Camping near Alexandria, Alabama
Alexandria is an unincorporated community in Calhoun County, Alabama, roughly ten minutes north of Anniston and about an hour east of Birmingham on U.S. Highway 431. The area sits at the southern edge of the Appalachian foothills, with Choccolocco Mountain and the Talladega National Forest to the south and Neely Henry Lake on the Coosa River to the west. RV travelers typically use Alexandria as a base for exploring both the mountains and the lake.
Campground options in the surrounding corridor range from lakeside parks to full-service RV resorts. The 2,799-acre Cheaha State Park sits within the Talladega National Forest and offers extensive hiking trails, about 45 minutes south of town. Closer in, Scenic Drive RV Park and Campground, Greensport RV Park and Campground on the Coosa, River Rocks Landing, and the Talladega-area properties Talladega Pit Stop RV Park and Campground and GrandStand RV Park - Talladega Alabama serve travelers heading to the speedway or the forest.
Coosa River access, Pinhoti Trail trailheads, and Talladega Superspeedway are all within short driving distance.
Things to do around Alexandria
The Talladega National Forest is the region's main outdoor draw. Hikers use trailheads for the Pinhoti and Chinnabee Silent trails, and Cheaha State Park holds the summit of Alabama's highest point at 2,407 feet elevation, with sweeping views over the Talladega National Forest. Pulpit Rock, Bald Rock, and Cheaha Lake are the most-visited stops.
On the water, Neely Henry Lake and the Coosa River offer bass fishing, boating, and kayaking, with public ramps near Greensport RV Park and Campground and River Rocks Landing. Motorsports fans plan trips around Talladega Superspeedway events, using GrandStand RV Park - Talladega Alabama or Talladega Pit Stop RV Park and Campground for race-weekend stays.
Anniston itself has the Berman Museum, the Anniston Museum of Natural History, and Coldwater Mountain, which has a large network of purpose-built mountain-bike trails.

Northeast Alabama has a humid subtropical climate with four distinct seasons. Spring and fall are the most comfortable periods for RV travel, with mild days, cool nights, and lower humidity. Fall color on Cheaha Mountain typically peaks from late October into mid-November and brings a noticeable surge in weekend traffic.
Summer is hot and humid, with frequent afternoon thunderstorms. Lake sites and shaded forest campgrounds book well ahead, and a three-night minimum stay is required on Talladega race weekends and all holidays at Cheaha State Park, so plan around the NASCAR calendar in the spring and fall.
Winter is mild by North American standards but can bring freezing nights at elevation. Cheaha's improved campgrounds are open year-round, though services can be reduced in the coldest months. Some primitive loops and forest service sites in the Talladega district reduce services in the off-season, so confirm hookups and water availability before booking a cold-weather trip.
How to book campgrounds near Alexandria
Alabama State Parks use a single online reservation system at reserve.alapark.com, which covers Cheaha State Park. Advanced reservations may be made up to one year in advance, and the maximum stay is 14 nights, or 31 nights from November 1 to March 31 at select parks. A non-refundable reservation fee applies per site, campground check-in is 2 PM, and check-out is 11 AM. A two-night minimum applies on weekends and a three-night minimum on Talladega race weekends and holidays.
Private parks near Alexandria, including Scenic Drive RV Park and Campground, Greensport RV Park and Campground, Talladega Pit Stop RV Park and Campground, River Rocks Landing, and GrandStand RV Park - Talladega Alabama, take reservations directly by phone or through their own websites. Race weekends at Talladega sell out months in advance, so lock in dates as soon as the NASCAR schedule is published.
What to expect on the ground
Private RV parks in the Alexandria and Talladega corridor generally offer full hookups with 20/30/50-amp service, gravel or paved pads, and Wi-Fi of variable quality. Sites at lakeside parks tend to be closer together, while forest-adjacent parks feel more spread out. Cell coverage is reliable near I-20 and thins out on the ridges.
At Cheaha State Park, campers can choose from 77 full-hookup sites, 26 primitive sites, 28 rustic tent sites, a primitive group campground, and safari-tent glamping. Full-hookup sites include water, sewer, and 20/30/50-amp electric plus bathhouse access, while primitive areas have shared water spigots and rely on shower passes from the Mountain Store.
Roads to the summit are paved, but the scenic Cheaha Road through the forest is not recommended by the park for large recreational vehicles.

