Camping near Anniston, Alabama
Anniston sits in the Appalachian foothills of east-central Alabama, roughly halfway between Birmingham and Atlanta. The area gives RV travelers a compact base for mountain camping, mountain-bike trails, and NASCAR weekends at nearby Talladega Superspeedway. Elevations rise quickly to the south and east, where Cheaha Mountain tops out as the highest point in the state.
Most RV-friendly campgrounds cluster in two zones. Immediately around Anniston and Oxford, private parks such as Scenic Drive RV Park and Campground serve travelers who want quick access to town. Southwest toward Lincoln and Talladega, GrandStand RV Park - Talladega Alabama, Talladega Creekside Resort, and Talladega Pit Stop RV Park and Campground cater to race fans and long-haul travelers on the I-20 corridor.
For a more scenic, forested stay, Cheaha State Park sits about 45 minutes south of Anniston inside the Talladega National Forest, with full-hookup RV sites, primitive tent sites, and cabins on the mountain.
Things to do around Anniston
Outdoor activity anchors most itineraries. The Coldwater Mountain Bike Trail carries more than 35 miles of purpose-built singletrack on Forever Wild Land Trust property between Anniston and Oxford, with beginner loops and steeper gravity lines. Mountain Longleaf National Wildlife Refuge protects roughly 9,000 acres on Choccolocco Mountain and offers more than 18 miles of hiking, birdwatching, and photography trails on the former Fort McClellan grounds.
Cheaha State Park adds an observation tower at the summit, Cheaha Lake for swimming, and access to the Pinhoti Trail. In town, families can combine the Anniston Museum of Natural History, the Berman Museum, and the Longleaf Botanical Gardens on a single stop.
Race fans time trips to Talladega Superspeedway, which hosts the spring GEICO 500 and the fall YellaWood 500 Cup Series weekends.

Spring and fall are the strongest windows. From mid-March through May and again from mid-September through November, days are warm, humidity drops, and mountain views are clearest. Fall foliage on Cheaha Mountain typically peaks in late October and early November, drawing weekend crowds to the state park.
Summers are long, hot, and humid, with highs commonly near 90°F and afternoon thunderstorms. Full-hookup sites with 50-amp service are worth prioritizing so air conditioning can run through the afternoon. Biting insects are active from late spring into early fall.
Winters are short and cool rather than harsh. Cheaha State Park stays open year-round, though the lake area is winterized from November through March, with no water or restrooms in that section during those months. The biggest seasonal squeeze on campground supply is not weather: it is race weekends at Talladega, when parks for many miles around fill months ahead.
How to book
Cheaha State Park takes reservations through the Alabama State Parks system at alapark.com. Out-of-state visitors can book up to 12 months in advance, while Alabama residents get an early booking window of 13 months. Full payment is required at the time of reservation, and peak fall-foliage dates at Cheaha have been known to sell out within hours of opening. Reservation questions can be directed to the park's Mountain Store.
Private parks around Anniston, Oxford, and Lincoln each run their own reservation systems and cancellation rules, so confirm directly with the operator. For any trip that overlaps the spring or fall NASCAR weekends at Talladega Superspeedway, book several months out; premium infield and Boulevard RV spots typically go earlier than that.
What to expect on arrival
Private RV parks near Anniston generally offer full hookups with 30- and 50-amp service, pull-through sites, laundry, and Wi-Fi of varying quality in the hilly terrain. Cellular coverage is reliable in town and along I-20 but thins out on the mountain and inside the national forest.
At Cheaha State Park, campers receive a gate code by email and are welcome to set up first, then complete check-in at the Mountain Store, which also issues the required vehicle and post passes. Primitive campgrounds at Cheaha do not include bathhouse or shower access, though shower passes can be purchased at the Mountain Store.
Roads up to Cheaha are paved but steep and winding, so slower rigs should plan extra time and use low gears on the descent. Stock up on groceries and propane in Oxford or Anniston before heading into the forest.

alapark.com/parks/cheaha-state-parkCan the RV be delivered to my campsite in Anniston?
Yes, RV delivery in Anniston is one of the most popular options on RVezy, especially for first-timers who'd rather skip the driving altogether. Many local hosts will tow a travel trailer straight to Cheaha State Park's Upper Improved Campground, Scenic Drive RV Park, or a private property near Lake Logan Martin, then level it, hook up power and water, and walk you through every system before they leave. Delivery fees are usually based on mileage from the host's location, and you'll see the option listed right on the listing page. It's the closest thing to a turnkey cabin in the woods, just with wheels and a full kitchen.

