Campgrounds near Ashville, Alabama
Ashville sits in St. Clair County in north-central Alabama, roughly between Birmingham and Gadsden along U.S. 231 and just off Interstate 59. The town is close to Neely Henry Lake on the Coosa River and to the sandstone bluffs of Chandler Mountain, which gives RV travelers a mix of lakefront and mountain camping within a short drive.
The closest full-hookup option is Greensport RV Park & Campground, located at Historic Greensport on Neely Henry Lake in Ashville, with sites offering full hook-ups, 30/50 amp electric, water, and sewer. Horse Pens 40, a historic outdoor nature park atop Chandler Mountain in Steele, sits about 1,500 feet above sea level in the foothills of the Appalachians and offers a very different, rustic experience.
Other nearby options include Bigs Wills Creek Campground, a creekside park with tubing access, and Safe Harbor RV Park. Together these give a range from waterfront resort-style sites to primitive mountain camping, all within about an hour of Ashville.
Things to do near Ashville
Neely Henry Lake is the main draw. At Greensport RV Park & Campground guests can use two outdoor pools, a petting zoo, a basketball court, hiking trails, a fenced dog park, a jump pillow, a playground, an on-site general store, and the lakefront for swimming, boating, kayaking, fishing, and marina access, which makes it a practical base for families.
For climbers and hikers, Horse Pens 40 has 200 plus high-quality sandstone boulder problems and is regarded as one of the best boulder fields in the world. Non-climbers can still hike among the formations, explore the historic rock shelters, and use the on-site cafe and country store.
Bigs Wills Creek Campground adds creek tubing in warm months, and downtown Gadsden, Noccalula Falls, and Birmingham attractions are all within an easy day trip.

North-central Alabama has a humid subtropical climate with hot, muggy summers and mild, wet winters. Rainfall is spread across every month, so RV travel is possible in every season, but comfort varies.
Spring and fall are the sweet spots. Daytime highs are pleasant, humidity is lower than in July and August, and fall, winter, and early spring are when the slopers are stickiest at Horse Pens 40, drawing climbers from around the country. Spring also brings the region's severe-weather season: tornadoes occur most frequently in Alabama during the spring and again in late fall, so travelers should monitor NWS Birmingham alerts and pick campgrounds with sturdy shelter.
Summer is the peak season for lake camping, tubing, and swimming pools, but heat indices routinely climb into the upper 90s. Winter is the quietest stretch. At Greensport, tent camping is allowed from October through May, while RV sites stay open year-round. Some rustic mountain sites reduce water service in freezing weather.
How to book
Campgrounds near Ashville are privately operated rather than run by a single state or federal reservation system, so booking is done park by park. Greensport RV Park & Campground can be booked through Spot2Nite, and it also appears on Hipcamp and Good Sam, with direct booking through the park's own website.
Horse Pens 40 works differently. The park is transitioning to pre-paid reservation camping, and for the quickest on-site check-in campers are asked to call ahead and register as early as possible; arriving without prior notice or a reservation may cause a delay. Normal check-in hours are 8am to 6pm Central Time.
For holiday weekends, bouldering competitions, and summer lake weekends, reserve four to eight weeks out. Weekday shoulder-season stays can usually be booked closer to arrival.
What to expect on arrival
Access varies sharply by campground. Greensport RV Park and Marina are only accessible by checking in with a team member at the Gate House, standard check-in is 1:00 pm and check-out is 12:00 pm, and guests arriving later than 7 pm should let the office know ahead of time. Sites are full-hookup and big-rig friendly.
Mountain sites are more primitive. Horse Pens 40 offers primitive camping, rustic cabins, a limited number of RV hookups with 30 amp electric and water, clean bathhouses, hot water showers, a large covered pavilion, and a country store on site. If you are in an RV or pulling a trailer, do not follow GPS up the steep side of the mountain; use the directions posted on the park's website.
Plan for spotty cell coverage in the hills, bring cash for smaller parks, and note that Horse Pens 40 does not allow dogs.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Ashville, AL
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Ashville, AL?
