Campgrounds and RV parks near Carlisle-Rockledge, AL

Water activities anchor most trips. Creek activities dominate the experience at Bigs Wills Creek Campground, with tubing runs lasting 45 minutes to an hour and shuttle service returning guests to the launch point. The Cove Lakeside RV Resort and Campground offers on-site fishing and swimming, and Lake Guntersville sits roughly 15 to 20 miles away for bass fishing, boating, and paddling. Horse Pens 40 draws climbers and hikers from across the Southeast. The park sits atop Chandler Mountain in the foothills of the Appalachians at roughly 1,500 feet above sea level, with a moderate climate that allows year-round visits. Sandstone formations, forests, streams, and a twisting rock maze cover the property. Sand Mountain Park adds indoor and outdoor pools, tennis courts, ball fields, playgrounds, and concerts at its amphitheater, useful on days when weather pushes families off the water.

Gadsden, the nearest weather-reporting city, has a humid subtropical climate with four distinct seasons. Winter runs from early December through February, with a January daily average around 42 degrees Fahrenheit. Rain is abundant in December and January, and measurable snowfall is rare, with most years receiving essentially none. Winter camping is possible at most private parks, though creek-side and pool amenities close down. Spring brings the fastest turnover in bookings. Mild temperatures and wildflowers make March through May the sweet spot for bouldering at Horse Pens 40 and hiking on Sand Mountain, though severe thunderstorms are common. Tubing at Bigs Wills Creek typically opens around Memorial Day weekend and runs through summer. Summers are hot and humid, with July averaging around 80 degrees Fahrenheit and highs regularly reaching the low 90s. Autumn spans from mid-September into early December and is similar to spring in temperature, with September the driest month of the year.

Site types range widely. The Cove Lakeside RV Resort and Campground accommodates all RV sizes including big rigs, with full hookups covering water, sewer, 30-amp and 50-amp electrical service, internet, and pull-through sites. At Bigs Wills Creek Campground, sites accommodate RVs up to 65 feet with 30/50-amp electric, water, and sewer hookups, though spacing between sites remains minimal. Horse Pens 40 is more rustic. Primitive camping and rustic cabins are available along with a limited number of RV hookups offering 30-amp electric and water, plus bathhouses, hot showers, a large covered pavilion, and an on-site country store. Pets are restricted to designated camping areas and are not allowed in the rock or nature areas. Cell reception is generally reliable in valley locations but drops on top of Chandler Mountain, so download maps and reservations before arrival.
