Camping near Alnwick/Haldimand, Ontario
Alnwick/Haldimand is a rural township in Northumberland County, Central Ontario, positioned between Lake Ontario to the south and Rice Lake to the north. The township was formed by merging the former Alnwick and Haldimand townships, and it contains the community of Grafton along with parts of the Alderville First Nation. Its landscape sits within the Oak Ridges Moraine, a hilly, forested feature that shapes much of the surrounding countryside.
The area gives RV travellers two very different waterfronts within a short drive. Rice Lake is a shallow, warm-water fishing lake to the north, while the Lake Ontario shoreline near Cobourg offers larger beaches and marina access to the south. The Ganaraska Forest, one of the largest continuous forested blocks in southern Ontario, also lies within reach of the township.
Campgrounds in the area range from private lakeside resorts to small rural parks. Options close to town include Jubalee Beach Park, Cobourg East Campground, Castleton Hills RV Park, Golden Beach Resort And Trailer Park, and Victoria Park Campgrounds.
Things to do near Alnwick/Haldimand
Fishing and boating drive most trips. Rice Lake is well known for warm-water fishing and small-craft boating, and public boat launches make it easy to bring a runabout or fishing boat along with the RV. On the Lake Ontario side, sandy beaches, harbourfront walks in Cobourg, and marina access give families a second waterfront option.
Hiking and cycling are strong here thanks to the Ganaraska Forest and county-managed trails on the Oak Ridges Moraine. Presqu'ile Provincial Park, about thirty minutes east near Brighton, adds 16 kilometres of trails, a marsh boardwalk, and a 2.5-kilometre sandy beach.
Other nearby stops include the Alderville Black Oak Savanna, the PrimRose Donkey Sanctuary in Roseneath, and Shelter Valley Pines Golf Club.

The camping season in this part of Ontario is short and clearly defined. Most private campgrounds around Rice Lake and the Lake Ontario shoreline open in late April or May and close in October. The nearest provincial park, Presqu'ile in Brighton, runs its campground season from late April to late October, and its eight campground loops are served by comfort stations and water taps during that window.
July and August are peak season. Warm-water swimming on Rice Lake, long daylight hours, and lakeshore breezes on Lake Ontario draw the heaviest bookings, and popular sites can sell out months ahead. May, June, and September are calmer, with cooler nights, fewer bugs later in the season, and better site availability, especially midweek.
Winter shuts most campgrounds down, though Presqu'ile stays open for day use year-round and is a known cold-weather birding spot on the north shore of Lake Ontario.

How to book
Private campgrounds near Alnwick/Haldimand, including the properties on Rice Lake and along the Lake Ontario shore, take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone. Summer weekends and long weekends fill early, so booking in late winter or early spring is the safest approach for July and August stays.
For Presqu'ile Provincial Park in nearby Brighton, reservations run through Ontario Parks. The system opens at 7:00 a.m. Eastern Time, five months in advance of the arrival date, and can be used online or by calling 1-888-ONT-PARK. Electric sites and sites large enough for RVs are the first to sell out.
Flexibility helps. Midweek stays and shoulder-season dates in May, June, and September are far easier to secure than summer weekends.
What to expect on the ground
This is rural Northumberland County, so expect two-lane county roads, rolling farmland, and short drives between campgrounds, lakes, and small towns like Grafton, Roseneath, and Cobourg. RV access is generally straightforward, but some private lakeside parks have tight interior roads, so confirming rig length with the campground before arrival is worthwhile.
Hookups vary widely. Larger private resorts near Rice Lake typically offer full or partial hookups, while smaller rural sites may be water-only or unserviced. Provincial park sites at Presqu'ile include electric and non-electric loops with comfort stations and water taps, but no water hookups at individual sites.
Groceries, fuel, and LP refills are easiest to find in Cobourg or Colborne along Highway 401. Cell service is reliable near the highway and thinner in the forested areas of the Oak Ridges Moraine.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Alnwick/Haldimand, ON
How much does an RV rental in Alnwick/Haldimand typically cost?
Renting an RV in Alnwick/Haldimand is one of the more affordable ways to explore Ontario's Northumberland County. On RVezy you will generally find travel trailers from around $100 to $180 CAD per night, campervans from about $150 to $250, and Class C motorhomes between $200 and $350 a night depending on size, age, and season. Because hosts in this rural township often skip the airport-area markups you would pay near Toronto, prices tend to run lower. Pro tip: booking midweek in late May or September unlocks the cheapest RV rental options in Alnwick/Haldimand, plus quieter campgrounds at Rice Lake and Presqu'ile.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Alnwick%2FHaldimand%2C%20OntarioWhat license do I need to rent an RV in Alnwick/Haldimand, Ontario?
Good news: a regular Ontario G-class driver's license (or its equivalent from your home province, state, or country) is all you need to rent an RV in Alnwick/Haldimand. No special RV license, air-brake endorsement, or commercial license is required for Class B campervans, Class C motorhomes, travel trailers, or fifth wheels available on RVezy. Approved drivers are generally 25 or older and verify their ID through the platform when booking, which only takes a few minutes. Visiting from overseas? Bring your home license plus an International Driving Permit and you are set. Most first-time renters tell us the sign-up process is the easiest part of their trip.