RV rental in Ashville is an affordable way to explore north-central Alabama. On RVezy, most travel trailers start around $75 to $150 per night, Class C motorhomes typically run $150 to $250 per night, and larger Class A motorhomes or fifth wheels can range $250 to $400+ per night. To find a cheap RV rental in Ashville, book midweek, travel in shoulder seasons (March or November), or choose a towable instead of a drivable. Hosts set nightly rates and mileage allowances, so compare a few listings side by side. Pro tip: weekends near Talladega Superspeedway race events fill fast, so reserving 60 to 90 days out helps lock in better rates and selection.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Ashville%2C%20AlabamaDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Ashville, Alabama?
Good news: your regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Ashville, Alabama. Alabama does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or RV endorsement for personal motorhomes or trailers used recreationally. To book on RVezy you generally need to be at least 25 years old, and your ID is verified securely through the platform during checkout. Visiting from outside the US? Bring your home country license plus an International Driving Permit (IDP). Most first-time renters in St. Clair County are pleasantly surprised at how simple the process is, so you can focus on planning your Alabama RV trip instead of paperwork.

Every RV rental in Ashville booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can hit US-231 and I-59 with confidence. Protection plans help cover damage to the RV during your trip and provide meaningful financial peace of mind. You choose your protection level during checkout, not the host, so you can pick the option that fits your comfort. Roadside help covers flat tires, lockouts, jump-starts, and towing whether you're near Neely Henry Lake or out on the interstate. Pro tip: save the RVezy support number in your phone before pickup so help is one tap away anywhere in St. Clair County.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if my plans change after I book an RV rental in Ashville?
You have flexibility built in. RVezy (not the host) sets the cancellation policy for every booking, and it includes a money-back grace period right after you book so you can lock in your Ashville RV trip with confidence. Refund eligibility after that window depends on how far out you cancel. Because the policy is handled at the platform level, you won't see different rules on different listings. If a host cancels, RVezy refunds you or provides travel credit. Pro tip: book early to get the best selection of motorhomes near Ashville, then keep an eye on the forecast as your trip approaches.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in Ashville?
Absolutely. Plenty of hosts offer a pet-friendly RV rental in Ashville, and you can filter listings on RVezy with the Pet-Friendly tag to see them instantly. Many St. Clair County campgrounds welcome dogs too, including Greensport RV Park & Campground on Neely Henry Lake, which has shaded sites perfect for cooling off a pup after a hike. Keep dogs leashed per Alabama state park rules and pack a tie-out for your campsite. Pro tip: Horse Pens 40 atop Chandler Mountain allows leashed dogs on its trails, so your four-legged co-pilot can sniff around the famous sandstone boulders right alongside you.
alapark.com/parks-pet-policyCan the RV be delivered to my campsite in Ashville?
Yes, RV delivery in Ashville is one of the easiest ways to start your trip, especially if it's your first time renting an RV. Many RVezy hosts will drive the RV directly to Greensport RV Park, a private property in town, or your campsite, then level it, hook up water and power, and walk you through every system before they leave. Look for the Delivery filter on RVezy listings and check each host's delivery radius and per-mile fee. Pro tip: ask about delivery to Logan Martin Lake or Coosa River sites about 25 to 35 miles south, so you can skip the towing learning curve and dive straight into vacation mode.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Ashville%2C%20AlabamaHow far can I drive my Ashville RV rental, and what's included in mileage?
You have plenty of room to roam. Hosts on RVezy set their own mileage policies, and many Ashville listings include 100 to 150 free miles per night, with some offering RV rental with unlimited mileage on longer bookings. Ashville sits near the crossroads of US-231 and I-59, so popular day drives like Birmingham (about 40 miles south), Gadsden (about 20 miles north), Talladega Superspeedway (about 40 miles south), Noccalula Falls (about 25 miles north), and Chattanooga (about 130 miles north) are all easy reaches. Extra miles typically run $0.30 to $0.50 each. Pro tip: map your full route before booking, then message hosts to see who offers the best mileage package for an Ashville RV trip that hits multiple destinations.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Ashville%2C%20AlabamaWhere are the best campgrounds near Ashville, AL?
You're spoiled for choice. The best campgrounds near Ashville sit right on the water or tucked into the foothills of the Appalachians. Greensport RV Park & Campground on Neely Henry Lake offers full-hookup waterfront sites and a marina just minutes from downtown Ashville. The Cove Lakeside RV Resort in nearby Gadsden has a swim lake and shaded pull-throughs. Noccalula Falls Campground in Gadsden puts you walking distance from a 90-foot waterfall. For something rugged, Horse Pens 40 on Chandler Mountain has primitive sites among world-famous bouldering rocks. Pro tip: reserve waterfront sites at Greensport 2 to 3 months ahead for summer weekends.
alapark.com/parksWhen is the best time of year for an Ashville RV trip?
