Camping near Clare, Nova Scotia
Clare, known locally as Baie Sainte-Marie, sits along Saint Mary's Bay on Nova Scotia's Acadian Shore, roughly 25 minutes north of Yarmouth and about 30 minutes from the Digby ferry terminal. Clare is the largest Acadian community in Nova Scotia, also known as La Baie Sainte-Marie. The area draws RV travellers arriving via the Yarmouth ferry from Bar Harbor, Maine, or the Digby ferry from Saint John, New Brunswick.
Campgrounds cluster along Highway 1 near Church Point, Grosses Coques, and Meteghan. Church Point Campground and Belle Baie Park Oceanside Campground sit within about a kilometre of each other, with Whale Cove Campground roughly 10 kilometres away. Camper's Haven Campground and Cottages offers another private option in the region. For a provincial-park experience, Ellenwood Lake Provincial Park is a short drive south in Deerfield.
RV renters use Clare as a base for touring the French Shore, sampling Acadian cuisine, and reaching Bay of Fundy attractions without long daily drives.
Things to do around Clare
The shoreline of Saint Mary's Bay is the main attraction. Travellers can visit Église Sainte-Marie in Church Point, walk Mavillette Beach Provincial Park, and take in views from Cape Saint Mary Lighthouse Park. The Bay of Fundy offers the highest tides in the world, whale watching, clam digging, Acadian festivals, and local cuisine. Smuggler's Cove Provincial Park in Meteghan offers a short trail to a coastal lookoff.
Inland, Ellenwood Lake Provincial Park adds freshwater options. A sandy beach with free showers offers a spot to cool off, and the lake itself is stunning. Cyclists come for the Gran Fondo Baie Sainte-Marie, and summer visitors time trips around Le Festival acadien de Clare and Musique de la Baie kitchen parties.

The camping season on the Acadian Shore is short. Most private campgrounds open in mid to late May and close in late September or early October, and provincial parks follow a similar window. Ellenwood Lake Provincial Park's 2026 operating season runs May 15 to October 12. Outside these dates, RV travellers should expect closures, limited services, and no water at seasonal sites.
July and August are peak months, coinciding with warm ocean temperatures, supervised beach swimming, and the Festival acadien de Clare. Sites at popular oceanside campgrounds and at Ellenwood Lake fill quickly during long weekends and mid-summer. Booking early is recommended for peak-season dates, while shoulder-season visits are quieter and easier to reserve.
Spring and fall bring cooler, wetter conditions and more fog rolling in off the Bay of Fundy, but the region stays green and coastal trails remain walkable. Nova Scotia has frequent coastal fog and marked changeability of weather from day to day. Winter camping is not offered at the main campgrounds serving Clare.

We rented a 24’ motor home with a kitchen bump out. We used the RV for 2 weeks in PEI and Nova Scotia. The week in PEI we rented bikes as well as a bike rack that mounted on hitch in back on RV. The trip went well and there were no issues with extra length with bikes attached. Jesse was great to communicate with and responded quickly to any inquiries about the RV. We would do this rental process with Jesse again should we make our way back to the east coast. The back and secondary roads were not that challenging to drive.. which was a nice surprise! Locals seemed to cut us slack with our below speed limit driving at times..

How to book a campsite near Clare
Nova Scotia provincial parks use a central reservation system. Ellenwood Lake in Deerfield can be reserved online through Nova Scotia Parks, with a park telephone at 902-761-2400. Sites are released on a rolling launch date in late winter, and popular weekends can book out quickly after opening.
The park has 21 sites with full services and 30-amp electric, typical of Nova Scotia provincial parks. Unserviced wooded sites include a campfire ring and picnic table, serviced sites add two-way hookups with 30-amp electrical and drinking water, and walk-in wooded sites are available for those who prefer a short trek. A dump station and potable water fill-up are on site.
Private campgrounds in Church Point, Grosses Coques, and the surrounding area are booked directly with the operator by phone, email, or the campground's own website. Full hookups, pull-throughs, and seasonal sites are handled outside the provincial system, so RV renters should contact each property directly to confirm rig length, hookup type, and cancellation terms.
What to expect on the ground
Oceanside campgrounds along Saint Mary's Bay sit on open ground with views across to Digby Neck. Belle Baie Park Oceanside Campground offers overnight sites with 30- and 50-amp electrical, water and sewage hookups, plus a playground, heated pool, sandy beach, and weekend activities. Campers can watch the highest tides in the world over morning coffee and take in sunsets over the bay. Expect wind off the water and cool evenings even in summer.
Inland at Ellenwood Lake, the setting is different. Most sites are wooded with shade for much of the day, and cell service varies noticeably from site to site. Evenings can be dark, which the region promotes for stargazing. Roads through Clare are two-lane and generally easy to navigate, though narrow shoulders and coastal fog call for slower driving.

rvezy.com/insurance-and-protectionWhat if I need to cancel my Clare RV rental?

