekend holidays several months out, especially for pull-through, full-hookup, or big-rig sites. Across the border, Aroostook State Park reservations are handled through the Maine State Parks reservation service by phone or at campwithme.com. With the current primitive operation, calling the park directly is the safest way to confirm availability. Connell City Park is a municipal campground in Woodstock; contact the park office at the listed number to confirm site type and payment. Bring passports for any cross-border trips.
