Campgrounds and RV parks near Yarmouth, NS

Cape Forchu Light Station, just outside town, is the headline coastal stop, with a working lighthouse, walking trails, and an exposed headland for fog and sunset viewing. Mavillette Beach Provincial Park and Port Maitland Beach Provincial Park give RV families wide sand beaches with warm tidal flats at low tide. The Yarmouth County Museum and the Firefighters' Museum of Nova Scotia cover local maritime and Acadian history. Ellenwood Lake Provincial Park has a supervised swim beach in July and August, a two-kilometre interpretive trail, and canoe and kayak access on the lake. From Digby Neck, near Whale Cove Campground, scheduled whale-watching tours run out to Petit Passage and the waters around Brier Island.

The Yarmouth camping season is short and concentrated. Most private and provincial campgrounds in the region open around the Victoria Day long weekend in May and close in October. Ellenwood Lake Provincial Park typically opens in mid-May and runs into early October, with supervised swimming only in July and August. Private parks such as Camper's Haven Campground and Cottages open for the May long weekend and stay open into the fall shoulder season. July and August are the peak booking window, driven by ferry traffic from Maine and Nova Scotia road trips. Sites at Ellenwood Lake fill quickly for summer weekends, and reservations open in the spring through the provincial system. June and September are quieter and easier to book, but cooler and foggier. Coastal fog is a year-round feature in Yarmouth and can roll in heavily from May through September. Hurricane and post-tropical storm activity peaks from August into October and can force last-minute closures or evacuations on exposed coastal sites.

Expect a maritime climate with frequent fog, cool nights, and changeable weather even at the height of summer. Cell coverage is uneven at the more rural sites. Most provincial sites are wooded and graveled with picnic tables and fire rings, with no individual water or sewer connection unless booked as a serviced site. Generator use at Ellenwood Lake is restricted to set windows during the day, roughly mid-morning and late afternoon. Leashed dogs are welcome at most campgrounds in the area but not in swim areas or buildings. Mosquitoes and blackflies peak in late spring and early summer.
