Campgrounds near Kensington, PEI
Kensington sits in central Prince Edward Island, roughly a 15-minute drive south of Malpeque Bay and about 20 minutes from Summerside. The town works well as a base for RV travellers because it puts both the North Shore beaches and the Confederation Bridge within easy reach, and campground options range from full-service private resorts to smaller provincial parks.
Cabot Beach Provincial Park, about 15 minutes north on Route 20, is the largest provincial park in western PEI and fronts Malpeque Bay with a supervised beach, playground, laundromat, showers, and a dump station. Twin Shores Camping Area, just up the road in Darnley, is a large private resort with nearly 700 sites spread across two shorelines and a full slate of family amenities.
Linkletter Provincial Park sits on Bedeque Bay about 10 minutes west of Summerside and offers a mix of unserviced, two-way, and three-way sites with a dump station. Borden / Summerside KOA Journey and Crystal Beach Campground and Cottages round out the nearby options, giving RV travellers a mix of price points and hookup levels within a short drive of Kensington.
Things to do around Kensington
The North Shore beaches are the main draw. Cabot Beach Provincial Park has supervised swimming on Malpeque Bay, a cycle pump track, playground, kitchen shelter, and interpretive programs that run through the summer. Twin Shores Camping Area offers guest access to nearly 4 km of coastline with three beaches, a general store, café, driving range, arcade, and organized daily activities.
Beyond the campgrounds, families use Kensington as a launch point for Cavendish attractions, the Anne of Green Gables sites, and Summerside's waterfront boardwalk. Linkletter Provincial Park is close to Slemon Park and about 10 minutes from downtown Summerside. Confederation Bridge is a short drive south, useful for day trips into New Brunswick.

The PEI camping season is short. Provincial parks including Cabot Beach and Linkletter typically open in early June and close in early October, with the last bookable night in early October and the park gates closing the following day. Twin Shores runs on a similar June-to-October window. Winter camping is not offered at the campgrounds in this area.
July and August are peak season. Warm water on the North Shore, long daylight hours, and full interpretive programming make these the busiest weeks, and popular sites at Cabot Beach and Twin Shores often book out well in advance. June and September are quieter, cooler, and better for RV travellers who want easier reservations, though some services and lifeguard coverage taper off after Labour Day.
Late-season storms are a real planning factor. Post-tropical systems and nor'easters can affect PEI from late August through October, occasionally forcing park closures or early departures. Check forecasts before travel and note that provincial parks refund only for official severe weather warnings.

How to book
PEI's provincial parks use a single online reservation system at peiprovincialparks.ca. Reservations open on set dates in April, with Cabot Beach Provincial Park and Linkletter Provincial Park both bookable for arrivals from early June through early October. Cancellations made more than 72 hours before the 2:00 p.m. check-in are refunded minus transaction fees; later cancellations forfeit one night plus fees.
Private campgrounds book directly. Twin Shores Camping Area opens its next-season reservations on October 1 at 9:00 a.m. Atlantic Time and requires a three-night minimum for campsites and rustic cabins, with two-night stays and cottages handled by phone. Borden / Summerside KOA Journey books through the KOA website or app, and Crystal Beach Campground and Cottages takes reservations directly through its own site.
What to expect
Sites near Kensington range from grassy unserviced pitches to full 30/50-amp hookups with water and sewer. Provincial parks like Cabot Beach and Linkletter offer a mix of unserviced, two-way, and three-way sites, along with washrooms with showers, laundromats, kitchen shelters, dump stations, and Wi-Fi. Beaches at the provincial parks are supervised only during posted lifeguard hours, so check beach reports on arrival.
Larger private resorts like Twin Shores lean toward a family-resort feel with 24-hour security, organized activities, and a general store on site. Pets are permitted on leash across all listed campgrounds. Cell coverage on the North Shore is generally reliable but can be patchy in more remote pockets near Malpeque Bay; most campgrounds provide Wi-Fi to fill the gaps.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Kensington, PE
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Kensington, PEI?
