Campgrounds and RV parks near Dora, AL

Rickwood Caverns State Park is the signature attraction close to town. Guided cave tours descend below the surface, and the cave holds a constant temperature near 58 degrees Fahrenheit year-round. Above ground, the park has a seasonal spring-fed swimming pool, short hiking trails including the Fossil Mountain Trail, a playground, and picnic areas. Lewis Smith Lake is the region's big-water destination. Anglers target striped and spotted bass in its deep, clear channels, and the campground sits directly on the lake with a boat launch and dock access at Hidden Cove RV Resort. Nearby side trips include Bankhead National Forest, Ave Maria Grotto, Clarkson Covered Bridge, and the Natural Bridge. Birmingham adds museums, the zoo, and Regions Field baseball within a short drive.

Central Alabama has a humid subtropical climate with long, hot summers and short, wet winters. Spring and fall are the most comfortable windows for RV travel. April and October in particular deliver mild days, lower humidity than midsummer, and reliable access to lake and cave attractions. Spring is also the region's wettest stretch, so travelers should plan for thunderstorms and check severe-weather forecasts, since tornadoes in Alabama peak in spring. Summer brings daytime highs frequently in the low 90s Fahrenheit with high humidity. This is peak season at Smith Lake for swimming, boating, and fishing, and campgrounds like Hidden Cove RV Resort fill early on weekends and holidays. The seasonal swimming pool at Rickwood Caverns and the cool cave interior make it a practical hot-weather stop. Winter is mild by regional standards but wet, with occasional freezes and rare snow. Showers at Rickwood Caverns are seasonal and closed November through February, and some private resorts thin out activities and rentals during the off season.

Sites in this area range from paved pull-throughs at Hoover RV Park to shaded, wooded pads at Rickwood Caverns and lakefront hookups at Smith Lake resorts. Hidden Cove offers full hookup sites with 30-amp service in older areas and 50-amp in newer sections. Rickwood Caverns provides 13 developed campsites, 9 of which are landscaped and can accommodate trailers and motor homes of any size, with restrooms, seasonal showers closed November through February, and a dump station. Cell and Wi-Fi service is a common weak point at the lake campgrounds. At Hidden Cove, WiFi and cell service are notably weak throughout the property, so travelers who need to work remotely should plan a signal booster or day trips into town. Roads to lakeside campgrounds include narrow county routes with tight turns, so larger rigs should study the approach before arrival.