Nova Scotia can see the occasional Atlantic storm or hurricane remnant in late summer, so if severe weather threatens your Clare RV trip, reach out to RVezy support and they will help you review your options. help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on an RV trip in Clare?
Absolutely. Clare is a great dog destination and pet-friendly RV rental Clare options are easy to find on RVezy, just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter when you search. Many hosts along the French Shore welcome well-behaved dogs, sometimes with a small cleaning fee. Once you arrive, your pup will love the long sandy stretch at Mavillette Beach Provincial Park and the boardwalk and trails at Smugglers Cove Provincial Park. Belliveau Cove and the trails around the Cape Sainte-Marie lighthouse are also leash-friendly. Pack a towel by the door, the salty sand and Fundy mud love to ride home with happy dogs after a beach day.
parks.novascotia.ca/park/smugglers-coveCan the RV be delivered to my campsite in Clare?
Yes, RV delivery in Clare is one of the easiest ways to start your trip, especially if you are flying into Halifax or Yarmouth and would rather not drive a big rig down Highway 101. Many RVezy hosts on the French Shore deliver and set up at popular spots like Belle Baie Park in Church Point or a private cottage driveway in Meteghan. They will level the RV, hook up power and water, and walk you through every system before handing over the keys. Filter for Delivery when searching. Ask the host to deliver to Belle Baie Park so you can walk straight to Universite Sainte-Anne and catch live Acadian music.