help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on an RV trip from Alnwick/Haldimand?
Absolutely, and you have picked a great region for it. Pet-friendly RV rental options in Alnwick/Haldimand are easy to find on RVezy: just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter and you will see hosts who welcome dogs (and sometimes cats). Once you are on the road, dogs are welcome at Ontario Parks campgrounds like Presqu'ile and Ferris Provincial Park as long as they are leashed, and Rice Lake's trails offer plenty of scenic spots to roam. Pro tip: Peter's Woods Provincial Nature Reserve, a short drive from the township, has a quiet hiking loop that is perfect for early-morning walks with a four-legged co-pilot.
ontarioparks.ca/park/presquileCan the RV be delivered to my campground in Alnwick/Haldimand?
Yes, and it is one of the easiest ways to enjoy your trip stress-free. RV delivery in Alnwick/Haldimand is offered by many hosts on RVezy: filter by Delivery on the search page and you will see listings where the owner brings the RV directly to your campsite at Golden Beach Resort, a Rice Lake campground, or Presqu'ile Provincial Park, then levels it, hooks up power and water, and walks you through every system. For first-time renters, this skips the driving and setup learning curve entirely. Delivery fees vary by distance, so message the host before booking to confirm pricing to your specific campground.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Alnwick%2FHaldimand%2C%20OntarioHow far can I drive from Alnwick/Haldimand on a typical RV trip?
You've picked a fantastic launch pad for an Ontario RV trip. From Alnwick/Haldimand you can comfortably reach Presqu'ile Provincial Park (about 35 km southeast), the Sandbanks beaches of Prince Edward County (around 90 km east, roughly 75 minutes), Algonquin Provincial Park's southern access points (about 230 km north, around 3 hours), and downtown Toronto (about 130 km southwest). Hosts on RVezy set their own mileage policies, but you'll often find RV rental with unlimited mileage listings or generous daily kilometre allowances perfect for these distances. Pro tip: filter by unlimited mileage if you're planning a longer loop through the Kawarthas and Trent-Severn Waterway.
ontario.ca/page/road-conditionsWhere are the best campgrounds near Alnwick/Haldimand for RV camping?
You're spoiled for choice when it comes to RV camping Alnwick/Haldimand. Sunset Retreat on Rice Lake in Grafton offers serviced waterfront sites perfect for fishing weekends. Pinnacle Park Trailer just off Highway 401 in Roseneath is convenient for short stays. Lang's Resort and Campground on Dunnette Landing Road is a long-standing Rice Lake favourite with full hookups and a beach. For a provincial-park experience, Presqu'ile Provincial Park (about 35 km away in Brighton) and Ferris Provincial Park near Campbellford are top picks with electrical sites, dump stations, and beautiful trails. Pro tip: provincial park sites open for reservation five months out, so set a calendar reminder.
ontarioparks.ca/park/presquileWhen is the best time to rent an RV in Alnwick/Haldimand?
Late May through early October is prime time for an Alnwick/Haldimand RV trip, with daytime highs ranging from about 18°C in May and September to 26-28°C in July and August, and crisp, comfortable nights ideal for campfires. July and August are peak season with the warmest swimming at Rice Lake and Lake Ontario. September is the local insider favourite: the leaves on the Oak Ridges Moraine start to turn, the bugs are gone, and campgrounds quiet down. Late September into October delivers spectacular fall colour through the Northumberland County Forest. Pro tip: book Labour Day weekend trips early, as Rice Lake fills up fast with anglers chasing one last bass run.
climate.weather.gc.ca/climate_normals/index_e.htmlI've never rented an RV before. What should I expect?
You're in great hands. First time renting an RV is the most common scenario on RVezy, and hosts in Alnwick/Haldimand are used to walking new renters through everything. At pickup (or at your campsite if you choose delivery), your host will give you a hands-on orientation covering driving, propane, water tanks, the generator, slide-outs, and dumping. You can also message hosts before booking with any questions, no obligation. The rural roads around Grafton, Roseneath, and Alderville are wide, low-traffic, and great for getting comfortable behind the wheel. Pro tip: pick a smaller Class C or campervan for your first trip, then graduate to a fifth wheel once you've got a weekend or two under your belt.
ontario.ca/page/driving-and-roadsWhat happens if my RV breaks down during my trip?
You are never on your own. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, so if you have a flat tire near Roseneath, lock yourself out at Golden Beach Resort, or need a tow back from Presqu'ile, one phone call gets help dispatched. Your host is typically just a text away and knows their RV inside out, so quick questions like how to reset the inverter are usually solved in minutes. RVezy customer support is also available before, during, and after your trip. Pro tip: save the roadside assistance number in your phone at pickup so it is ready if you ever need it.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Alnwick/Haldimand RV rental across the US border?
