RV camping near Brookside, Alabama
Brookside is a small town in Jefferson County just northwest of Birmingham, off Interstate 22 and within easy reach of I-65 and I-59. That location puts RV travelers within a short drive of two Alabama State Parks, a large county-run RV park at the Hoover Met Complex, and several private campgrounds serving the greater Birmingham metro. The terrain is rolling Appalachian foothills with mixed hardwood forest, creeks, and limestone caves underlying the landscape.
Close-in options for RVs include Carson Village Moblie Home and RV Park for basic hookups near town, and Rickwood Caverns State Park about 20 minutes north near Warrior, which pairs a small campground with guided cave tours. For a larger park experience, Oak Mountain State Park in Pelham sits roughly 40 minutes south and offers full-hookup sites, tent loops, and a separate Equestrian - Oak Mountain State Park campground for travelers bringing horses.
Hoover RV Park, at the Hoover Met Complex south of Birmingham, is the closest large full-hookup RV park to the city and a common base for sports tournaments and metro-area sightseeing.
Things to do around Brookside
Rickwood Caverns State Park is built around a massive limestone cave with 260-million-year-old formations, and the cave maintains a constant 58-62°F temperature year round as visitors travel 175 feet underground. The park also offers an Olympic-size swimming pool fed by cave water, the Fossil Mountain Hiking Trail, gemstone mining, picnic areas, and a playground. Cave tours are guided and can sell out on busy weekends, so booking ahead is worthwhile.
Oak Mountain State Park is the region's outdoor anchor. Spread across nearly 10,000 acres, Alabama's largest state park features roughly 50 miles of trails, cable wakeboarding, an archery range, an 18-hole golf course, two swim beaches, six fishing lakes, a marina, and horseback riding facilities. Peavine Falls is a popular trail destination.
In Birmingham itself, families can add the Birmingham Zoo, McWane Science Center, the Civil Rights Institute, and Sloss Furnaces National Historic Landmark.

The Birmingham area has a humid subtropical climate with hot summers, mild winters, and rainfall spread fairly evenly through the year. Spring and fall bring the most comfortable temperatures for hiking, biking, and lake activities, and wildflowers and dogwoods appear from late March into April. Spring is typically the wettest season and coincides with central Alabama's primary severe-weather season, so a NOAA weather radio in the rig is a good idea.
Summers are hot and humid, with daytime highs regularly in the low 90s°F and frequent afternoon thunderstorms. The pool at Rickwood Caverns runs seasonally, and its underground cave tours make a cool break from the surface heat. Comfort facilities at Rickwood include restrooms, a dump station, and showers that are closed from November through February, so cold-weather campers should plan accordingly.
Winter is mild but wet. Oak Mountain's campground is open year round, and winter visits mean minimal crowds, though overnight lows can dip to near freezing. Central Alabama also sees a secondary severe-weather season in late fall.
How to book campgrounds near Brookside
State park sites at Rickwood Caverns and Oak Mountain use the Alabama State Parks reservation system at reserve.alapark.com. Advanced reservations may be made up to one year in advance for out-of-state visitors, and Alabama residents get a 13-month booking window through the Alabama Residents Advanced Reservation Window that launched in 2024. Reservations can be cancelled up to 72 hours before the day of arrival for a refund of all paid fees except the non-refundable reservation fee; cancellations made inside that window forfeit all fees.
At Oak Mountain, holiday weekends must be reserved three months in advance, and weekends and major holidays during peak season require a two- or three-night minimum stay. Peavine Falls trailhead parking and Loop B full-hookup sites tend to sell out first.
Hoover RV Park and Carson Village Moblie Home and RV Park book directly through their own operators, and Hoover fills fast during SEC baseball and Hoover Met events.

Oak Mountain State Park Campground was renovated in 2024 and now offers roughly 150 single-family sites next to Beaver Lake, including 62 full-hookup RV pads with 50-amp service, additional water-and-electric sites, and tent loops. The Equestrian campground at Oak Mountain has 12 sites, each with 50-amp service, water and sewer hookups, fire rings, picnic tables, and access to horse stalls and a dedicated dump station for horse waste.
