Camping near Southgate, Ontario
Southgate is a rural township in Grey County, Ontario, roughly two hours northwest of Toronto and within reach of the Saugeen River, the Beaver Valley, and the southern edge of the Dundalk Highlands. The area sits at higher elevation than most of southern Ontario, which shortens the shoulder seasons and produces cooler summer nights than nearby Lake Huron shore towns.
RV travellers use Southgate as a base for touring Grey and Bruce counties without staying on the busier Georgian Bay strip. Shamadon RV Resort is a family-oriented campground in West Grey County with over 130 full hook-up sites on 127 acres, and is big-rig friendly. Silent Valley, a Parkbridge Cottage and RV Resort, sits within 400 forested acres and features mature trees, a 20-acre spring-fed lake, and sandy beaches on site.
Smaller options round out the mix. Summer Place Resort and RV Trail and Amazing Rocky Park Campground serve travellers looking for quieter, no-frills sites, while Durham Conservation Area has 193 spacious sites for seasonal and transient camping, with scenic McGowan Falls as a highlight and a short walk into the Town of Durham.
Things to do around Southgate
The Saugeen River corridor is the main draw. Scenic McGowan Falls sits within Durham Conservation Area, where the riverbed and falls are limestone bedrock with many outcroppings to explore. The Riverview Trail and connecting paths total about 4 km. A disc golf course at Durham Conservation Area is included with day-use and camping fees, and combines the principles of golf with a flying disc.
On-site amenities extend the day. Shamadon RV Resort offers a sandy beach, soccer field, fishing hole, heated swimming pool, nature trails, dog park, and exercise equipment. Durham Conservation Area is a short walk to the Town of Durham, where visitors can shop for supplies, visit the art gallery, or dine at local restaurants and cafes. Grey County's waterfall touring route and rural cycling roads are within a short drive.

December - February
-2° / -11°C 75 mmHeavy lake-effect snow; most RV parks closed.
The RV season here is short and clearly defined. Durham Conservation Area is bookable online from February 1st through Thanksgiving, with the summer camping season running from late April to Thanksgiving weekend. Silent Valley operates from Victoria Day to Thanksgiving, with spacious lots and camping cabins for seasonal and overnight guests. Most private parks in the area follow a similar pattern, opening in May and closing in October.
Summer is the peak. July and August bring warm days, cool nights, and the highest booking pressure, especially on long weekends. Late spring can still see frost overnight, and blackfly activity peaks in late May and early June in the wooded conservation lands.
Winter is a different story. Mount Forest, just south of Southgate, has a humid continental climate with long, cold, snowy winters, and its elevation and location downwind of Lake Huron make it prone to lake-effect snow averaging nearly 300 centimetres per year. Durham Conservation Area has added winter camping with fully winterized facilities.

How to book campgrounds near Southgate
Reservation systems vary by operator. Durham Conservation Area, run by the Saugeen Valley Conservation Authority, can be booked online from February 1st through Thanksgiving through the SVCA reservation portal. Booking early in February is common for summer weekends, since seasonal renewals reduce transient inventory.
Parkbridge properties, including Silent Valley, are booked through the Parkbridge RV Resorts network, which lists overnight and seasonal availability across British Columbia, Alberta, Ontario, and Quebec. Private parks such as Shamadon RV Resort, Summer Place Resort and RV Trail, and Amazing Rocky Park Campground take reservations directly by phone or through their own websites.
For an RV rental delivered to a site, confirm site length, hookup type, and slide-out clearance with the campground before booking. Big-rig access is good at Shamadon but tighter at some conservation and smaller private sites.
What to expect on the ground
Sites in the Southgate area lean rural. Expect gravel or grass pads, mature hardwood shade, and mixed cell coverage that can drop off between the ridges. Shamadon's sites are equipped with water, sewage, and 30-50 amp electrical service, with pull-through and back-in options and most sites on cement pads. Durham Conservation Area offers spacious sites for both seasonal and transient camping, with a mix of serviced and non-serviced options.
Families will find the mix suits kids well. Silent Valley features mature trees, a 20-acre spring-fed lake, and sandy beaches on site. Small-town services in Durham, Dundalk, and Mount Forest cover groceries, propane, and basic RV supplies.
Come prepared for cool evenings even in July, and pack layers plus bug spray for early-season stays.

How much does it cost to rent an RV in Southgate, Ontario?