Each host sets their own mileage policy, you'll see it clearly on the listing, so plan your loop and pick the rig that matches your plans.
fhwa.dot.gov/planning/national_highway_system/interstate_highway_system/Where are the best campgrounds near Anniston, AL?
You have great options for RV camping near Anniston. Top picks include Cheaha State Park's Improved Campground on Alabama's highest peak, with hookup sites and sunset views from Bald Rock; Coleman Lake Recreation Area in the Talladega National Forest for a quieter lakeside experience with electric sites; and private parks just off I-20 in Oxford that are convenient for big rigs with 30/50 amp hookups, WiFi, and laundry. Pro tip: reserve Cheaha months ahead for October weekends when fall color peaks across the Talladega ridgeline, and check Recreation.gov for national forest sites.
alapark.com/parks/cheaha-state-parkWhen is the best time of year for an Anniston RV trip?
Anniston is a true three-and-a-half-season RV destination thanks to its mild Alabama foothills climate. The sweet spots are mid-March through May, when temperatures hit a comfortable 65 to 78 degrees Fahrenheit and dogwoods bloom across the Talladega National Forest, and mid-September through early November, when fall color peaks on Mount Cheaha and humidity drops. Summer (June to August) runs hot and humid, often 88 to 92 degrees, but the higher elevation at Cheaha stays noticeably cooler. Winter is mild with highs in the 50s, perfect for hiking the Pinhoti Trail without the bugs. Pro tip: book your RV rental in Alabama for the third weekend in October for the best leaf-peeping window.
weather.gov/bmx/I've never driven an RV before. Is renting in Anniston a good idea?
Yes, first time renting an RV in Anniston is a smart, low-stress choice. Every RVezy host gives you a full walkthrough at pickup, covering propane, water, slide-outs, leveling, and dumping, so you leave feeling confident. Anniston's terrain helps too: Interstate 20 runs flat and straight through town, and most local campgrounds are an easy drive on AL-21 or US-431 with wide lanes and gentle curves. If the climb up AL-281 to Cheaha's summit feels intimidating, choose a smaller Class C motorhome or campervan, or simply opt for delivery and let the host handle the drive. You'll have 24/7 roadside backup the whole trip.
dot.state.al.us/What happens if the RV breaks down during my trip?
You are never on your own. Every RVezy booking in Anniston includes 24/7 roadside assistance with the protection plan, so a flat tire on AL-281, a dead battery at Pine Glen Recreation Area, or a tow on I-20 is one phone call away. You also have direct contact with your host, who knows the rig and can often troubleshoot quirks like the water pump or generator over the phone. RVezy support is reachable before, during, and after your trip. Pro tip: snap photos of fluid levels and tire pressure during your walkthrough so any later issue is documented and resolved quickly.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityCan I take my Anniston RV rental into Georgia, Tennessee, or other states?
Yes, interstate travel is totally allowed on most RVezy rentals from Anniston, and it's one of the best parts of the location. From Anniston you're 95 miles to Atlanta, 150 miles to Chattanooga and the Tennessee River, 180 miles to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park gateway at Townsend, TN, and an easy day's drive to Gulf Shores. Each host sets their own out-of-state policy, so just check the listing or message the host to confirm. Heads up: travel into Mexico is not permitted on any RVezy rental due to insurance coverage limits, so keep your road trip stateside. Most hosts happily wave you off on multi-state adventures.
travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/international-travel/International-Travel-Country-Information-Pages/Mexico.htmlWhat's the fuel budget for an RV trip from Anniston?
Fuel is easier on the wallet in Alabama than most states. Gas prices around Anniston typically run 20 to 30 cents below the national average, with stations clustered along I-20 exits 185 (Oxford) and 188 (Anniston). For mileage, expect a Class B campervan to get 18 to 22 MPG, a Class C motorhome 8 to 12 MPG, a Class A coach 6 to 9 MPG, and a tow setup with a half-ton truck pulling a travel trailer around 10 to 13 MPG. A weekend round-trip to Cheaha State Park (about 50 miles) burns under $25 in fuel even in a big rig. Pro tip: fill up in Oxford before heading up Highway 281; the mountain has no fuel stations.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far ahead should I book a campground near Anniston?
Booking ahead is the move, especially for Cheaha State Park, which is the crown jewel of the area and fills up fast. Reserve Cheaha's Upper Improved Campground through the Alabama State Parks reservation system at alapark.com, ideally 3 to 6 months out for peak fall weekends (October) and spring weekends (April), and 2 to 4 weeks ahead for summer. Talladega National Forest sites at Coleman Lake and Pine Glen book through Recreation.gov, also 2 to 3 months ahead in season. Private parks like Scenic Drive RV Park usually have more last-minute availability. Pro tip: midweek arrivals (Sunday to Wednesday) almost always have openings, even in peak season.
recreation.gov/What are the driving conditions like around Anniston?
Driving an RV around Anniston is pleasantly manageable. Interstate 20 is the main artery, four lanes, flat, and easy to navigate, connecting you straight to Birmingham and Atlanta. In-town routes like US-431 and AL-21 are wide and RV-friendly. The one stretch to plan for is AL-281 (the Talladega Scenic Drive) climbing 2,000 feet up to Cheaha summit: it's paved and well-maintained, but it's curvy and steep, so take it slow in lower gears. Summer afternoon thunderstorms are common from June through August, just pull off and wait them out. Pro tip: avoid I-20 westbound on Sunday evenings during Talladega Superspeedway race weekends in April and October when traffic backs up significantly.
algotraffic.com/What amenities will I find at Anniston-area campgrounds?
You'll be comfortable. Most developed campgrounds near Anniston offer 30 and 50 amp electric hookups, water, sewer at full-hookup sites, picnic tables, fire rings, and bathhouses with hot showers. Cheaha State Park's Upper Improved Campground has full hookups, a camp store, and access to the swimming pool, restaurant, and Bald Rock Lodge. Scenic Drive RV Park includes WiFi, laundry, and a dump station. For dumping and freshwater fills between stops, the Pilot Travel Center at Oxford (I-20 Exit 185) has an RV dump, and Cheaha State Park has a public dump station near the camp entrance. Talladega National Forest sites are more primitive, expect vault toilets and no hookups.

alabama.travel/How do payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is simple and secure, handled entirely through the RVezy platform with no cash or e-transfers to the host. You pay a portion at booking to confirm your Anniston RV rental, with the balance charged before your trip start date. A refundable security deposit is held on your credit card before pickup, typically a few hundred to a couple thousand dollars depending on the rig, and released after the trip once the host confirms the RV was returned in good condition and within mileage limits. To avoid hold-ups: do a thorough walkthrough at pickup, photograph the interior and exterior, and return the RV clean with the same fuel and propane levels.