Ashville shines almost year-round thanks to Alabama's mild climate. Spring (March to May) brings comfortable highs in the 65 to 80 degree range and blooming dogwoods, making it the sweet spot for RV camping in Ashville. Fall (late September to early November) is equally gorgeous with crisp 60 to 75 degree days and colorful hardwoods around Neely Henry Lake. Summers are warm and humid with highs in the upper 80s to low 90s (great for lake swimming, plan for AC), while winters stay mild with daytime highs typically in the 50s, so RV rentals run all 12 months. Pro tip: late October weekends combine fall foliage with smaller crowds at Horse Pens 40, a local insider favorite.
weather.gov/bmx/I'm a first-time renter. How do I know what I'm doing when I pick up the RV?
You won't be left guessing. Every RVezy host gives you a hands-on walkthrough at pickup, showing you how to operate the generator, slide-outs, water systems, propane, awning, and dump connections. Most orientations take 30 to 60 minutes, and hosts encourage questions, so come prepared. You can message your host through the RVezy app before, during, and after your trip, and 24/7 roadside assistance is one call away. For first time renting an RV in the Ashville area, consider a smaller Class C motorhome or travel trailer under 25 feet (the narrow lanes through Ashville's historic square are friendlier to compact rigs). Pro tip: ask your host to record a quick phone video of the walkthrough for easy reference.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/categories/360002007573-For-RentersWhat happens if I break down or have trouble during my trip?
Help is always close. Every RV rental in Ashville, Alabama booked through RVezy includes 24/7 roadside assistance, covering flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, fuel delivery, and towing across Alabama's interstates and back roads. If something comes up at your campsite at Greensport or out on Highway 11, message your host directly through the RVezy app, since they know their RV best and can often troubleshoot in minutes. RVezy's customer support team is available before, during, and after every trip too. Pro tip: snap photos of the RV at pickup and download offline Google Maps before you leave, since cell coverage thins out on Chandler Mountain and along stretches of the Coosa River.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat are the best RV road trips from Ashville?
Ashville's location near the I-59/US-231 crossroads makes it a launchpad for great drives. A classic RV road trip from Ashville heads about 130 miles north to Chattanooga, Tennessee, for Lookout Mountain and Ruby Falls. Drive about 40 miles south to Birmingham for the Civil Rights District and Vulcan Park, or roughly 95 miles southeast to Cheaha State Park, the highest point in Alabama at 2,413 feet. Talladega Superspeedway is just 40 miles away, and Atlanta is about two hours east via I-20. Travel into Canada may be allowed depending on the host and protection coverage (ask before booking), but trips to Mexico are not permitted on RVezy rentals. Pro tip: combine Ashville, Gadsden's Noccalula Falls, and Little River Canyon for a perfect 3-day Alabama loop.
nps.gov/liri/index.htmHow much will I spend on fuel for an RV trip in the Ashville area?
Fuel is one of the more predictable parts of your budget. Class C motorhomes typically get 8 to 12 miles per gallon, Class A's run 6 to 10 mpg, and a truck towing a travel trailer averages around 10 to 14 mpg. Alabama gas prices generally sit below the national average. For a 300-mile weekend loop through Ashville, Gadsden, and Talladega, plan on roughly $90 to $140 in fuel for a midsize motorhome at current prices. Pro tip: fill up in Ashville or Pell City before heading toward Chandler Mountain or Cheaha, where rural stations are sparser and prices can climb.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far ahead should I book a campground near Ashville?
Booking early pays off. For summer weekends and any date near a Talladega Superspeedway race, reserve campgrounds near Ashville 2 to 4 months in advance, especially waterfront sites at Greensport RV Park & Campground and lakefront spots at The Cove. Alabama State Parks like Cheaha and Wind Creek (about 90 minutes away) take reservations through alapark.com and open bookings well in advance, which is ideal for holiday weekends. Weeknights and shoulder-season stays are usually bookable just a few days out. Pro tip: if your dates are full at Greensport, check nearby campgrounds within 15 miles and ask about cancellation lists.
reserveamerica.com/explore/alabama-state-parks/ALWhat are driving conditions like around Ashville, and is it tricky in an RV?
