Campgrounds and RV parks near Terrace Bay, ON

The Rainbow Falls trail follows a boardwalk beside the Hewitson River as it drops through a series of cascades toward Lake Superior, and a second trail leads to a panoramic view of the Superior shoreline. Whitesand Lake offers calm-water swimming and paddling, while the Rossport side opens onto rocky Lake Superior coves popular with sea kayakers. At Pukaskwa National Park, day hikers can walk the Southern Headland and Beach trails from Hattie Cove, and stronger hikers can sample the Coastal Hiking Trail, which includes a suspension bridge over the White River. Neys Provincial Park adds a sandy Lake Superior beach, the Under the Volcano and Dune trails, and the remains of a Second World War prisoner-of-war camp. Wildlife commonly seen in the region includes moose, black bear, and bald eagles.

The camping season on this stretch of the north shore is short. Rainbow Falls Provincial Park generally opens in mid-May, with the Rossport side and day-use area typically open into mid-October and the Whitesand Lake side closing earlier in the fall. Neys Provincial Park operates on a similar mid-May to mid-October schedule, and Hattie Cove Campground at Pukaskwa National Park is open from May 15 to October 14, with the North Loop closed during the spring and fall shoulder seasons and only the South Loop operating then. Spring brings cool temperatures and fog along the Lake Superior shore, along with high water at Rainbow Falls. Blackflies and mosquitoes are heaviest from early June through mid-July, especially inland. July and August are the busiest months, with the warmest water and lightest bug pressure. Autumn arrives in early September, bringing golden birch and poplar foliage, cooler nights, and stronger winds on Lake Superior. Winter closes all park campgrounds, though snowmobile and ice-fishing routes remain active on the surrounding Crown land.

Expect a remote, boreal setting. Cell coverage along Highway 17 is patchy between towns, grocery selection is limited, and the nearest full-service hubs are Thunder Bay to the west and Marathon or Wawa to the east. Fuel stops are spaced out, so topping up in Terrace Bay before a long drive day is a good habit. RV sites vary by park. Rainbow Falls and Neys offer a mix of electrical and non-electrical sites, and Hattie Cove has both electrical and non-electrical sites but no sewer hookups. Comfort stations with flush toilets and hot showers are available at all four parks during the operating season. Lake Superior water stays cold through summer, black bears are active in the region, and food storage rules apply at every campground.
