Campgrounds near Concord, Alabama
Concord sits in Jefferson County just west of Birmingham, putting RV travelers within a short drive of two of central Alabama's most popular state parks and several full-hookup commercial parks. The terrain is rolling Appalachian foothill country with hardwood forests, small creeks, and reservoirs, and Interstate access via I-20/59 and I-459 makes the area easy to reach from Atlanta, Nashville, and the Gulf Coast.
The closest option is Tannehill Ironworks Historical State Park, located in McCalla, Alabama, about 30 miles southwest of Birmingham. It has hundreds of sites across three campground areas and is run by a private nonprofit rather than the Alabama State Parks system. To the east, Oak Mountain State Park is Alabama's largest state park and anchors most reservable RV camping in the metro. Hoover RV Park and Birmingham South RV Park handle overnight and commercial-traveler stays with paved pull-throughs and full hookups.
Together these options cover almost every RV style, from primitive shaded sites near a creek to reservable full-hookup pads with 50-amp service.
Things to do near Concord
More than 50 miles of hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding trails run through Oak Mountain State Park, along with a golf course, demonstration farm, wildlife center, interpretive center, BMX track, and archery range. The park hosts the first and only cable water sports park in Alabama, where visitors can try cable skiing, and two swim beaches sit on the park's lakes.
At Tannehill Ironworks Historical State Park, families can tour the Civil War-era iron furnaces, ride a small train, and walk woodland trails along Roupes Creek. The park has a camp store, an Iron and Steel Museum, and open spaces for craft weekends and Trade Days. Downtown Birmingham, roughly 20 minutes away, adds the Birmingham Zoo, Vulcan Park, and the Civil Rights Institute for rainy-day plans.

Central Alabama has a humid subtropical climate. Summers are hot and winters are cool, with rainfall spread fairly evenly through the year, though spring is typically the wettest season. Spring and fall are the most comfortable windows for RV travel, with daytime highs in the 70s Fahrenheit and lower humidity than summer.
Summer brings frequent afternoon thunderstorms and heat indexes that can push well past 100 degrees Fahrenheit. Shaded sites near the creek, like those in Campgrounds 1 and 2 at Tannehill Ironworks Historical State Park, are worth targeting. Winter is mild by national standards, with hard freezes uncommon, and both major state park campgrounds stay open year-round.
Weekends fill fastest around the SEC Baseball Tournament at the Hoover Met, spring break, and fall football Saturdays. Sites during Tannehill events such as Trade Days and the Halloween Festival are popular and can fill up on a first-come basis, so plan mid-week arrivals during those weekends.
How to book
Alabama State Parks handles Oak Mountain State Park bookings, including the main campground and the Equestrian - Oak Mountain State Park loop. Advance reservations may be made up to one year ahead, and the maximum stay is 14 nights, extending to 31 nights from November 1 to March 31 at select parks. Reservations require a two-night minimum, and holiday weekends must be booked at least three months in advance.
Tannehill Ironworks Historical State Park operates differently. The park does not take reservations; sites are first come, first served, and camping registration is available around the clock with a ranger on site. Hoover RV Park and Birmingham South RV Park take online and phone reservations, and Hoover fills quickly during Hoover Met events such as the SEC Baseball Tournament.
What to expect on site
State-park sites at Oak Mountain are the most amenity-rich in the area. The campground has 62 full-hookup RV sites with 50-amp service, 3 RV sites with water and electric, and 67 tent campsites, plus amenities including potable water, flush toilets, hot-water showers, laundry facilities, an RV dump station, a playground, beach, fishing pier, golf course, marina, and camp store.
Tannehill Ironworks feels more rustic. The campground has three sections: Campgrounds 1 and 2 are full-hookup while Campground 3 is water and electric only, with several outer sites backing onto Roupes Creek. Hoover RV Park is essentially a large paved lot inside a sports complex with 170 pull-through sites, full hookups, and Wi-Fi, best suited to overnight or event stays rather than a scenic vacation base.
