Campgrounds and RV parks near Hillsborough, NB

The main draw is Hopewell Rocks. Tides rise and fall some 14 metres at Hopewell Rocks, and when the tide is out visitors can walk on the ocean floor among towering flowerpot rocks, while at high tide sea kayak tours run around the five-story rock formations and to a number of sea caves. Plan the day around the posted tide schedule; low and high tide are roughly six hours apart. Fundy National Park adds coastal hiking, waterfalls, and swimming. The park showcases a rugged coastline which rises up to the Canadian Highlands, the highest tides in the world and more than 25 waterfalls. At Fundy National Park, the difference between high and low tide can be as much as 12 metres. Closer to the campgrounds, Broadleaf Ranch offers horseback trail rides, canoeing, and wagon activities on a large working ranch property. Hillsborough itself has the Albert County Museum and the Salem and Hillsborough Railroad for a shorter, kid-friendly afternoon.

The Hillsborough camping season is compressed. Most private campgrounds open in May and close in mid-October, and the anchor attraction follows a similar rhythm: the park is open seasonally from mid-May to mid-October, and peak season runs through the summer months. Shoulder-season travellers should confirm gate hours directly with the park, since services scale back before closure. July and August are peak. The area can get very busy with tourists, so it's best to plan a visit for early or late in the season. Late June and early September offer easier reservations, warm days, and cooler nights that reduce bug pressure. Fall colour typically peaks in early to mid October, though many private sites have already closed by then. Winter access to the coast is limited and hazardous. The park and facilities are open from May to October, and whilst the park is accessible during the winter season it is at your own risk and not advised. Off-season visitors encounter no staffed facilities, no shuttle, and unmaintained trails and stairs; incoming tides run fast on the mudflats, and cliff conditions become more unstable during freeze-thaw cycles.

Sites near Hillsborough tend to be wooded and moderately treed rather than open resort-style. Expect gravel or grass pads, 30-amp service at full-service loops, and shared washrooms with showers at the larger properties. Cellular coverage is inconsistent along Route 114, and travellers often see better performance from Bell or Telus than Rogers in the immediate Hopewell Cape area. Grocery runs are easiest in Riverview or Moncton, about 30 to 40 minutes north. Closer to the campgrounds, on-site stores carry basics but not full provisions. Fuel is limited south of Hillsborough, so top up before heading toward Fundy National Park. Bring layers even in summer. The park is liberally peppered with iconic Canadian imagery for photographers lucky enough to catch sunlight instead of frequent morning fogs, which usually burn off by mid-afternoon in summer. Coastal temperatures can run several degrees cooler than Moncton, and evenings near the water stay cool well into July.