RV rental in Kensington is one of the most affordable ways to explore Prince Edward Island, with nightly rates typically ranging from $90 to $175 CAD for travel trailers and $175 to $325 CAD for Class C motorhomes. Because Kensington sits right between Cavendish and Summerside, you'll find competitive pricing from local hosts who know the area well. For a cheap RV rental Kensington travelers love, book midweek in June or September, when rates dip 15 to 25% below July and August peaks. Pro tip: use the price filter on RVezy to set your nightly budget, and message hosts about weekly discounts. Many Island hosts knock 10% off stays of five nights or more, leaving you more money for lobster suppers in New Glasgow.
tourismpei.com/pei-things-to-do/campingDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Kensington, PEI?
Good news: a regular Class 5 driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Kensington, PEI, even for larger motorhomes and fifth wheels. There's no commercial license or RV endorsement required in Prince Edward Island for standard recreational vehicles. You'll need to be 25 or older to book on RVezy, and you'll upload a photo of your license through the platform for quick ID verification. Visiting from the US, UK, Australia, or another eligible country? Your home license works for up to four months as a tourist, so you can drive straight off the Confederation Bridge and into your Kensington RV trip with zero extra paperwork.
princeedwardisland.ca/en/topic/driver-licencesWhat protection is included when I rent an RV in Kensington?
Every RV rental in Kensington comes with an RVezy renter protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance built into your booking, so you can hit the Blue Heron Coastal Drive with real peace of mind. You choose your protection level at checkout (it isn't host-defined), and the plan covers physical damage to the RV up to the plan's limits. Whether you're parked at Cabot Beach Provincial Park or driving the back roads near Malpeque Bay, help is one phone call away day or night. Pro tip: review the protection options side by side during booking and pick the level that matches your comfort, especially if it's your first time renting an RV.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat is the cancellation policy for an RV rental in Kensington, PEI?
Booking your Kensington RV trip is low-risk: RVezy sets the cancellation policy (it isn't decided by individual hosts and isn't displayed on the listing), and every reservation includes a money-back grace period right after you book. If your plans shift within that window, you can cancel without penalty. After the grace period, refunds depend on how close you are to your trip start date. If a host cancels, RVezy refunds you or issues travel credits. Pro tip: book early to lock in the best RV rental in Kensington for your dates, knowing RVezy's policy has your back.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on an RV rental in Kensington?
Absolutely, pet-friendly RV rental Kensington options are easy to find on RVezy. Just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter on the search page and you'll see hosts who happily welcome dogs (some allow cats too). Kensington is a fantastic base for pet travel: dogs are permitted on leash at Cabot Beach Provincial Park, along the Confederation Trail that runs right through town, and on many sections of PEI National Park outside peak beach hours. Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm your pet's size and breed, and ask about any cleaning fees. Pack a towel for sandy red-beach paws, you'll thank yourself later.
tourismpei.com/pet-friendly-peiCan the RV be delivered to my campsite in Kensington?
Yes, RV delivery Kensington is one of the most popular options on RVezy, and it's a game-changer if it's your first time renting an RV. Many local hosts will tow or drive the RV directly to your campsite at Cavendish Campground, Twin Shores, Cabot Beach Provincial Park, or even a private cottage rental in the Kensington area. Your host handles leveling, hookups, and a full walkthrough so you're settled in before they leave. Just use the Delivery filter when searching, then enter your destination address or campground name. Pro tip: delivery is especially handy if you're flying into Charlottetown Airport (about 45 minutes away) and don't want to drive a big rig your first day.
tourismpei.com/pei-things-to-do/campingHow far can I drive on a Kensington RV rental and what about mileage limits?
You'll have plenty of range for a classic PEI RV trip. Most Kensington hosts include 100 to 200 km per day in their base rate, and some offer RV rental with unlimited mileage, perfect since you can loop the entire island in roughly 470 km. From Kensington you're 25 minutes to Cavendish, 20 minutes to Summerside, 45 minutes to Charlottetown, and about 90 minutes to the Confederation Bridge. Every host's mileage policy is shown clearly on their listing before you book. Pro tip: if you're planning an RV road trip from Kensington over to Cape Breton (around 6 hours) or Hopewell Rocks in New Brunswick (3 hours), filter for unlimited mileage to keep costs predictable.
princeedwardisland.ca/en/information/transportation-and-infrastructureWhere are the best campgrounds near Kensington, PEI?