Good news: RV rental in Southgate, Ontario is one of the most affordable ways to explore Grey County and Georgian Bay. On RVezy, travel trailers typically run about $100 to $200 CAD per night, Class C motorhomes range from $200 to $350 CAD per night, and Class B campervans average $150 to $250 CAD per night. To find a cheap RV rental in Southgate, travel in May, June, or September when peak summer pricing eases and Highpoint Campground rates are lower. Pro tip: book mid-week stays to save on both the RV and your Dundalk campsite, and use the price filter on RVezy to match your budget instantly.
destinationontario.com/en-ca/articles/rving-ontario-for-beginnersWhat kind of driver's license do I need to rent an RV in Southgate, Ontario?
Great news: a standard Ontario Class G license is all you need to rent an RV in Southgate for almost every motorhome, campervan, or travel trailer on RVezy. Ontario rules allow a full Class G to operate motorhomes up to 11,000 kilograms, which covers nearly every Class B, Class C, and travel trailer you will find locally. RVezy approved drivers are generally 25 or older, and your ID is verified through the platform during checkout. Visiting from another province or country? Your home license is generally accepted, and international visitors should bring an International Driving Permit if their license is not in English or French.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsIs RV insurance and roadside assistance included with my Southgate RV rental?
Yes, every RV rental in Southgate booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can head toward Dundalk Memorial Park with real peace of mind. You choose your coverage level during checkout (not the host), and the plan covers eligible damage to the RV during your trip. Roadside assistance helps with flat tires, battery boosts, lockouts, and towing if needed, ideal for first-time renters exploring rural Grey County roads. Pro tip: review the coverage tiers on the booking page and select the one that matches your comfort level, especially if you are planning longer drives toward Blue Mountain or Tobermory.
rvezy.com/insurance-and-protectionWhat happens if I need to cancel my Southgate RV rental?
Booking is low risk: RVezy sets the cancellation policy for every rental, not individual hosts, and the full terms are shown during checkout. Refund amounts depend on how far in advance you cancel, and RVezy may offer additional flexibility for qualifying events such as severe weather or natural disasters. Because Southgate sits on the Dundalk Highlands at over 480 metres elevation, that flexibility is genuinely useful in shoulder seasons. Pro tip: book early to lock in the best Class C motorhomes for summer dates in Southgate, then review the cancellation terms on your booking page so you know your options.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in Southgate?
Absolutely, many hosts offer pet-friendly RV rental in Southgate, and your four-legged co-pilot is welcome at most local campgrounds too. Use the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy to instantly see rigs that welcome dogs, then plan stops at spots like Durham Conservation Area (about 25 minutes west) and Craigleith Provincial Park, which has a dedicated pet exercise and swimming area on Georgian Bay. Some hosts add a small cleaning fee or refundable pet deposit, all shown upfront on the listing. Pro tip: message the host before booking to mention your pup's size and they'll often share their favourite local dog-friendly trails along the CP Rail Trail.
ontarioparks.ca/park/craigleithCan the RV be delivered to my campsite or cottage near Southgate?
Yes, RV delivery in Southgate is one of the most popular options on RVezy, and it's a game-changer if you're a first time renter or worried about driving a big rig on rural Grey Road 9. Many local hosts will deliver your motorhome rental in Southgate directly to Highpoint Campground in Dundalk, a private property, or a nearby cottage, then set it up, level it, connect hookups, and walk you through every system. Delivery fees are typically based on distance from the host's location. Pro tip: filter by Delivery on RVezy and message hosts about drop-off at Durham Conservation Area or Eugenia Lake for a stress-free arrival.
southgate.ca/recreation/highpoint-campground/How far can I drive, and what's the mileage policy on a Southgate RV rental?
You've got plenty of range to explore from Southgate. Most RVezy hosts include a daily kilometre allowance (commonly 100 to 200 km per day) with additional kilometres available for a small per-km fee, and some hosts offer RV rental with unlimited mileage packages, perfect for a longer RV road trip from Southgate. The exact policy is listed clearly on each listing before you book. From Dundalk you're 60 km to Blue Mountain, 80 km to Wasaga Beach, 95 km to Owen Sound, and about 160 km to Toronto. Pro tip: if you're planning the Bruce Peninsula loop (around 500 km round trip), filter for hosts with unlimited or high-allowance packages.
ontario.ca/page/driving-recreational-vehicle-rvWhere are the best campgrounds near Southgate, Ontario?
