Camping near Brighton, Alabama
Brighton sits in Jefferson County just southwest of Birmingham, putting RV travelers within a short drive of the largest concentration of campgrounds in central Alabama. The metro area combines two big state parks with private RV parks, so visitors can pick between full-hookup convenience close to city amenities or wooded state-park sites with lakes and trails.
The closest full-service option is Hoover RV Park at the Hoover Met Complex, which features 170 asphalt pull-through parking sites close to local restaurants, shopping, and entertainment. Birmingham South RV Park in Pelham offers a similar suburban setting with full hookups and family amenities.
For a more traditional outdoor stay, Oak Mountain State Park is Alabama's largest state park and features 84 improved and 60 primitive campsites plus 10 cabins, and the Equestrian - Oak Mountain State Park loop adds 12 full-hookup sites with horse stalls. West of the metro, Tannehill Ironworks Historical State Park spans more than 1,500 acres across three counties, set aside for hiking, camping and outdoor recreation, with a miniature railroad running through the pines.
Things to do around Brighton
Oak Mountain State Park anchors the outdoor activity list. The park features a pump track and BMX course, cable wakeboarding, an inflatable aquapark obstacle course, marina rentals, an 18-hole golf course, two beaches and swimming areas, six fishing lakes, an archery range, the Alabama Wildlife Center, and horseback riding facilities. Trails range from easy lakeside loops to more than 100 miles of hiking and mountain-bike routes on Double Oak Mountain, including the IMBA Epic-rated Red Trail.
At Tannehill Ironworks, visitors can explore the remnants of a 19th-century iron-making complex, ride the small park train, and browse restored pioneer cabins where craftsmen demonstrate their trades from spring through fall. Hiking trails wind through woodlands and along Roupes Creek.
Downtown Birmingham is roughly 15 minutes from Brighton and adds the Civil Rights Institute, Sloss Furnaces, Regions Field for Birmingham Barons games, and the Birmingham Zoo.

Central Alabama has a humid subtropical climate with hot summers and cool winters. Rainfall is spread fairly evenly through the year, though spring is typically the wettest season, and severe-weather season peaks from March through early May, so RV travelers should watch forecasts closely.
Peak camping demand tracks the warm months. Peak season at Oak Mountain State Park runs from March to October, beach concessions and boat rentals are only available over the summer, and the park and campgrounds are open year round for off-season stays. Holiday weekends fill fastest, holiday weekends must be reserved 3 months in advance, and weekends and major holidays during peak season require a 2- or 3-night minimum stay.
Fall brings the most comfortable conditions, with cooler days, peak foliage, and lower humidity and insects. At Tannehill, campsites are often completely filled during Halloween, since trick-or-treating has become a local tradition at the park.
How to book campgrounds
Alabama State Parks uses a single online reservation portal. Advanced reservations may be made up to one year in advance, and maximum stay for camping is 14 nights, or 31 nights from November 1 to March 31 at select parks. Oak Mountain and the Equestrian loop are both booked through reserve.alapark.com or by calling the park office.
Tannehill operates differently. With over 250 campsites offering a range of amenities from full hook-ups to primitive settings, a first-come, first-served policy lets campers secure a site upon arrival without reservations. Plan to arrive early on weekends and during Trade Days or the Halloween Festival, when the campground often fills.
Hoover RV Park takes reservations online or by phone through the Hoover Met Complex, and Birmingham South RV Park books through its own website. Cancellation windows vary, so confirm terms before paying.
What to expect on arrival
Site styles differ sharply across the top campgrounds. Hoover RV Park sits on concrete and asphalt pads in what campers describe as essentially a large parking lot, and all sites feature full hookups with 20, 30, and 50-amp service, accommodating RVs up to 45 feet with pull-through access. Expect an urban feel with sports-complex amenities rather than tree cover.
Oak Mountain feels like a traditional state park. The campground sits in a large cul-de-sac bordering Beaver Lake and offers a mix of full-hookup, partial-hookup, and primitive sites across two loops. Campground check-in time is 2 PM and check-out is 11 AM.
Tannehill is wooded and creek-lined, with three campground areas: two with full hookups and one with water and electric only, plus a primitive tent area. A creek runs through the park and many sites back onto it. Bring drinking water for backcountry trips at Oak Mountain, since most streams in the park are wet-weather streams.
