Rickwood Caverns State Park features the Fossil Mountain Hiking Trail, named for leaf and seashell imprints visible in some of the rocks, and an Olympic-size swimming pool fed by water from the cave. Guided cave tours descend into the limestone caverns, and gemstone mining outside the gift shop appeals to kids. Oak Mountain State Park boasts extensive recreational facilities including hiking and mountain biking trails, lakes for swimming, fishing, kayaking, canoeing, and paddle boating, plus an aviary rehabilitation center, BMX area, horse riding facilities, golf course, and an amphitheater that hosts concerts. The Alabama Wildlife Center on site rehabilitates and releases native birds each year, and the park has approximately 25 miles of hiking trails that suit a range of abilities.

Spring and fall bring the most comfortable camping weather in the Birmingham area, with mild days and cool nights ideal for hiking and cave tours. RV sites and tent spaces can fill up quickly at Rickwood Caverns, particularly during spring and summer. Weekends and holidays draw the heaviest traffic, so booking well ahead is important. Summer is hot and humid, with frequent afternoon thunderstorms. When the heat of an Alabama summer sets in, the underground caverns at Rickwood offer a cool retreat, holding a constant temperature in the upper 50s to low 60s Fahrenheit. Oak Mountain's Beaver Lake beach and swimming areas are peak draws during these months. Bathhouse showers at Rickwood are seasonal and closed November through February, though restrooms and the dump station remain available. Winter is generally mild but wet, with occasional freezing nights. Central Alabama sits in an active tornado corridor, with severe-weather peaks in spring and a secondary uptick in late fall, so RV travelers should monitor NWS Birmingham alerts and know their campground's shelter plan.
