Campgrounds and RV parks near Ryerson, ON

Water dominates the itinerary. Lake Bernard offers swimming from a white sand beach and fishing for lake trout, rainbow trout and smallmouth bass, with on-site activities at Lake Bernard Park including canoeing, kayaking, paddle boating, hiking trails, mini-golf, horseshoe pits and daily hayrides. Boat rentals are widely available on the lake for families that want to spend a day on the water without towing a craft. Hiking sits close by at Mikisew Provincial Park. The park has three moderately difficult trails through changing forest and wetland areas: the Beaver Meadow and Maple Canyon loops, plus the Old Dog Trail that connects them to the day use area. Mikisew also has a pet exercise area with a dog-friendly beach, useful for renters travelling with dogs. Algonquin Provincial Park's west side is roughly an hour east for a longer day trip.

The camping season in this part of Ontario is short and clearly defined. Mikisew Provincial Park operates roughly from early May to mid-October, and most private parks in the Almaguin Highlands follow a similar May-through-Thanksgiving window. Outside those months, water is shut off, comfort stations close, and most gates are locked. July and August are the peak. Lake temperatures are warmest, black fly pressure has eased, and family programming at private parks is in full swing. This is also when reservations are hardest to secure and when weekend availability disappears first. Late June and the first half of September are the sweet spot for renters who want warm days, cooler nights and thinner crowds. Shoulder season brings trade-offs. May can still see overnight frost and lingering bugs, while October delivers strong hardwood colour through the maples and oaks but overnight lows near freezing. Winter use on Lake Bernard shifts to snowmobiling and ice fishing, with huts on the lake into April, though RV camping is not generally available in that window.

Expect classic Canadian Shield camping: granite, mixed forest, and lakes with sandy or gravel shorelines. Sites at private parks tend to be more open with full or partial hookups, while comfort stations at Mikisew are located in each of the two campgrounds and include flush toilets, showers and laundry facilities. Cell service along the Highway 11 corridor is generally reliable, but expect it to fade on back roads and inside deeper wooded loops. Groceries, fuel, an LCBO and a hardware store are available in Sundridge and South River, so restocking mid-trip is straightforward. Black flies peak in late May and early June; mosquitoes hold on through July evenings. Pack layers: overnight lows can drop sharply after sundown even in mid-summer.