Kensington is surrounded by some of PEI's most loved campgrounds, all within 30 minutes. Cabot Beach Provincial Park in Malpeque offers oceanfront sites, full hookups, and a sandy beach right outside your door. Twin Shores Camping Area in Darnley has a private beach, mini-golf, and a heated pool, ideal for families. Cavendish Campground in PEI National Park puts you steps from Green Gables and the iconic Cavendish Beach. Marco Polo Land in Cavendish is another big family favourite with pools and entertainment. Pro tip: provincial park sites open for reservations on the PEI Provincial Parks system in early April, and the best oceanfront spots fill within hours for July and August weekends.
tourismpei.com/pei-things-to-do/campingWhen is the best time to visit Kensington in an RV?
The sweet spot for RV camping Kensington is late June through early September, when daytime highs sit between 20 and 26 degrees Celsius and the Atlantic warms up enough for swimming at Cabot Beach. July and August bring the busiest campgrounds, festivals like the Kensington Harvest Festival, and every lobster shack in full swing. For fewer crowds and lower rates, late May, early June, and the first three weeks of September are gorgeous, crisp mornings, warm afternoons, and fall colours start lighting up the Confederation Trail by late September. Pro tip: shoulder season also means easier same-week campground bookings, so you can be more spontaneous about which corner of the Island to explore.
climate.weather.gc.ca/climate_normals/results_1991_2020_e.htmlI've never driven an RV before. Is Kensington a good place to start?
Kensington is honestly one of the friendliest spots in Canada for first time renting an RV. PEI roads are flat, well-maintained, and rarely congested outside of downtown Charlottetown. Your host gives you a complete walkthrough at pickup, covering everything from leveling jacks to the propane fridge, and they're a text away during your trip. Local routes like the Blue Heron Coastal Drive offer wide shoulders and slow speeds, perfect for finding your confidence. Pro tip: ease in with a short first-day drive from Kensington to Cabot Beach (about 15 minutes), set up at your site, then build up to bigger loops like the North Cape Coastal Drive the next day.
princeedwardisland.ca/en/feature/road-safetyWhat happens if I have a problem on the road during my PEI RV trip?
You're never on your own. Every RV rental in Kensington PEI includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the RVezy protection plan, covering flat tires, battery boosts, lockouts, and towing. If something mechanical pops up, one phone call gets help dispatched, often from Summerside or Charlottetown service providers who know the Island. Your host is also a direct contact through RVezy messaging for quick questions like how to reset the inverter, and RVezy customer support is available before, during, and after your trip. Pro tip: save the roadside assistance number to your phone before you leave the driveway, and snap a photo of your campsite's address for faster dispatch if needed.
rvezy.com/insurance-and-protectionCan I take my Kensington RV rental off the Island to New Brunswick or Nova Scotia?
Yes, most Kensington hosts allow travel across the Confederation Bridge to New Brunswick and via the Wood Islands ferry to Nova Scotia, making for an unforgettable Maritime road trip. From Kensington you can reach Moncton and the Hopewell Rocks in about 3 hours, Halifax in around 4 hours, and Cape Breton's Cabot Trail in roughly 6 hours. Confirm cross-border travel with your host through RVezy messaging before booking so they can approve your route. Travel into the US may be allowed with host approval, while travel to Mexico is not permitted due to insurance coverage limits. Pro tip: the Confederation Bridge toll is paid only when leaving PEI, so build that into your fuel budget.
confederationbridge.com/visitor-information/tolls/What's the realistic fuel budget for an RV road trip from Kensington?
PEI's compact size keeps fuel costs refreshingly low. Most motorhomes average 18 to 25 litres per 100 km, and gas in Kensington typically runs around $1.55 to $1.75 per litre (regulated weekly by the Island Regulatory and Appeals Commission). For a classic 5-day Island loop covering about 500 km, expect to spend roughly $130 to $200 CAD on fuel. Travel trailers paired with a tow vehicle tend to come in even cheaper. There are gas stations right in Kensington on Route 2, plus convenient stops in Summerside, Cavendish, and Charlottetown. Pro tip: fill up in Summerside or Charlottetown where stations are slightly cheaper, and check IRAC's posted weekly max price before topping off.
irac.pe.ca/petroleum/current-prices/How far in advance should I book a campground near Kensington?
