The Tobique River is the main draw. It runs from Nictau Lake at Mount Carleton down through Plaster Rock to the Saint John River, and is a straightforward multi-day canoe or kayak route for families. Brook trout and Atlantic salmon fishing are long-standing local traditions, and Sadler's Nature Trail loops Roulston Lake right at the tourist park. Mount Carleton Provincial Park lies about an hour north and holds the highest peak in the Maritimes, with trails up Mount Sagamook, Mount Bailey, and along Bald Mountain Brook. The park is a designated Dark Sky Preserve, so clear nights are worth planning around. In the village, the World's Largest Fiddleheads sculpture at Plaster Rock Tourist Park is an easy photo stop, and Roulston Lake hosts the World Pond Hockey Championship each February.

Summer is the busiest window. Mid-June through early September brings the warmest, driest camping conditions, and Mount Carleton weekends book out first. Fall extends the busy period through leaf season, when hardwood ridges around the park turn red and gold, though nights cool sharply and some services scale back after Labour Day. Winter is a genuine season here rather than an off-season closure. Snowmobiling, ice fishing, snowshoeing, and cross-country skiing continue through the coldest months, and Plaster Rock hosts the World Pond Hockey Championship on Roulston Lake in mid-February. Spring is short, wet, and mud-season on backroads, but it is also fiddlehead-picking time along the Tobique.

Expect a rural, forested setting rather than a resort environment. Sites near Plaster Rock tend to be small, family-run, and partially serviced, with dump stations and potable water more common than full hookups. Cell reception is patchy in the valley and thin inside Mount Carleton Provincial Park, so download maps and reservation confirmations before leaving town. Black bears, moose, and deer are present throughout the region, and Mount Carleton is home to more wild animal species than any other part of the province. Standard food storage rules apply. Roads into camps off Route 385 include gravel sections that are fine for most RVs in dry weather but slow going after heavy rain. New Brunswick is officially bilingual, and park staff typically switch between English and French. Bring cash for smaller private operators and any purchases that fall outside standard card systems.
