Campgrounds near Choccolocco, Alabama
Choccolocco is an unincorporated community in Calhoun County, in the foothills of the southern Appalachians, just east of Anniston and Oxford. The area gives RV travelers quick access to Talladega National Forest, Cheaha State Park, and the Chief Ladiga Trail, with a mix of private RV parks, a large state park campground, and small trail-side sites within a short drive.
Scenic Drive RV Park and Campground and Cane Creek RV Park and Campground sit close to town and are convenient bases for full-hookup RV stays. About thirty minutes south, Cheaha State Park offers 77 full-hookup sites, 26 primitive sites, 28 rustic tent sites, a primitive group campground and safari-tent glamping on Alabama's highest ridge, while Big Fish At Wedowee RV Park draws anglers heading to Lake Wedowee.
Cyclists and rail-trail travelers often base at Chief Ladiga Trail Campground near Piedmont, which sits along the paved rail-trail corridor. Together these options cover most trip styles: mountain hiking, lake fishing, long-distance cycling, or a quiet stopover between Birmingham and Atlanta.
Things to do near Choccolocco
Cheaha State Park is the anchor attraction, home to Alabama's highest point and a network of hiking trails through Talladega National Forest, including access to the Pinhoti Trail. The park also offers a small lake for swimming and paddling and historic CCC-built structures near the summit.
The Chief Ladiga Trail runs approximately 39.5 miles through Calhoun and Cleburne Counties, connecting Anniston, Weaver, Jacksonville, and Piedmont to the Alabama-Georgia state line, where it links with Georgia's Silver Comet Trail to form a paved corridor of about 105 miles. The route is flat, family-friendly, and popular for day rides and bike-camping trips.
Closer to town, Lake Wedowee offers bass fishing and boat access, and downtown Anniston, Oxford, and Talladega provide restaurants, groceries, and race-weekend activity at Talladega Superspeedway.

Spring and fall are the strongest seasons for RV travel in this part of Alabama. Mid-March through May brings mild days, wildflowers along the Pinhoti and Chief Ladiga corridors, and the wettest month is usually March, so travelers should expect passing thunderstorms. October and November deliver cool nights, lower humidity, and fall color on the ridges around Cheaha, with October the least humid month and the month with the least rainfall.
Summer is hot and humid, with July highs near 89°F and frequent afternoon thunderstorms. Full-hookup sites at Cheaha State Park and nearby private RV parks book heavily on summer weekends, and campground reservations tighten sharply during Talladega Superspeedway race weekends, when a three-night minimum applies at Cheaha.
Winters are short and cool rather than harsh. Cheaha stays open year-round with maximum stay extended to 31 nights from November 1 to March 31 at select parks, making the shoulder months a quieter option for RV renters willing to plan around occasional cold snaps and rain.
How to book campgrounds near Choccolocco
Cheaha State Park uses the Alabama State Parks reservation system at reserve.alapark.com. Advanced reservations may be made up to one year in advance, maximum stay for camping is 14 nights (31 nights November 1 to March 31 at select parks), and a non-refundable reservation fee applies per campsite. A two-night minimum is required on all reservations, and a three-night minimum applies on Talladega race weekends and all holidays.
Private parks such as Scenic Drive RV Park and Campground, Cane Creek RV Park and Campground, and Big Fish At Wedowee RV Park are booked directly through each operator by phone or website. Chief Ladiga Trail Campground caters primarily to cyclists, so calling ahead is recommended for weekend trips. For race weekends at Talladega, reserve several months out.
What to expect on-site
Cheaha State Park has 77 full-hookup sites, 26 primitive sites, 28 rustic tent sites, a primitive group campground, and safari-tent glamping. Check-in is at the Mountain Store, which stocks basic camp supplies. Golf carts are not allowed on park roadways but can be driven inside the campgrounds, and car camping is not permitted, though hybrid roof-top tents are allowed. Cell service can be limited on the ridge.
