Campgrounds and RV parks near Melancthon, ON

Hiking is the headline activity. Mono Cliffs Provincial Park sits on the Niagara Escarpment with a network of trails including the Walter Tovell Trail, McCarston's Lake Trail, and the Cliff-Top Side Trail, connected to the Bruce Trail system. The park is day-use only and requires an advance daily vehicle permit through Ontario Parks. On the water, Earl Rowe Provincial Park offers a dammed reservoir with swimming, boat rentals, and fishing, and its Boyne River is known for salmon viewing in fall and trout viewing in spring. Cycling on quiet rural roads, horseback riding on designated multi-use trails at Mono Cliffs, and shoulder-season fall-colour drives round out the options. Nearby towns such as Shelburne, Creemore, and Elora add breweries, cafes, and river gorges within an easy drive.

The core camping season in this part of Ontario runs from May through October. Earl Rowe Provincial Park's Riverside Campground is open for the full operating season from May to October, while its Westside Campground opens only during peak season from June to September. Most private campgrounds in the area operate on a similar May-to-October schedule. July and August are the busiest weeks. Weekend sites at provincial parks and lakeside private resorts fill quickly once the five-month Ontario Parks booking window opens, and long weekends sell out fastest. Late June and early September are quieter and often more comfortable for hiking, with fewer bugs and cooler nights. Fall brings vivid colour along the escarpment through late September and early October, and Mono Cliffs parking capacity is capped, so advance day-use permits become essential on autumn weekends. Winter access is limited: Earl Rowe stays open year-round for day use and Mono Cliffs remains accessible for snowshoeing, but overnight RV camping in the immediate area is generally not available in the cold months.

Cell coverage is patchy on the concession roads around Melancthon and inside Mono Cliffs, so download maps and reservation barcodes before leaving town. Fuel, groceries, and RV supplies are easiest to find in Shelburne and Orangeville. Provincial park campsites at Earl Rowe accommodate RVs up to about 32 feet (10 metres), with electrical service in select loops such as Heydon Way and Fletcher's Field, and comfort stations with showers and laundry. Non-electrical loops such as Salmon Run, Rabbit Loop, Trillium Woods, and Meadowbrook suit smaller rigs and tents. Expect black flies and mosquitoes in late spring and early summer, sharp temperature drops overnight due to the elevation of the Dufferin Highlands, and firewood restrictions that typically require buying local supply on site.
