Campgrounds and RV parks near Auburn, AL

Chewacla State Park anchors most outdoor activity in the immediate area. The 26-acre lake is fed by Moore's Mill Creek, and a man-made spillway forms picturesque Chewacla Falls. The lake supports fishing and non-motorized boating, and visitors are allowed to hand launch non-motorized watercraft such as canoes or kayaks. Trails range from short interpretive walks to a mountain biking network well known in the Southeast. In town, Auburn University drives the calendar. Toomer's Corner, the Jule Collins Smith Museum of Fine Art, and historic downtown Opelika are within a short drive of every campground on this list. Tuskegee National Forest and the Tuskegee Airmen National Historic Site sit a short highway hop to the west, adding hiking and history to a rest-day itinerary.

Typical of the Deep South, Auburn has a humid subtropical climate, marked by mild winters, early springs, long, hot, muggy summers, and warm autumns. Most days have 50 F plus highs, and from December to February an average total of 10 to 11 days reach 70 F plus, while it rarely stays below freezing all day, which makes winter a workable window for RV travelers who prefer cool temperatures and quiet campgrounds. Spring brings pleasant highs in the seventies and eighties, wildflowers along park trails, and elevated severe-storm risk. Severe storm activity, thunderstorms producing damaging winds and large hail, is common from the late winter through early summer, and there is a risk of tornadoes, so weather-radio monitoring is standard practice for RVers in this region. Summers are long, hot, and humid, with 57 days of 90 F plus highs. Full hookups and 50-amp service for air conditioning become essential. Fall is the busiest season locally: the park's campgrounds are heavily used by campers on home-game weekends during Auburn's football season, and Auburn is also subject to fringe effects from tropical storms and hurricanes in the summer and fall.

Chewacla offers 36 RV campsites and 9 primitive tent sites along with glamping safari tents, a group camp area and picnic pavilions. The park has full hookups (water, electric 30/50-amp, sewer), bathhouses with showers and restrooms in each loop, a small camp store, and a laundry room, and site views are generally wooded and private-feeling. University Station is a full-service RV Resort with over 700 full hook-up lots arranged in quaint villages, and the total property spans 236 acres. In the fall, live bands and meals run on Friday nights before all home Auburn University football games. It runs quieter outside football season. Cell coverage across area parks is generally good on major carriers, but Wi-Fi quality varies by site and by weekend crowd size, so travelers who depend on connectivity should have a mobile-data backup.
