The area sits within a short drive of two provincial parks, a national park, and several private RV resorts, making it a practical base for exploring southern Georgian Bay. Awenda Provincial Park sits on a peninsula jutting into Georgian Bay north of Penetanguishene, with over 2,900 hectares of forested land, 31 kilometres of trails, and private and shaded campsites including sites for RVs, car camping, pet-free camping and radio-free camping. Six Mile Lake Provincial Park lies about 10 kilometres north of Port Severn, just off Highway 400, and offers seven campgrounds with a mix of electrical and non-electrical sites. For boat-access wilderness camping, Tonch Point Campground - Georgian Bay Islands National Park is on Beausoleil Island, reachable only by water. Bayfort Camp and Lafontaine RV Resort provide private-park alternatives closer to the shoreline settlements.

Six Mile Lake Provincial Park adds three sandy beaches, a boat launch, and short interconnected trails; the Living Edge Trail passes beaver lodges, and moose are frequently spotted along the Marsh Trail. Ontario Parks operates on a defined season. Six Mile Lake Provincial Park's camping season runs from early May through Thanksgiving weekend in October, and most private RV resorts in the area follow a similar May-to-October window. Awenda opens for camping from the middle of May until after the Canadian Thanksgiving weekend, though the park itself remains accessible year-round for day use and limited winter camping. July and August are the peak. Because of its proximity to Toronto, Awenda is very busy during the summer months, and midweek nights outside the July-August window offer the best odds of finding a site. Late spring and September bring cooler nights, thinner crowds, and easier reservations. Winter use at Awenda includes 17 kilometres of backcountry ski trails, and the park sits in a snow belt with generally reliable conditions for snowshoeing and cross-country skiing. Blackfly and mosquito activity peaks from late May into July.

How to book campgrounds near Tay

Provincial park sites use the Ontario Parks reservation system. Campsites can be booked up to five months in advance of the arrival date at 7:00 am ET, and reservations are available online or by phone through 1-888-ONT-PARK. Last-minute spots sometimes become available around noon each day, when campers who leave early and cancel by noon receive a full refund, freeing their sites for standby bookings. Awenda has specific length-of-stay rules: reservations are available for 7 nights only, Saturday to Saturday, from the 3rd Friday in June to Labour Day, with a 2-night minimum outside that window and a 3-night minimum on long weekends. Georgian Bay Islands National Park uses the Parks Canada Reservation Service. Reservations for camping, cabins and oTENTiks at Georgian Bay Islands launch in early February at 8:00 am ET. Private resorts such as Bayfort Camp and Lafontaine RV Resort take direct bookings through their own websites.

What to expect on-site

Provincial park sites are wooded and spaced for privacy. Sites at Awenda are shaded beneath Sugar Maples and Red Oaks and are spaced further apart than many other provincial parks. All sites in Wolf and some sites in Hawk Campground offer electrical hook-ups, and all six campgrounds are serviced by drinking water taps, vault toilets and a central comfort station with flush toilets and showers. Individual sites do not have water or sewer hookups; a sanitation station with fill taps and a trailer dump is located near the gatehouse. Awenda accommodates RVs up to about 32 feet. At Six Mile Lake, Pine and Birch campgrounds accept large equipment and offer hydro, while Maple, Oak, and Poplar are non-electrical. Beausoleil Island is a different experience: campers must coordinate their own boat transportation or book a licensed private water taxi, and cabin and oTENTik reservations include transportation to the island. Black bears, rattlesnakes, and poison ivy are present, so proper food storage and closed footwear are essential.