Private parks in the Choccolocco and Oxford corridor typically offer full hookups, level pull-through sites, laundry, and Wi-Fi suited to standard rental rigs. Big Fish At Wedowee RV Park caters to anglers and lake users.
Chief Ladiga Trail Campground is oriented to cyclists using the paved rail-trail: expect primitive-style sites with picnic tables and fire rings and simple bathhouse amenities rather than full RV hookups.

alabama.travel/places-to-stay/campgrounds-rv-parksWhat license do I need to rent an RV in Choccolocco, Alabama?
Good news: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Choccolocco, Alabama. There's no special RV endorsement or Commercial Driver's License (CDL) required in the state, even for larger Class A motorhomes you'd typically take to Cheaha State Park or Logan Martin Lake. You'll need to be at least 25 years old to book on RVezy, and identity verification happens easily through the platform before your trip. Visiting from outside the US? Pair your home country license with an International Driving Permit (IDP) and you're set. Most first-time renters are surprised how quickly they're approved and ready to hit US-431 toward the Talladega National Forest.

Booking your Choccolocco RV trip is low risk because RVezy sets and manages the cancellation policy, not the individual host. The policy includes a money back grace period right after you book, so if your plans change shortly after reservation or severe Alabama weather threatens your dates, you have options. Refund outcomes depend on how far in advance you cancel, with added flexibility built in for major emergencies. Pro tip: book earlier rather than later to maximize your flexibility window, and contact RVezy support if a weather event impacts your travel plans. The full cancellation details are available in your RVezy account anytime.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in Choccolocco?
Yes, your four-legged co-pilot is welcome on plenty of trips. A pet-friendly RV rental in Choccolocco is easy to find: just use the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy and you'll see listings whose hosts gladly welcome dogs (and sometimes cats). Choccolocco is a dream for dog owners because the Choccolocco Wildlife Management Area, the Chief Ladiga Trail in nearby Jacksonville, and Cheaha State Park all allow leashed pets on most trails. Coldwater Mountain Bike Trail near Anniston is another favorite for active pups. Pro tip: message the host before booking to mention your pet's size and breed, ask about any pet fees, and you'll be set for a tail-wagging Alabama adventure.
alapark.com/parks/cheaha-state-parkCan a host deliver the RV to my campground in Choccolocco?
Yes, RV delivery in Choccolocco is one of the easiest ways to start your trip, especially if you're a first-time renter or flying into Birmingham Shuttlesworth International Airport (about 75 miles west). Many hosts in the Anniston, Oxford, and Jacksonville area will drive the RV directly to Cheaha State Park, Coleman Lake Recreation Area, or even your driveway, then handle setup and walk you through every system. To find them, just toggle the Delivery filter on RVezy and enter your destination. You'll skip the stress of driving an unfamiliar rig down winding mountain roads like Highway 281. Pro tip: ask about delivery fees up front, since they're usually calculated by mileage from the host's location.
alapark.com/parks/cheaha-state-park/cheaha-state-park-campingHow far can I travel on my Choccolocco RV rental?
You've got serious range for your Choccolocco RV trip. Hosts set their own mileage policies, with many offering generous daily allowances and some offering RV rental with unlimited mileage, perfect for exploring beyond Calhoun County. The mileage allowance and any overage rate are clearly listed on every listing page before you book. Pro tip: map out your full route (including detours to spots like DeSoto Falls or Little River Canyon) before booking and message the host if you need a custom mileage package for a longer Alabama loop.
fhwa.dot.gov/byways/byways/2316Where are the best campgrounds near Choccolocco?
You're spoiled for choice when it comes to RV camping in Choccolocco. The top picks within 45 minutes include: Cheaha State Park (about 25 miles south on Alabama's highest peak, with full hookup sites and stunning sunrise views), Coleman Lake Recreation Area in the Talladega National Forest (electric/water sites, swimming beach), Lake Chinnabee Recreation Area (rustic but gorgeous), Hidden Cove RV Park on Logan Martin Lake (full hookups, marina access), and Anniston Army Depot's Pine Glen Campground. Reserve Cheaha sites at AlaPark.com and National Forest sites at Recreation.gov. Pro tip: book Cheaha 4 to 6 months ahead for fall foliage weekends in October, when the hardwoods light up the Talladega Mountains.
recreation.gov/camping/campgrounds/234074When is the best time of year for an RV trip from Choccolocco?