Cross-border trips into the United States are possible on many RVezy rentals, but you'll need to confirm two things first: that your specific host allows it, and that the protection package covers US travel for your trip dates. Simply message the host directly from the listing before booking to get written approval. Travel to Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because insurance coverage doesn't extend there. Popular cross-border routes from Alnwick/Haldimand include heading south through the Thousand Islands crossing toward the Adirondacks (about 3 hours) or west via the Lewiston-Queenston Bridge toward the Finger Lakes (around 3.5 hours). Bring your passport and a copy of the host's permission letter.
cbsa-asfc.gc.ca/travel-voyage/menu-eng.htmlHow much should I budget for fuel on an RV road trip from Alnwick/Haldimand?
Fuel is usually the biggest variable cost on an RV road trip from Alnwick/Haldimand, so it's worth planning. Class B campervans typically get around 18-22 MPG (about 11-13 L/100km), Class C motorhomes 10-14 MPG (17-23 L/100km), and travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle but expect 12-16 MPG combined. Gas prices in Northumberland County tend to run a few cents cheaper than downtown Toronto, with stations in Cobourg, Brighton, and Colborne along Highway 401 being convenient fill-up points. For a long weekend covering 500 km, budget roughly $150-$250 CAD in fuel. Pro tip: fill up in Colborne before heading north toward Rice Lake, where rural stations charge more.
ontario.ca/page/gasoline-pricesHow far in advance should I book a campground near Alnwick/Haldimand?
For the smoothest Alnwick/Haldimand RV trip, book your campsites as early as possible. Ontario Parks opens reservations exactly five months ahead at 7:00 a.m. through the official Ontario Parks reservation site, so for a July 15 stay at Presqu'ile or Ferris Provincial Park, log in on February 15. Weekends in July and August often sell out within minutes. Private Rice Lake campgrounds like Sunset Retreat, Lang's Resort, and Pinnacle Park typically open their season in April and accept bookings directly through their websites. Pro tip: if your dates are flexible, use the Ontario Parks "Flexible Dates" filter to scan a whole month, and set up cancellation alerts to grab last-minute openings.
ontarioparks.ca/reservationsWhat are local driving conditions like in Alnwick/Haldimand?
Driving around Alnwick/Haldimand is refreshingly mellow, especially compared to GTA traffic. The township sits on the gentle hills of the Oak Ridges Moraine, with County Road 45, County Road 18, and Highway 401 being the main routes, all paved, well maintained, and easy for first-time RVers. Some side roads near Roseneath and Alderville are gravel and a bit narrow, so take it slow with longer rigs. Watch for white-tailed deer at dawn and dusk, especially near the Northumberland County Forest. In winter, lake-effect snow squalls off Lake Ontario can hit suddenly. Pro tip: avoid the Highway 401 stretch through Toronto during weekday rush hours by timing your departure for after 10 a.m.
511on.ca/What amenities will I find at campgrounds near Alnwick/Haldimand?
Campgrounds near Alnwick/Haldimand range from full-service resorts to back-to-basics provincial parks, so you can pick the comfort level you want. Rice Lake favourites like Lang's Resort, Sunset Retreat, and Pinnacle Park offer 30-amp electrical, water, sewer hookups on many sites, plus dump stations, showers, laundry, and lake access. Presqu'ile and Ferris Provincial Parks provide 15/30-amp electrical sites, comfort stations with flush toilets and hot showers, dump stations, and potable water fill stations. Most sites include a fire pit and picnic table. Pro tip: bring at least 30 metres (100 feet) of electrical extension cord, since pedestals at provincial parks can be a long stretch from your hookup.

Many include a TV, and a growing number offer Wi-Fi boosters or Starlink for remote-work weekends at Rice Lake. Generators are common in Class C motorhomes and toy haulers. Each listing page details exactly what is included plus optional add-ons like bedding kits, camp chairs, kayaks, or bike racks. Pro tip: message the host to confirm propane levels and whether linens are included before pickup.

Pro tip: review the full add-on list and mileage policy on each listing before booking, and message the host if you need a custom package.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Alnwick%2FHaldimand%2C%20OntarioHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is simple and secure: you pay through the RVezy platform when you book, never directly to the host in cash. Your card is charged for the rental total, taxes, and chosen protection plan, and a refundable security deposit is held separately on your card before pickup. The deposit amount is set by each host and shown on the listing page, typically ranging from about $500 to $1,500 CAD depending on the RV type. As long as you return the RV on time, clean, undamaged, and within the mileage and fuel terms, your deposit is released within a few days after your trip ends. Pro tip: take photos of the RV inside and out at pickup and dropoff to make any deposit conversations effortless.