Driving an RV around Ashville is mostly easy going. I-59 and US-231 are well-maintained multi-lane routes with plenty of room for big rigs, and Ashville itself sits in gently rolling terrain (elevation around 600 feet) without the steep mountain grades you'd find further north. Watch for: narrow streets around the historic St. Clair County Courthouse Square in downtown Ashville (stick to US-231 if you're in a 30+ foot rig), low-hanging branches on rural county roads, and afternoon thunderstorms in summer. Winter ice is rare but possible in January. Pro tip: avoid driving I-20 east near Birmingham during weekday rush hour (4 to 6 p.m.) and you'll cruise through stress-free.
algotraffic.com/What amenities will I find at campgrounds around Ashville?
Most campgrounds near Ashville offer the full setup you need for an easy stay. Greensport RV Park & Campground has full hookups (water, 30/50-amp electric, sewer), a dump station, bathhouses, laundry, Wi-Fi, and a marina with boat ramps right on Neely Henry Lake. The Cove Lakeside RV Resort and Noccalula Falls Campground in Gadsden offer similar full-hookup sites plus pools and playgrounds. Primitive sites at Horse Pens 40 are more rustic (vault toilets, limited hookups), so plan a dump-and-fill stop in town first. Pro tip: ask for pull-through sites if you're new to backing up a trailer.
greensportmarina.com/What's actually inside the RVs available in Ashville?
You'll find more comfort than you'd expect. Most motorhome rentals in Ashville come fully equipped with a queen or king bed, fold-out couches or dinettes that convert to sleeping space (rigs typically sleep 4 to 8), a full kitchen with fridge, freezer, stove, microwave, and sink, plus a bathroom with toilet and shower. Air conditioning, furnace heat, and a TV are standard, and many include a generator, outdoor speakers, awning, and seatbelts for every passenger. Wi-Fi hotspots are sometimes offered as an add-on. Smaller campervan rentals in Ashville are perfect for couples who want simplicity. Pro tip: filter RVezy by sleeps count and check listing photos for layout details before booking your family RV trip in Ashville.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Ashville%2C%20AlabamaWhat add-ons can I get with my Ashville RV rental, and how does pickup work?
Hosts on RVezy offer add-ons that make life easier, like linen and bedding packages ($30 to $75), kitchen kits, camp chairs and tables, generators, bike racks, kayaks (great for Neely Henry Lake), and pre-stocked propane tanks. Pickup usually happens at the host's property in or near Ashville, with a 30 to 60-minute walkthrough included. Many hosts offer delivery to Greensport RV Park, downtown Ashville lodging, or Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport (about 50 miles southwest) for a per-mile fee. Mileage allowances are set per listing, often 100 to 150 miles per night. Pro tip: bundle delivery, setup, and a linen package on your first trip; you'll arrive at camp with everything ready to enjoy.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Ashville%2C%20AlabamaHow does payment and the security deposit work when I rent an RV in Ashville?
Payment is straightforward and handled entirely on RVezy, so there's no cash exchange with your host. You pay your rental total securely online when you book, and a refundable security deposit is held separately before your trip starts (often $500 to $1,500 depending on the RV). The deposit is released after drop-off, typically within a few days, as long as the RV comes back in the condition it left. Take date-stamped photos at pickup and drop-off, follow the host's mileage and generator rules, and return the RV with the agreed fuel and propane levels. Pro tip: review your host's listing carefully for pet, smoking, and cleaning policies before booking your RV rental Alabama getaway.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksWhat's a local insider tip for making the most of an Ashville RV trip?
Here's something most visitors miss: Ashville is home to a National Register Historic District anchored by the historic St. Clair County Courthouse, one of Alabama's oldest still-active courthouses. Park your rig at Greensport RV Park, then drive into town to explore the historic square, visit the Inzer House and Looney's Tavern/Pioneer Homestead, and enjoy local Southern dining. Then head about 14 miles to Horse Pens 40 atop Chandler Mountain for world-class bouldering and sunset views over the Coosa Valley. Pro tip: time your visit for the annual Horse Pens 40 bluegrass events in spring or fall, when the mountain comes alive with music and the campground books out fast.
