Campgrounds and RV parks near Ashland, AL

The main outdoor pull is Cheaha State Park and the surrounding Talladega National Forest, with hiking trails, a lake, a dog park, museums, and long ridge-top views from the state's highest point. Day-use areas include the Mountain Park and Lake Recreation Area. Alabama Gold Camp offers a distinctive family activity: creek access open to panning, sluicing, dredging, high-banking, and metal detecting, with equipment rentals available on site. Beyond gold, visitors can turn up garnets, fossils, and other finds. Lake Wedowee, reachable from Big Fish At Wedowee RV Park, adds boating and fishing to the trip. The historic downtowns of Heflin, Oxford, Ashland, Lineville, Munford, and Talladega are all within roughly a half-hour drive for meals, supply runs, and small-town stops.

East-central Alabama has a humid subtropical climate with long, hot, muggy summers and short, cool, wet winters. Spring and fall are the most comfortable windows for RV travel, with daytime highs generally in the 60s to low 80s Fahrenheit and lower humidity than midsummer. Summer brings the region's peak heat, with July averaging a high near 89 degrees Fahrenheit and frequent afternoon thunderstorms. Sites at elevation, such as those inside Cheaha State Park, tend to run a few degrees cooler than the valleys. Bookings pick up on weekends, and Cheaha campsites during peak fall foliage often sell out a year in advance. Winter stays are viable for self-contained RVs. January is the coldest month with average highs near the low 50s and lows in the mid-30s, and snow is rare. Some primitive and tent areas at Cheaha stay open year-round, though facilities like the Lower Improved Campground near Cheaha Lake close for the winter.

Cheaha State Park offers 77 full-hookup sites across the Upper and Lower Improved Campgrounds with 20, 30, and 50-amp electric, water, and sewer, plus 26 primitive tent sites along Tower Road, a 28-site CCC primitive area near the lake, a group campground, and safari-style glamping tents. Check-in is completed at the Mountain Store, which issues a post pass and vehicle pass to display in the park. Golf carts are allowed inside the campgrounds but not on public park roadways, and ATVs and other off-road vehicles are not permitted. Alabama Gold Camp provides RV hookups plus showers, laundry, restrooms, and a general store with mining equipment rentals. Cell service in the deeper woods is limited. Private parks around Ashland and Wedowee are generally small and rural, so expect basic hookups, quiet nights, and a short drive into town for groceries and fuel.