Choccolocco is genuinely a year-round RV destination, but the sweet spots are mid-March through May (highs in the 65 to 80°F range, dogwoods and azaleas blooming) and mid-September through early November (60 to 75°F days, world-class fall colors on Cheaha Mountain). Summer (June to August) brings hot, humid 85 to 95°F days and pop-up thunderstorms, but lake camping at Logan Martin shines then. Winters are mild (40 to 55°F highs), making this one of the few US regions where RV camping in Choccolocco works in January with the right rig. Pro tip: target the third weekend of October for peak foliage on the Talladega Scenic Drive, one of the South's most underrated leaf-peeping routes.
weather.gov/bmx/I have never driven an RV before. Will I be okay renting in Choccolocco?
You will be totally fine, and you are in good company because first time renting an RV is one of the most common scenarios on RVezy. Every host provides a hands-on walkthrough at pickup, showing you how to operate the slide-outs, generator, water systems, propane, and dump valves before you turn the key. The roads around Choccolocco are mostly forgiving, with I-20, US-431, and Highway 9 offering wide lanes and gentle grades, making this a great area to build confidence before tackling steeper drives like the climb to Cheaha summit. Pro tip: choose a smaller Class C motorhome or travel trailer for your first trip, and ask your host if you can record the walkthrough on your phone so you can replay it at the campground.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat happens if I have a breakdown during my Choccolocco RV trip?
You are never on your own. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, so whether you have a flat tire on Highway 281 near Cheaha or a battery issue at Coleman Lake, help is just a phone call away. Roadside support can dispatch tow trucks, tire service, jump-starts, lockout help, and fuel delivery across the Choccolocco area, including more remote stretches of Talladega National Forest where cell service can be spotty. Your host is also typically just a text away for quick RV-specific questions. Pro tip: save the RVezy support number and your host's number to your phone before you leave, and download offline maps for the forest roads.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat are popular road trips from Choccolocco?
An RV road trip from Choccolocco puts some of the South's best scenery within easy reach. Top routes include: the Talladega Scenic Drive to Cheaha State Park (45 minutes, mountaintop views), Little River Canyon National Preserve near Fort Payne (90 minutes, dramatic canyon overlooks), Gulf Shores and Orange Beach (4.5 hours, white sand beaches), the Natchez Trace Parkway via Tupelo (4 hours, historic byway), and Chattanooga, Tennessee for Lookout Mountain and Ruby Falls (3 hours). Travel within Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee, and surrounding US states is generally fine on RVezy rentals. Heads up: trips to Mexico aren't covered. Pro tip: message your host before booking if you're planning to cross into another state for an extended trip, just to confirm any specifics.
nps.gov/liri/index.htmWhat should I budget for fuel on a Choccolocco RV trip?
Fuel is one of the more predictable costs of your Alabama RV adventure. Class C motorhomes average 8 to 12 miles per gallon (MPG), travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle (typically 10 to 14 MPG combined), and campervans can hit 16 to 20 MPG. Alabama consistently has some of the lowest gas prices in the US, usually 20 to 40 cents below the national average, with stations along I-20 in Oxford and Heflin offering the best rates. For a typical 300-mile weekend loop from Choccolocco to Cheaha and back, budget $80 to $130 for fuel in a Class C. Pro tip: fill up in Oxford before heading into the Talladega National Forest, since stations get sparse once you're on the scenic byways.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Choccolocco?