novascotia.com/places-to-go/regions/yarmouth-and-acadian-shoresWhere are the best campgrounds near Clare, Nova Scotia?
You are spoiled for choice. Top picks for RV camping Clare include Belle Baie Park in Church Point (oceanfront sites with full hookups right on St. Mary's Bay), Ellenwood Lake Provincial Park about an hour south near Deerfield (quiet lakeside sites, great for families), and Mavillette Beach area private campgrounds with views over the Bay of Fundy. The Yarmouth and Acadian Shores KOA-style and private parks south of Clare round out the options with full services. Book Belle Baie Park early if you are coming for the Festival acadien in early August, oceanfront sites fill up months ahead.
parks.novascotia.ca/park/ellenwoodWhen is the best time of year for an RV trip in Clare?
Mid-June through late September is prime time for a Clare RV trip, with daytime highs of 20 to 25°C and warm Bay of Fundy breezes. July and August are the warmest and busiest, with the legendary Festival acadien de Clare lighting up the French Shore in early August. September brings fewer crowds, lower rates, and stunning coastal colour as the Acadian forest turns. Late May and early October are quieter shoulder seasons (12 to 18°C) and perfect for whale watching out of Tiverton on nearby Digby Neck. Winters are cold and wet, so most hosts close listings November through April. Pro tip: aim for the third week of July for the warmest swimming at Mavillette Beach.
climate.weather.gc.ca/climate_normals/results_1981_2010_e.html?stnID=6354I have never rented an RV before. Will I be okay driving around Clare?
You will do great. Clare is one of the easiest places in Nova Scotia for a first time renting an RV. Highway 101 and Route 1 along the French Shore are well-maintained and lightly trafficked compared to Halifax or the Cabot Trail. Every RVezy host gives you a full orientation at pickup: how to level, hook up, dump, drive, and park, no question is too basic. You can message the host any time during your trip, and 24/7 roadside assistance is included with every booking through the RVezy protection plan. Start with a short first day, drive from your pickup spot to Belle Baie Park or Ellenwood Lake, set up in daylight, and you will feel like a pro by morning.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat happens if the RV breaks down during my trip?
You are covered. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, so a flat tire on Route 1 near Saulnierville or a battery issue at Mavillette Beach is one phone call away from help. You will find the roadside number in your booking confirmation, and the RVezy support team is available around the clock. Your host is also just a message away and usually knows the closest service shop in Meteghan, Digby, or Yarmouth. Snap a photo of the RV's VIN, plate, and propane tank at pickup, having those details handy makes any roadside call faster.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat are the best road trip routes from Clare?
An RV road trip from Clare can go in three iconic directions. Head north up the Evangeline Trail to Digby (1 hour, world-famous scallops) and on to Annapolis Royal (1.5 hours, historic gardens and Fort Anne). Head east to Kejimkujik National Park (2.5 hours, dark-sky paddling and forested campsites). Or loop the full south shore: Clare to Yarmouth to Shelburne to Lunenburg to Halifax over 4 to 5 days. If you want to push further, the Cabot Trail in Cape Breton is about 6 hours one way and absolutely worth it. Pro tip: take the Digby-Saint John ferry for a New Brunswick loop, just confirm RV dimensions with Bay Ferries before booking your sailing.
novascotia.com/things-to-do/scenic-travelwaysHow much will fuel cost for my Clare RV trip?
Fuel is one of the easier costs to predict. Nova Scotia regulates gas prices weekly, and in Clare you'll find stations in Meteghan, Church Point, and Saulnierville along Route 1. Class B campervans average 18 to 22 L/100km, Class C motorhomes 20 to 28 L/100km, and big Class A rigs 28 to 35 L/100km. A typical 4-day, 600 km Bay of Fundy loop in a Class C burns roughly $180 to $230 CAD in fuel at current prices. Pro tip: fill up in Yarmouth or Digby before heading into Clare, prices on the highway corridor are often a few cents cheaper than smaller village stations, and check the Nova Scotia Utility and Review Board site for the weekly regulated price.
nsuarb.ca/petroleum-productsHow far in advance should I book a campground near Clare?
For peak summer (July and August), book Nova Scotia provincial parks the moment reservations open, usually early April through the Parks Nova Scotia reservation system. Ellenwood Lake and Smugglers Cove sites near Clare go fast, especially weekends and the Festival acadien week in early August. Private parks like Belle Baie Park in Church Point take direct bookings and also fill 2 to 3 months ahead for oceanfront sites. Shoulder season (June, September) you can usually grab a spot 2 to 4 weeks out. Pro tip: if you strike out on a Friday arrival, try a Sunday-to-Thursday booking instead, you'll often find oceanfront availability and pay less per night.
parks.novascotia.ca/reservationsWhat are driving conditions like in Clare?
Driving in Clare is genuinely relaxing. Highway 101 from Yarmouth to Digby is a divided, two-lane highway with gentle grades and almost no traffic outside summer rush. Route 1, the slower coastal road through the French Shore villages, is narrower but very RV-friendly with low speed limits (50 to 70 km/h). Watch for fog along the Bay of Fundy in early morning, deer at dusk especially near wooded stretches around Hectanooga, and the occasional logging truck. There are no mountain passes or low bridges to worry about. Pro tip: take Route 1 instead of Highway 101 on at least one leg, the Acadian flag-painted houses and ocean views from Belliveau Cove to Saulnierville are unforgettable.
511.novascotia.ca/What amenities will I find at campgrounds in Clare?
Most campgrounds near Clare offer 15, 30, or 50 amp electric, potable water fill, and sewer hookups or dump stations on site. Belle Baie Park has full hookups, hot showers, laundry, and Wi-Fi right on St. Mary's Bay. Ellenwood Lake Provincial Park offers unserviced and electrical sites plus a dump station, beach, and playground. Smugglers Cove RV Park has full services with clifftop views. Need to dump or fill water between stops? The Irving Big Stop in Digby and the Yarmouth visitor centre area both have public RV facilities. Pro tip: top up fresh water in Church Point before heading to any unserviced provincial park site, the village tap water is excellent.
parks.novascotia.ca/content/campingWhat is actually inside the RVs I can rent in Clare?
More than you would expect. A typical motorhome rental Clare includes a full kitchen (fridge, freezer, stove, microwave, sink), a bathroom with toilet and shower, a dinette and sofa that convert to beds, a queen or king main bed, climate control, and seatbelts for every traveler. Most Class C and travel trailer listings sleep 4 to 6 comfortably, while bigger Class A motorhomes sleep up to 8. Many hosts include a generator, outdoor awning, TV, Bluetooth speakers, and even bikes or kayaks for an extra fee. When comparing campervan rental Clare options, check the fresh water tank size, anything over 30 gallons means you can comfortably overnight off-grid near Cape Sainte-Marie.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Clare%2C%20Nova%20ScotiaWhat add-ons and options can I get with my Clare RV rental?
Hosts on RVezy offer all kinds of extras to make your trip easier. Common add-ons for an RV rental in Clare include linen and towel packages, kitchen kits, outdoor BBQ propane tanks, generators, bike racks, kayaks, fishing gear, and child car seats. Many hosts offer delivery and setup (great if you want the RV waiting at Belle Baie Park) and some offer pickup at Yarmouth Airport or the Digby ferry terminal for a flat fee. Mileage options vary by listing, with daily kilometre caps or unlimited mileage upgrades clearly shown on each listing page. Bundle delivery plus a linen pack plus a generator at booking, hosts often discount the bundle and you arrive to a fully ready Acadian Shore basecamp.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Clare%2C%20Nova%20ScotiaHow do payments and the security deposit work?
Payment is simple and secure through the RVezy platform, no cash to the host, no awkward e-transfers. You pay with credit card at booking, and a refundable security deposit is pre-authorized (not charged) on your card a few days before pickup. The deposit amount is shown on the listing before you book and is separate from the booking payment. As long as you return the RV in the condition you got it (fuel level, propane, cleanliness, no damage), the hold is released after the trip ends. Do a quick video walk-around with the host at pickup and again at drop-off, it is the single best way to keep your deposit smooth and your Clare trip stress-free.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I take my Clare RV rental across the border into the US or to New Brunswick?
Cross-province travel within Canada is generally welcomed. Many hosts are happy for you to take their RV from Clare across to New Brunswick via the Digby to Saint John ferry or up to PEI and Cape Breton. Confirm with the host through RVezy messaging before booking so it is noted on your trip agreement. Cross-border travel into the United States may be allowed by some hosts depending on their insurance, so always ask first and get written confirmation in the RVezy chat. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on any RVezy rental. If you are eyeing a Bay of Fundy loop, the Digby to Saint John ferry carries RVs, book your sailing as soon as your RV is confirmed.
