The area's terrain rolls through the southern Appalachian foothills, with wooded ridges, creeks, and small lakes shaping most of the nearby camping options.
Tannehill Ironworks Historical State Park has more than 1,500 acres in three counties set aside for hiking, camping and outdoor recreation, and it is the closest full-scale campground west of Bessemer, with 195 improved campsites divided into three areas with water and electricity, plus a separate area for 100 primitive tent camping sites. To the east, Oak Mountain State Park in Pelham is Alabama's largest state park, spreading across 9,940 acres just outside Birmingham, and offers a mix of RV loops, tent sites, backcountry sites, and a dedicated Equestrian Campground.
For travelers who want a paved, urban-style base close to Birmingham amenities, Hoover RV Park and Birmingham South RV Park sit just north and northeast of Bessemer with full hookups and easy interstate access.

Peak season at Oak Mountain State Park runs from March to October, and this is when Alabama State Parks sites fill fastest, especially on weekends and holidays. Spring brings mild temperatures, wildflowers, and the wettest stretch of the year, with frequent afternoon thunderstorms and an active severe-weather season across central Alabama.
Summers are long, hot, and humid, with highs commonly in the low 90s and pop-up thunderstorms. Beach concessions and canoe, kayak, and boat rentals at Oak Mountain are only available over the summer, so shade and water access become the most valuable site features.
Fall cools quickly through October and November and generally brings the driest, most stable weather of the year, making it a strong window for RV travel. Winters are mild but damp, with average lows near freezing on the coldest nights. The park and campgrounds are open year round, so consider visiting in the winter when crowds are minimal, though temperatures can dip close to freezing.
How to book campgrounds near Bessemer
Oak Mountain State Park and other Alabama State Parks sites are reserved through the state's central portal at reserve.alapark.com or by phone. Advanced reservations may be made up to one year in advance. Holiday weekends must be reserved 3 months in advance, and weekends and major holidays during peak season require a 2- or 3-night minimum stay. A non-refundable reservation fee applies per campsite, check-in is at 2 PM, and check-out is at 11 AM.
Tannehill Ironworks Historical State Park operates differently: campsites are first-come, first-served, but a ranger is on-site 24/7, so campers pull in, find a site, and register the next morning.
Hoover RV Park and Birmingham South RV Park take standard online or phone reservations through their own operator websites and are the more predictable option for tight schedules or larger rigs.
What to expect on arrival
At Oak Mountain State Park, the campground is tucked more than five miles from the main entrance along winding park roads, and Oak Mountain Campground offers 84 RV and 66 tent sites with a mix of partial and full hookups and primitive sites, and access to 7 bathhouses near Beaver Lake. The Equestrian Campground offers 12 sites with full hookups, fire rings, picnic tables, and a dump station for horse waste. An entrance fee is charged in addition to the camping fee, and the North gate closes daily at sunset, so guests use the South gate to enter and exit after hours.
Tannehill's three campground areas include full hook-ups in Campgrounds 1 and 2, with many outer sites backing up to a scenic creek, and water and electric only in Campground 3. Sites are mostly gravel, and the park has bathhouses, dump stations, and a camp store.
Hoover RV Park is essentially a paved sports-complex lot with pull-through, full-hookup sites and easy access to shopping and dining rather than a scenic setting.
