Campgrounds and RV parks near Addison, AL

Smith Lake is the main draw. It is known as the deepest lake in Alabama, with clear, cool water used for bass and striped bass fishing, kayaking, paddleboarding, wakeboarding, and swimming from the many rocky coves. Parks such as Arrowhead RV Resort at Smith Lake and Jay Landings Marina and RV Park provide direct water access, boat slips, and launches. A short drive west leads into the William B. Bankhead National Forest and the Sipsey Wilderness, home to one of the largest tracts of old-growth hardwood in the Southeast and to Alabama's largest tree. Hikers use it for waterfall trails and Sipsey Fork day loops. For town errands and family stops, Cullman offers Ave Maria Grotto, Clarkson Covered Bridge, Smith Lake Park, and a historic downtown. Cullman Campground and Quail Creek RV Resort work well as a home base for these in-town outings.

Peak season around Addison runs from late spring through early fall, driven by Smith Lake boating and warm-water swimming. Lakeside sites at Arrowhead RV Resort at Smith Lake, Hidden Cove RV Resort, and Jay Landings Marina and RV Park book up earliest, and holiday weekends often fill several weeks in advance. Summer humidity is high, and afternoon thunderstorms are routine. Spring and fall are the most comfortable stretches for RV travel. Temperatures are mild, insect pressure is lighter, and fall color in Bankhead National Forest generally peaks from late October into mid-November. Spring brings frequent rainfall and an active severe-weather window across north Alabama, so travelers should monitor National Weather Service alerts for tornadoes. Winters are cool but generally mild, with occasional freezes and rare snow. Some private parks reduce services or close portions of their loops in the coldest weeks, and lake activities slow considerably, though fishing continues year-round. Federal campgrounds in Bankhead National Forest typically operate from mid-March through late October.

Roads into lakeside parks around Smith Lake are often narrow and winding, with steep grades close to the shore. Larger Class A rigs should call ahead to confirm site length, turning radius, and low-hanging tree clearance, especially at Arrowhead RV Resort at Smith Lake and Hidden Cove RV Resort. Full hookups with 30- and 50-amp service are standard at the private resorts listed. Cell coverage is generally solid on major carriers near Cullman and along I-65 but can drop inside Bankhead National Forest and in some Smith Lake coves. Expect heavy tree cover, red-clay soil that gets slick after rain, and abundant wildlife including deer and raccoons in forested areas. Note that Winston and Cullman counties are dry, so alcohol is not sold locally. Pack insect repellent for mosquitoes and ticks, particularly in spring and summer.
