Campgrounds and RV parks near Blountsville, AL

Cave tours are the signature draw. Guided tours at Rickwood Caverns can sell out, so reservations are highly recommended, and the massive cave contains 260-million-year-old limestone formations. The park also offers short on-site hiking trails, including the Fossil Mountain trail, and a swimming pool fed by cavern waters. At Horse Pens 40, visitors can explore a 40-acre park of sandstone boulders, forests, and a twisting rock maze, and the site hosts bluegrass festivals and one of the largest outdoor bouldering competitions in the country. Pets are not allowed on the property. Lake Guntersville, about an hour east, adds bass fishing, boating, and paddling. Downtown Cullman and Ave Maria Grotto round out easy day trips within a short drive of most area campgrounds.

Spring and fall are the strongest windows for RV travel in the Blountsville area. March through May brings comfortable daytime highs and blooming hardwoods, while September through early November delivers cooler nights and fall color across Blount and St. Clair counties. Horse Pens 40 hosts bluegrass festivals and bouldering events that draw crowds from across the country, so weekends around those events fill early. Summer is the busiest camping season and the hottest, with July highs averaging near 89°F and high humidity. At Rickwood Caverns, summer weekends are the busiest time, so plan weekday visits or reserve cave tours in advance to avoid sellouts. RV sites and tent spaces can fill quickly during spring and summer. Winter is quieter and wetter, with December typically the wettest month. Rickwood Caverns keeps campsites open year-round with restrooms and a dump station, but seasonal showers are closed November through February, and the park offers monthly rates December through February for winter campers.

Facilities range from primitive to full-service. Rickwood Caverns provides 13 landscaped water and electric campsites with 30 or 50-amp service that can accommodate trailers and motor homes up to 40 feet, plus 5 primitive tent sites, with 24-hour patrolled grounds, restrooms, seasonal showers, and a dump station. Sites are relatively close together with limited privacy, and there are no individual sewer hookups. Horse Pens 40 offers primitive camping, rustic cabins, a limited number of RV hookups with 30-amp electric and water, clean bathhouses with hot showers, a large covered pavilion, and a country store on site. Terrain is rocky and the mountain approach is steep, so follow the park's recommended route. Georgia Mountain RV Resort provides full hookups with 30/50-amp service, paved big-rig pull-throughs, a pool, laundry, and a clubhouse. Unhitched Cullman adds a bathhouse, laundry, camp store, Wi-Fi, and a fishing pond.