You're spoiled for choice for RV camping in Southgate and the surrounding Grey County area. Highpoint Campground at 185677 Grey Road 9 in Dundalk has 50 sites with 40 offering water and electrical hookups, all a 5-minute walk to downtown shops. Durham Conservation Area, about 25 minutes west, offers 200+ trailer and tent sites with electrical and water hookups. Craigleith Provincial Park on Georgian Bay (about 1 hour north) is a favourite for shale beaches and swimming. Saugeen Cedars Family Campground near Hanover and Bluewater Lakes Campground in Elmwood round out the top picks. Pro tip: book Ontario Parks sites 5 months in advance through the official reservation system, they fill fast for July and August.
ontarioparks.ca/reservationsWhen is the best time of year for a Southgate RV trip?
The sweet spot for RV camping in Southgate runs from late May through early October, when daytime highs average 18 to 26 degrees Celsius and Highpoint Campground is fully operational. Because Dundalk sits on the elevated Dundalk Highlands (around 1,580 feet/482 metres above sea level), summer evenings stay refreshingly cool, often dropping to 10 to 14 degrees Celsius, perfect for campfires. Fall colours peak mid-September to mid-October across the Beaver Valley and Niagara Escarpment. Winter brings heavy lake-effect snow, so most campgrounds close from late October to April. Pro tip: book early June for fewer crowds and excellent rates, or visit in late September for stunning foliage drives toward Eugenia Falls.
weather.gc.ca/en/location/index.html?coords=44.17,-80.394I've never rented an RV before. Will I be okay driving around Southgate?
You'll do great, and Southgate is honestly one of the friendliest areas in Ontario for a first time renting an RV. The roads are wide, traffic is light outside summer weekends, and your host will give you a full walkthrough at pickup covering driving, hookups, slide-outs, and dump stations. Grey Road 9 and Highway 10 through Dundalk are flat and straightforward, with no tight urban turns. If big-rig driving still feels intimidating, choose a smaller Class B campervan rental in Southgate or book delivery so the host parks it for you. Pro tip: take a short practice drive on the rural concession roads south of Dundalk before heading to Blue Mountain or Wasaga Beach.
ontario.ca/page/driving-recreational-vehicle-rvWhat if something goes wrong with the RV during my Southgate trip?
You are never alone on the road. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, covering things like flat tires, battery boosts, lockouts, and towing if needed. Your host is reachable directly through the RVezy app for questions about appliances, slide-outs, or generator quirks, and RVezy customer support is available before, during, and after your trip. Cell coverage is solid through most of Grey County along Highway 10 and Grey Road 9. Pro tip: snap a quick photo of the roadside assistance card and RV registration at pickup so the info is handy if you need it near Eugenia or the Beaver Valley.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Southgate RV rental across the border into the US?
Cross-border trips from Southgate to the United States are often possible, but you must get written approval from your host before booking, since not every RV insurance policy extends across the border. Travel to Mexico is not permitted on any RVezy rental due to insurance restrictions. From Southgate, the closest US crossing is the Blue Water Bridge at Sarnia (about 2.5 hours southwest), opening routes into Michigan. Bring your passport, vehicle registration, and a host-signed letter of permission. Pro tip: many Southgate guests skip the border on a first trip since you are within a couple of hours of Bruce Peninsula National Park and the entire southern Georgian Bay shoreline.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat about fuel costs and MPG for my Southgate RV trip?
Budgeting fuel for your RV rental in Ontario is easier than you'd think. Class B campervans typically get 18 to 22 mpg (about 11 to 13 L/100km), Class C motorhomes average 10 to 14 mpg (17 to 23 L/100km), and Class A motorhomes return 7 to 10 mpg (24 to 33 L/100km). Travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle. Gasoline in the Southgate/Dundalk area generally tracks the Ontario average, with stations along Highway 10 in Dundalk, Flesherton, and Shelburne. Pro tip: fill up in Shelburne or Orangeville before heading north, prices are often a few cents cheaper than at Blue Mountain tourist stops, saving real money on a week-long Grey County loop.
ontario.ca/page/gasoline-pricesHow far ahead should I book a campground near Southgate?
For July and August weekends, book your campground the moment reservations open. Ontario Parks releases sites at Craigleith, Earl Rowe, and other provincial parks exactly 5 months in advance through the official Ontario Parks reservation system at 7 a.m. ET, and the popular electrical sites near Georgian Bay sell out within minutes. Highpoint Campground in Dundalk is run by the Township of Southgate and is reserved by contacting the Recreation Manager directly at 519-374-3130. Private campgrounds in Grey County typically accept bookings 6 to 12 months ahead. Pro tip: shoulder-season weekends (June and September) are often bookable just 2 to 3 weeks out, perfect for a spontaneous Southgate getaway.
reservations.ontarioparks.ca/What are the driving conditions like around Southgate?
