Campgrounds and RV parks near Ariton, AL

Blue Springs State Park is the anchor attraction. Clear underground springs pump 3,600 gallons of water per minute into two concrete-ringed octagonal swimming pools and then flow out into the Choctawhatchee River, with pool temperatures holding a constant 68 degrees year round. The park is also home to the 2.1-mile Magnolia Trail, an easy to slightly moderate hike through southeast Alabama forest with scenic views of the west fork of the Choctawhatchee River. A small fishing pond is stocked with catfish, bass, and bream, and an Alabama fishing license is required. Off-road enthusiasts head to Bama Slam and the nearby Alabama Mud Park for ATV and dirt bike trails across hundreds of wooded acres. Ozark and Troy offer basic groceries, restaurants, and hardware within a 20 to 30 minute drive, and the U.S. Army Aviation Museum at Fort Novosel is open to the public with a large collection of military aircraft.

Spring and fall are the strongest windows for RV travel in the Ariton area. The best time of year to visit Ariton is March to May and October to November, when daytime highs sit in the comfortable 70s and low 80s Fahrenheit, humidity drops, and biting insects thin out. These shoulder seasons also line up with the best fishing and hiking conditions at Blue Springs State Park. Summer is hot and humid, with afternoon thunderstorms common from June through August. The air can feel uncomfortably humid during the summer months from June to September. The spring-fed pools at Blue Springs draw heavy weekend traffic in these months, so sites book up well in advance around holidays. Peak Atlantic hurricane season runs August through October, and while inland Ariton is not a coastal risk, Alabama is prone to tropical storms and hurricanes, and areas far from the Gulf are not immune since these storms often dump tremendous amounts of rain as they move inland. Winters are mild but wet. Freezes occur but rarely last more than a day or two, and most private RV parks in the area operate year-round. Blue Springs is open 7 a.m. to sundown, year round, though the swimming pools are used mainly as a scenic and wading feature outside the warm months.

Expect mostly level, pine-shaded sites with 30 and 50 amp service at private parks in the area. Full hookups (water, sewer, electric) are standard at KOA Journey properties and most commercial RV parks. Blue Springs State Park has 50 modern campsites compatible for tents, campers, and RVs, plus a few primitive tent-only sites; the modern sites have water and electric hookups, with seven also having sewer hookups, along with picnic tables and grills. Cell coverage is generally reliable on major carriers along U.S. 231 and near Ozark, but can drop to one or two bars in wooded pockets around the state park. Check-in at the state park campground is 2:00 p.m. and check-out is 11:00 a.m., and quiet hours are enforced. Firewood is usually available for purchase on site; gathering wood in the state park is not permitted.