They'll level the rig, connect water and 30/50-amp power, extend the slides, and walk you through every system before they leave. Filter listings by Delivery to see hosts offering this near you. weather.gov/bmx/I've never rented an RV before. Will I get help figuring it out?
Yes, and you're going to do great. Every RVezy host gives you a hands-on orientation at pickup that walks you through driving the rig, hooking up at a campground, using the awning and slides, operating the propane stove, and dumping the tanks. You can also message your host any time during your trip if a question pops up at the campsite. If it's your first time renting an RV, look for a Class C motorhome or a 20 to 25-foot travel trailer, which handle easily on roads like US-431 and AL-21 around Alexandria. Pro tip: ask your host for a quick parking lot practice before you head out.

help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat are the best road trips from Alexandria, AL?
An RV road trip from Alexandria opens up some of the South's best scenery. Head about 35 minutes south on the Talladega Scenic Drive (Highway 281) to Cheaha State Park for Alabama's highest peak. Drive about 100 miles east to Atlanta, GA for the Georgia Aquarium and Stone Mountain. Aim about 140 miles north for Chattanooga, TN's Lookout Mountain and the Tennessee Aquarium. The Chief Ladiga Trail in Piedmont (just 30 minutes north) connects into Georgia's Silver Comet for serious cyclists. For a bigger loop, head about 320 miles south to Gulf Shores' white-sand beaches. Cross-border travel into Georgia, Tennessee, and Florida is allowed; travel to Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals.
alapark.com/parks/cheaha-state-parkWhat kind of gas mileage should I budget for my Alexandria RV trip?
Budgeting fuel is simple once you know your rig. Class B campervans average 18 to 22 miles per gallon (MPG), Class C motorhomes get 10 to 14 MPG, travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle (usually 10 to 14 MPG combined), and Class A coaches run 7 to 10 MPG. Alabama gas prices typically run below the national average, and you'll find plenty of stations along I-20 and US-431 right in Alexandria. For a weekend trip to Cheaha and back (roughly 80 miles round trip), expect to spend $30 to $60 in fuel for most rigs. Pro tip: fill up in Oxford before heading deep into Talladega National Forest, where stations are sparse.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Alexandria?
For the best campgrounds near Alexandria, plan to book early. Cheaha State Park accepts reservations up to one year in advance through the Alabama State Parks reservation site, and weekends from April through October, plus NASCAR race weekends at Talladega Superspeedway, sell out months ahead. Talladega National Forest sites at Coleman Lake and Pine Glen are reservable on Recreation.gov, typically 4 to 6 months ahead for prime weekends. For weekday or winter stays, you can often grab a spot just a week out. Pro tip: if Cheaha is full, check Lake Lurleen or DeSoto State Park as solid backups.
recreation.gov/camping/campgrounds/234538What are driving conditions like around Alexandria, AL?
Driving an RV around Alexandria is genuinely easy, even for first-timers. US-431, AL-21, and I-20 are wide, well-maintained, and handle big rigs comfortably. The Talladega Scenic Drive (Highway 281) up to Cheaha is the recommended RV route to the summit because it's wide and well-graded, while Cheaha Road (County Road 42) from Munford is narrow and twisty and is best avoided in larger motorhomes. Watch for afternoon thunderstorms in summer, especially June through August, and occasional fog on mountain roads at dawn. Traffic spikes dramatically on Talladega race weekends, so plan extra time. Otherwise, expect relaxed Alabama back-road driving with great views.
algotraffic.com/What amenities do campgrounds near Alexandria offer?
Most full-service campgrounds in the Alexandria area are well-equipped for a comfortable stay. Cheaha State Park's Mountain Top and Cheaha Lake campgrounds offer full-hookup sites with water, 20/30/50-amp electric, and sewer, plus bathhouses with hot showers and a dump station for those camping at primitive sites. Coldwater Creek RV Park in Anniston has full hookups, Wi-Fi, and laundry. Talladega National Forest sites at Coleman Lake have water and electric but no sewer, so plan a dump-station stop on your way home. Most private parks accept dump-station day use for around $10 to $15 if you need to empty tanks before returning your RV.
alapark.com/parks/cheaha-state-park/campgroundsWhat features should I expect in my Alexandria RV rental?

Delivery and setup to nearby campgrounds like Cheaha State Park is widely offered, with fees based on round-trip miles from the host's location. Pickup is usually from the host's driveway in Alexandria, Anniston, or Oxford. rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Alexandria%2C%20AlabamaHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is straightforward and fully handled inside the RVezy platform, so you never hand cash to a host. You pay your booking total securely by credit card at checkout, and a refundable security deposit (typically $500 to $1,500 depending on the RV) is pre-authorized on your card shortly before your trip starts, separate from your booking total. The deposit isn't charged unless there's damage or a policy issue at return, and it's released back to you after the host confirms the RV came back in good shape. To avoid surprises, take time-stamped photos of the RV at pickup and dropoff and follow the host's fuel and dump-tank instructions exactly.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksLocal insider tip: what's the one thing I shouldn't miss near Alexandria?
Here's a local insider tip most first-time visitors miss: drive the Talladega Scenic Byway (AL-281) just before sunset and stop at Bald Rock Boardwalk inside Cheaha State Park. The accessible boardwalk leads to a granite overlook at about 2,400 feet where you can watch the sun drop over the Talladega National Forest, often above the clouds. It's free with park admission and perfect after a day exploring Alexandria. Pair it with dinner at the historic Cheaha Restaurant on the summit, then head back to your RV at Mountain Top Campground. For a family RV trip Alexandria visitors rave about, this single evening usually becomes the highlight of the whole week.