Booking early is the move, especially for the most popular spots. For Cheaha State Park, reserve through AlaPark.com 4 to 6 months ahead for spring and fall weekends, and 2 to 3 months ahead for weekdays. National Forest campgrounds like Coleman Lake and Pine Glen go live on Recreation.gov 6 months in advance and the prime lakefront sites disappear within hours for holiday weekends. Talladega Superspeedway race weeks (typically April and October) book up nearly a year out. Private parks like Hidden Cove are usually easier, often available within 2 to 4 weeks. Pro tip: set a calendar reminder for exactly 6 months before your desired arrival date and log into Recreation.gov at 9:00 AM Central when sites release.
recreation.gov/What are driving conditions like around Choccolocco?
Driving conditions around Choccolocco are RV-friendly overall, which is part of why this area is so beloved for first-timers. I-20 runs east-west just south of town with wide lanes and gentle grades, and US-431 and Highway 9 connect you smoothly to Anniston, Oxford, and Jacksonville. The climb up Highway 281 to Cheaha summit is steeper (grades up to 7%) and has tight curves, so take it slow in a larger rig. Summer afternoon thunderstorms can roll in fast (June through August), and occasional winter ice on bridges is possible in January. Watch for deer at dawn and dusk on rural roads. Pro tip: avoid driving Highway 281 to Cheaha after dark your first time, as the switchbacks are much easier in daylight.
algotraffic.com/What hookups and amenities can I expect at Choccolocco area campgrounds?
Campgrounds near Choccolocco offer a great mix of comfort and the outdoors. Cheaha State Park has full hookup sites with 50-amp electric, water, and sewer, plus a camp store and bathhouse. Coleman Lake in the Talladega National Forest provides electric and water with a centralized dump station on site. Hidden Cove RV Park on Logan Martin Lake offers full hookups, Wi-Fi, and laundry. Most state and national forest campgrounds have potable water fill stations and dump stations for registered campers. Pro tip: top off fresh water and dump tanks at Cheaha before heading into more remote forest sites like Lake Chinnabee, which is rustic with no hookups but unbeatable for solitude.
alapark.com/parks/cheaha-state-parkWhat is typically included inside an RVezy rental in Choccolocco?
Your RV rental in Choccolocco comes ready for adventure. Most listings include a fully equipped kitchen with fridge, stove, microwave, and basic cookware, a bathroom with toilet and shower, comfortable sleeping for 2 to 8 people depending on size, climate control with air conditioning and propane furnace for humid Alabama summers and cool mountain nights at Cheaha, and DOT approved seatbelts for travel. Many motorhome rental Choccolocco listings also feature TVs, Bluetooth stereos, outdoor awnings, and onboard generators for off-grid stays. Wi-Fi and solar packages are increasingly common. Pro tip: each listing has a detailed amenities checklist, so review it carefully and message the host if you need something specific like a coffee maker, BBQ grill, or kid-friendly setup before booking.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Choccolocco%2C%20AlabamaWhat add-ons and pickup options are available for my Choccolocco RV rental?
Hosts offer plenty of ways to customize your trip. Popular add-ons for a campervan rental Choccolocco or motorhome booking include linen and towel packages ($25 to $75), camping chairs and outdoor rugs, portable grills, generators, bike racks, kayaks, and kid/pet bundles. Some hosts in the Anniston and Oxford area offer airport pickup from Birmingham (BHM) for an additional fee, or convenient meeting points off I-20. Mileage policies vary by listing, with daily allowances commonly between 100 and 150 miles and clear overage rates published up front. Pro tip: bundle add-ons at booking rather than asking last-minute, since hosts often discount packages, and confirm pickup time windows so you have plenty of daylight to reach Cheaha or Logan Martin Lake.
transportation.gov/How do payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is simple and secure. When you book your rent an RV in Choccolocco reservation, RVezy charges your credit or debit card through the platform, so there is no cash exchanged with the host. A refundable security deposit is held separately from your booking payment, typically ranging based on the RV, and is released back to your card after the trip assuming no damage or policy violations. The deposit amount is clearly listed on every listing page before you book, so there are no surprises. Pro tip: do a thorough walkaround video with your host at pickup and again at drop-off, noting any existing dings or scratches. This quick habit is the best way to protect your deposit and start your next Alabama family RV trip with zero hassle.