For July and August stays, book PEI Provincial Park campgrounds the moment reservations open in early April through the official Prince Edward Island camping reservation system. Cabot Beach and Cavendish sites for long weekends often sell out within the first day. Private campgrounds like Twin Shores and Marco Polo Land usually open bookings even earlier (January or February) and accept reservations directly on their websites. For shoulder-season trips in June or September, two to four weeks ahead is usually plenty. Pro tip: book your RVezy rental first, then your campground, that way you'll know your exact RV length, which matters because some sites near Kensington cap at 30 feet.
tourismpei.com/pei-things-to-do/campingWhat are the driving conditions like around Kensington?
Driving a motorhome rental Kensington is genuinely relaxing. Route 2 runs right through town and is a wide, well-paved highway connecting you to Summerside (20 min west) and Charlottetown (45 min east). Country roads toward Malpeque and Cabot Beach are narrower with the occasional tractor in summer, just slow down and enjoy the view. PEI has no mountains or steep grades, so you won't sweat any climbs. Watch for cyclists on coastal routes and check height clearance on a few older covered structures near historic villages. Winter brings snow and ice from December to March, so most RVing happens May through October. Pro tip: the rotary at the Kensington railyard area is your main landmark, take it slow if towing a fifth wheel.
princeedwardisland.ca/en/information/transportation-and-infrastructure/highway-conditionsWhat amenities can I expect at campgrounds near Kensington?
PEI campgrounds are well-equipped and easy to navigate. Cabot Beach Provincial Park offers two-way (water and electric) sites, a dump station, free hot showers, laundry, and a playground. Twin Shores Camping Area includes full hookups, a heated pool, mini-golf, laundry, and a general store. Cavendish Campground has electric and water hookups, dump stations, and showers throughout PEI National Park. Most parks in the Kensington area have potable water fills at the entrance and clearly marked sani-dump stations. Pro tip: PEI's tap water is famously clean (sourced from groundwater across the Island), so filling your fresh tank at Cabot Beach or Cavendish is worry-free, no extra filters needed.
tourismpei.com/pei-things-to-do/campingWhat equipment and amenities come with a Kensington RV rental?
Your campervan rental Kensington or motorhome will arrive ready to roll. Expect a fully stocked kitchen with fridge, propane stove, microwave, sink, and cookware; a bathroom with toilet and shower (in most Class B, C, and larger units); comfortable sleeping arrangements for 2 to 8 people depending on size; air conditioning and propane furnace; and seatbelts for safe travel positions. Many Island hosts also include outdoor chairs, a BBQ, levelling blocks, bedding, and basic kitchen kits. WiFi and TV vary by listing, and some include a generator for off-grid stays. Pro tip: check the listing's amenities section carefully and message the host about any must-haves like a French press or extra bedding, PEI hosts are known for going above and beyond.
tourismpei.com/pei-things-to-do/campingWhat add-ons and pickup options should I know about?
Kensington hosts offer some genuinely useful add-ons that make your trip smoother. Common options include bedding and linen packages ($25 to $60), kitchen kits ($25 to $50), camp chairs and outdoor mats, generators for boondocking, bike racks, and even kayaks or paddleboards for Malpeque Bay. Delivery to nearby campgrounds like Cabot Beach or Twin Shores typically runs $1 to $3 per km from the host's location, with setup included. Pickup is usually from the host's driveway in or near Kensington, with a 45 to 60 minute walkthrough. Mileage allowances are listed clearly on each listing. Pro tip: bundle delivery, setup, and a bedding package if you're flying in, you can step off the plane and into vacation mode within hours.
tourismpei.com/pei-things-to-do/campingHow does payment and the security deposit work?
Payment is simple and secure through RVezy: you pay online by credit card when you book, so there's no awkward exchange at pickup. A refundable security deposit (typically a few hundred to a couple thousand dollars depending on the RV) is pre-authorized on your card before your trip and released after a successful return, separate from your booking payment. The deposit protects against damage beyond what your protection plan covers. To avoid any issues, do a walkaround with your Kensington host at pickup and dropoff and snap photos of the exterior, interior, and odometer. Pro tip: return the RV clean and with the propane and fresh tanks at the level your host specified, that's the easiest way to get your full deposit back fast.
