Spring and fall are the strongest windows for RV travel in central Alabama. March through May brings wildflowers, dogwood bloom, and comfortable trail temperatures, though thunderstorms and severe-weather watches are common through April. Fall brings drier air, cooler nights, and hardwood color across Oak Mountain and Tannehill through late October and into November. Summer is hot and humid, with afternoon highs frequently in the upper 80s to low 90s and pop-up storms most afternoons. Shaded, wooded sites and lake access at Oak Mountain State Park help, and evening thunderstorm activity is routine rather than exceptional. Winter is mild by North American standards, with occasional freezes and rare snow. Most private parks and both state parks remain open year-round, but reservation demand at Oak Mountain climbs steeply for holiday weekends, spring break, and fall football weekends tied to Birmingham and Tuscaloosa events. Campsites at Tannehill during special events such as Trade Days and the Halloween Festival are popular and sometimes sell out on a first come basis.

Sites near Brantleyville tend to be wooded and shaded, with rolling terrain typical of the southern Appalachian foothills. Private parks along the Interstate 65 corridor offer level pads, full hookups, and easy pull-through access, while state-park sites lean more natural in feel. At Tannehill, the park offers improved campsites divided into three areas with water and electricity, supported by two bathhouses and several dump stations, and the campground can handle trailers both large and small. Campgrounds 1 and 2 offer full hook-ups, while Campground 3 has water and electric only. Cell service is generally reliable near the interstate and thinner in the wooded interior of state parks. Expect insects in warm months, biting flies near water, and occasional wildlife including deer and raccoons around dusk.
