Camping near Allgood, Alabama
Allgood sits in Blount County in north-central Alabama, on the Appalachian foothills roughly a half hour north of Birmingham and within easy driving distance of the Coosa River and Neely Henry Lake. The setting mixes wooded ridges, sandstone bluffs, and lake shoreline, giving RV travelers a compact base for cave tours, bouldering, tubing, and lake fishing without long transit days between stops.
Options close to town range from state-run to private and rustic. Rickwood Caverns State Park provides 13 developed campsites, 9 of which are landscaped and can accommodate trailers and motor homes of any size, with restrooms, seasonal showers, and a dump station. Greensport RV Park & Campground sits at Historic Greensport on Neely Henry Lake in Ashville, with full hook-ups and 30/50 amp electric, water, and sewer at every site. Horse Pens 40 is a historic nature park atop Chandler Mountain offering primitive camping, rustic cabins, a limited number of RV hookups with 30 amp electric and water, clean bathhouses, and hot water showers.
Bigs Wills Creek Campground in Attalla adds creekside RV and tent sites with power and water. Carson Village Moblie Home and RV Park rounds out the choices with basic hookup sites for travelers wanting a straightforward overnight stop.
Things to do near Allgood
The signature draw is underground. Rickwood Caverns State Park runs guided tours through a cave system holding 260-million-year-old formations, with an Olympic-sized pool fed by cavern waters, short trails including the Fossil Mountain route, and swimming and picnic areas. Tours can sell out, so reservations are recommended.
Above ground, Horse Pens 40 sits atop Chandler Mountain and is one of the most concentrated boulder fields in the world, with sandstone slopers, water grooves, and problems ranging from beginner to elite. Fall, winter, and early spring are when the slopers are stickiest.
Greensport RV Park & Campground offers a swimming pool, playground, and boat ramp for lake access, with fishing, boating, hiking, and birdwatching on Neely Henry Lake. Bigs Wills Creek Campground offers creek access for tubing on warm days.

Spring travelers should watch forecasts closely, as severe thunderstorms and tornadoes are a known regional hazard.

How to book
State park sites go through the Alabama State Parks reservation portal at reserve.alapark.com. Alabama residents may book up to 13 months in advance, and out-of-state visitors up to 12 months in advance. A non-refundable reservation fee applies, weekend reservations require a two-night minimum, and holidays require a three-night minimum. Check-in is 2 PM.
Private parks book direct. Greensport RV Park & Campground and Bigs Wills Creek Campground take reservations by phone or their websites, and both fill on summer weekends and around holidays. Horse Pens 40 is transitioning to pre-paid reservation camping, so call ahead before arrival.
For summer weekends, booking six to eight weeks out is prudent. Cave tours at Rickwood should be reserved separately from the campsite.
What to expect
Sites vary widely in size and privacy. Campsites at Rickwood are relatively close together with limited privacy, and there are no sewer hookups at individual sites, though a dump station is available. Sites are well maintained, each with a picnic table and fire ring.
Greensport RV Park & Campground delivers a more traditional RV park layout with waterfront sites on Neely Henry Lake. The property has grown over time and offers full hook-ups, pool, dog park, and a marina, though some campers note sites in the lower area can feel close together.
A few practical notes: no glass and no pets outside vehicles are allowed at Horse Pens 40, and the park enforces strict Leave No Trace rules. Cave floors at Rickwood can be slippery and uneven, and a light jacket is useful for the constant 58 to 60 degree cave temperature. Cell coverage is spotty on Chandler Mountain, so download maps before arriving.