Driving around Southgate is refreshingly easy, with quiet rural roads, gentle rolling terrain, and minimal traffic outside peak summer weekends. Highway 10 is the main north-south route through Dundalk, and Grey Road 9 connects you east-west across the township. Watch for slow-moving Mennonite buggies on backroads (a charming local feature), seasonal farm equipment, and occasional deer at dawn and dusk. Winter conditions can be serious, the Dundalk Highlands receive heavy lake-effect snow from November through March, so most RV trips happen May through October. Pro tip: avoid Highway 26 toward Blue Mountain on summer Friday afternoons when GTA cottagers head north, leave by 10 a.m. for a smooth drive.
511on.ca/What amenities will I find at campgrounds near Southgate?
Local campgrounds are well-equipped for a comfortable Southgate RV trip. Highpoint Campground in Dundalk offers 50 sites with electrical hookups on all 50 and tested potable water on 40 sites, plus washrooms and a 5-minute walk to grocery and convenience stores. Durham Conservation Area has electric and water hookups, a dump station, swimming, and hiking trails. Craigleith Provincial Park provides flush toilets, showers, laundry, and a small park store. Most provincial parks have a dump station, potable water fill, and comfort stations with hot showers. Pro tip: top up fresh water before leaving Dundalk because rural fill stations can be sparse, and use the dump station at Durham Conservation Area on your way back to drop off the RV clean.
ontarioparks.ca/park/craigleith/campingWhat's typically included inside the RV I rent in Southgate?
You'll be amazed how well-equipped your motorhome rental in Southgate is. Most RVezy rentals come with a full kitchen (fridge, stove, microwave, sink), an indoor bathroom with toilet and shower, comfortable beds for 2 to 8 people depending on the RV, climate control with furnace and air conditioning, dining seating with seatbelts for travel, and propane for cooking and heat. Many include a TV, Bluetooth stereo, outdoor awning, and a generator for off-grid stays. Wi-Fi varies, some hosts include a mobile hotspot. Pro tip: cell signal is solid in Dundalk and along Highway 10, so a small travel hotspot keeps the kids streaming even on rural concession roads through Grey County.
destinationontario.com/en-ca/articles/rving-ontario-for-beginnersWhat add-ons and pickup options can I expect when I rent an RV in Southgate?
Hosts in Southgate offer plenty of helpful add-ons to customize your trip. Popular extras include bedding and linen packages ($30 to $75), kitchen kits with dishes and utensils, camping chairs and outdoor tables, BBQ grills, bike racks, generator use, and propane fills. Pickup is typically from the host's property in or near Dundalk, with delivery available for an additional fee based on distance. Mileage policies vary by listing, with daily kilometre allowances clearly shown before you book, and many hosts offer unlimited-kilometre upgrades. Pro tip: bundle the bedding kit and outdoor package if you're heading to Craigleith Provincial Park, since beachside campsites benefit from an awning, chairs, and a good cooler.
visitgrey.ca/stay/campsites-rv-sitesHow does payment and the security deposit work on an RVezy rental in Southgate?
Payment is simple and secure: you pay through the RVezy platform when you book, never directly to the host in cash. A refundable security deposit is pre-authorized on your credit card before pickup (typically a few hundred to a couple thousand dollars depending on the RV) and released after the trip once the host confirms the RV was returned in good condition. The exact deposit amount is shown clearly on each listing. Pro tip: take date-stamped photos and a short video of the RV at pickup and drop-off in Dundalk, this simple step is the easiest way to avoid any deposit disputes and keeps your refund moving quickly.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksWhat are the best road trip destinations from Southgate?
You're perfectly positioned for an unforgettable RV road trip from Southgate. Blue Mountain and Collingwood are just 60 km north (about 50 minutes) for hiking, the Scenic Caves suspension bridge, and Georgian Bay swims. Wasaga Beach, the world's longest freshwater beach, is 80 km northeast (about 1 hour 15 minutes). Owen Sound and Harrison Park sit 95 km northwest (1 hour 30 minutes). Bruce Peninsula National Park and Tobermory's grotto are 200 km north (about 2.5 hours). Algonquin Provincial Park's west gate is around 3.5 hours east. Pro tip: stop at Eugenia Falls Conservation Area, a 30-metre waterfall just 25 minutes from Dundalk, it's a local insider favourite and a perfect halfway stretch on the way to Blue Mountain.
